Eric Decker of Messenger reports on Smith’s contract:
* $850,000 per year
* Five years
* Automatic one year extension with 8 wins
More money than Albin was making and almost as much as he’s making at Charlotte?

More signs that he made a terrible decision.

Or a sign that Albin didn't leave for money. If he's happier in Charlotte, good for him. Ohio will be fine, too.

I bet we also matched Charlotte on the assistant pool. That would be interesting data to obtain.

Who signed for $1.3M?

Albin’s contract at UNCC is $500K base. $900K total.

Does anybody know anything about our football operating budget being slashed? It's reported here in a story about Albin's staff at Charlotte.

"Perhaps more noteworthy, several sources have told FootballScoop that Ohio is slashing the football operating budget for the Bobcats program."

He needs to get better at using sources. Don’t let the writer include them in a story where the staff to your team is announced and you’re clearly the source. Separate the news from the shade with time and proximity. Amateur hour job of burning the boat behind you. Also, good coaches are calculating and stay out of their feelings.

I don’t doubt there are budgetary restraints, but if they were really “slashing” the budget, they would’ve hired an even cheaper head coach.

All for MAC and C-USA jobs. The big time coaches know how to handle their petty grievances.

My fascination as I age is with ego and how it turns adults into oversized toddlers. I never run out of fodder.

Imagine withholding and wielding inside info to MAC football as if it were national secrets.

That would be…sad.

1. Would love Sieh back
2. Rodarte is going to be the Owen/Wiglusz, just wait. Dude showed some quick flashes this year.
Speaking of Sieh. I’m always talking crap on Twitter, much like here, and I posted a comment about Sieh coming back to OU. And last night he *liked* it. So he’s not not thinking about us.

With the hand dryers we have now, napkins are an upgrade. (Dyson dryers excluded of course)

We offered Albin over a million a year and paid a first time head coach Smith well more than Albin was previously making at OU. I think suspicions that Albin is the source are most likely correct.

In comparison, he’s going to a school that is paying him less than the last guy and giving him less money for assistants. He’s also a lot less likely to hit performance bonuses there, and is now recruiting in-state vs Bill Belichick. Best of luck.

The only way that it seems plausible that Albin would have been one of the sources is if it is true. In other words, if he was told "ok, we'll give you a raise, but we're cutting your overall budget", then he might have told someone that is why he left. Otherwise, why would he bother? He has far bigger problems to worry about now.

Speaking as someone that has covered D1 sports in the Big 10, A10, MAC, MAAC, Summit League and lower levels beneath D1 including D3 and NAIA, coaches sometimes speak anonymously as sources when they're on the way out.

It's highly likely that Albin was discontent with his situation at Ohio and wanted to throw one final jab to justify his decision. If not, someone close to him probably did so based on information he was telling them. It's pretty self-explanatory based on the details getting leaked about what led to him leaving.

How else would the site know about Ohio slashing their budget? It's not exactly like OU is relevant enough in the college football world that many people outside of Bobcats fans would care.

People connected with Ohio University aren't going out of their way to trash the program. This is pretty cut and dry. I say this once again as someone that has been connected to several D1 head coaches in football and basketball. Other plausible sources could be coaches/administrators at rival MAC schools in the know but I'd have to question their intent and intel in this type of situation.

And if a site would post information from questionable sources, I would need to figure out their motivations before publishing.

So I'm not saying it is Tim Albin 100% but more likely than not, the source is connected to him in some capacity because anyone with that level of knowledge of OU's budget intentions working at Ohio likely wouldn't be speaking to any websites about it.

I agree, I think we can smell where the stink is coming from.

Regardless, while I can see a small kernel of this being true, I sincerely doubt that was what was laid out.

What I do think may have happened was perhaps a tense and salty negotiation - based on a lot of brand new accounts pointing every finger back at OU... Team Tim went straight to we need $1M a year to stay (which is odd cause he didn't get $1M elsewhere, so put another egg into the He Overplayed His Hand Bucket), but Julie and Lori going, Ohio University does not have $1M to give... (bc we really don't)... if we give you, Tim, $1M dollars we need to find $200-300K from somewhere else. That is the simple truth of where we are as an athletic department.

And THAT is the "operating budget being slashed".

I think it's pretty clear, but paying the new guy $150K more than the last guy doesn't read GOING OUT OF BUSINESS SALE to me. Though I do suspect they're gonna have to play a shell game with some money, because we really just don't have a lot of it.
