He can go there and start. Period. he'll be seen by more people in almost any one big 10 matchup than an entire season at Ohio. if he wanted the CFL, he'd already be there.

I'm sure he could have chosen better programs than Indiana, but if he ends up as a backup, it's all for naught. If he wins just a couple games that Indiana isn't supposed to win, he's going to get the eyes he needs to improve his draft stock.

I'm honestly surprised by his decision. Got to think a cash offer was involved because it seems like he was pretty quick to commit to a program of this caliber. It looked like offers were rolling in, although not from any decent P5 schools but I figured he would hold out a little longer for a better offer.

Not sure how this is going to affect his NFL aspirations. Getting destroyed by a few of the big boys certainly isn't going to help. Got to wonder if balling out against the Northwestern's of the big 10 is much better than running it back in Athens and taking another POTY.
The more I think about it, the more I'm not surprised by his decision:

1) first and foremost, I'm sure he's receiving A LOT more $ (end of discussion right there)

2) he's probably going to start for a team that's playing in perhaps the strongest conference in college football. If he has NFL aspirations, what better way to see if that's feasible than to play against defenses that will field many NFL-level players? He's not going to see that in the MAC.

3) for once, he'll be playing in front of large crowds in the later part of the year. How much fun was the guy having playing in nearly empty MAC stadiums at the end of the year? Crowds where on the best day "maybe" approach 5,000, if that? Take a look at the photo galleries on OU's website of the last few games of the year-it's crickets. At least in the Big 10, he'll be playing in front of fans that actually attend games, crowds approaching six figures all season long. Face it, the atmosphere is much more electric at a Big 10 game than in the MAC for the most part.

Whether we like it or not, he's paid his dues. He played for OU for what, 4-5 years? He got a degree here, so what more do we want from him? Good luck to him, I hope it works out.

This is exactly right. In the Transfer Portal there's all sorts of posters insisting they know what's best for players, and insisting that the portal entrants get "bad advice."

And then here some of those same people's advice to Roarke is that he's better off at Ohio than Indiana. NFL scouts want to know how he will fare against higher caliber, faster defenses. Full stop. His brother is on an NFL roster, and almost certainly Kurtis is hearing that advice directly from people who know -- NFL coaches, scouts, and agents -- while a bunch of people here bemoan the "bad advice" players receive.

This choice makes sense, whether Indiana sucks or not. Roarke is a very fringe NFL prospect and his only hope of changing that is showing he can compete against a higher level of competition. At Ohio, he gets basically two games (Syracuse, Kentucky to prove that). At Indiana he gets UCLA, Maryland, Northwestern, Nebraska, Washington, Michigan State, Michigan, Ohio State, and Purdue.

No brainer.

Yes, he was in the program for five seasons. He's paid his dues. What more do I want? Credit for Ohio University if he does make it. If he gets drafted to the NFL, why should he be Kurtis Rourke from IU when we put in five years and they put in one?

To be clear, I wasn't criticizing his decision to leave, he absolutely paid his dues and he's the perfect example of how the transfer portal should be utilized.

I'm surprised that bigger schools weren't interested and that he was only in the portal for 9 days.

Unfortunately, I don't think he will get drafted in the NFL. Unless he finishes the year as a top 5 qb in the big 10. I think his draft stock has drastically fallen since the middle/end of the 2022 season, especially with the knee injury. Its not like IU is pumping out draft picks, they get about 1 pick a year recently.

He most likely knows this himself and absolutely should get his money while he can. Its a win/win for him at this point.

I hear ya... but we can't control that.

After last season, if he has success next season with Cignetti.......... (It will be tough to watch, but I'll watch and be happy for him)

Will be tough for him to not lean harder into that. Especially since IU is one of the worst teams in P5, pretty consistently. Imagine if they're competitive in the Big 10... OU has a chance to become the 3rd longest active bowl streak in FBS. Indiana hasn't won a bowl game in my entire life. It's only MAC football, but we're not exactly poverty. We were good before him. We'll be good after him. Indiana went into 4OT with Akron last season. If he can pull them from the dregs...

Honestly, I'm still in the mind that it will look positively on us - especially if Navarro sees success next season and we kind of just keep the train moving.

IU did have a quarterback who was a finalist for the Heisman Trophy earlier this month.

True, but take a look at the difference in stats. Not sure that's the point you were trying to make.

I sure hope the money he makes, which I don't begrudge him for taking, outweighs the shame of playing for the biggest laughingstock in Power Five football.

They needed three overtimes to beat Akron.

Indiana Bound!
Tough scene.

Last season, even this season, OU beats them 9 out of 10 times.

The competition they face is undoubtably better though.

Indiana is the only school in FBS with 0 bowl wins this century.
Good luck, Kid!

Please don't drink or indulgence with other substances prior to posting. The probability we beat IU 90 percent of the time is near nil. Yeah, they were 3-9 with 5 losses < 10 points. Again, THINK before you post.
It took Indiana four OTs to beat Akron!

Careful Jim. They didn't teach common sense or basic deductive reasoning in the Mid-70's. Thinking OU would beat a team that struggled against and needed OT to beat a team with 7 MAC wins in 5 years is such a reach that one has to be drinking or doing drugs to come to that conclusion.

Rourke may find the situation at IU interesting. IU's offense has been hit by the portal even harder than Ohio's offense. They have 25 players in the portal, including a large number of top offensive players:
Starting QB: Sorsby
Three of the top four rushers: Sorsby(QB), Howland, Lucas
Two of three starters at WR: McCulley, Camper
LT: Starter Smith and the #2 Sales
C: Starter Carpenter
RG: Starter Bedford
RT: Starter Benson

Hey, the good news is that, so far, at least, they still have their starters at LG, TE and one WR spot (if they have eligibility left)....

Just to quibble with this specific sentence:

If I'm reading this FAQ correctly (and the numbers are still in any way accurate) there is a very real possibility that Rourke is getting more in NIL as a starter at a Big10 basement dweller than he would on a max $ CFL rookie contract.

You ain't wrong there!

CFL is not like playing in Europe for basketball. Only the best make any real money, with the average salary being $60-$100k, read awhile back that most CFL players have off-season jobs.

I heard just the ending of a radio conversation yesterday about how international college athletes may not be eligible for NIL $. It was centered on Purdue big man Zach Edey and how Purdue scheduled a game this season in Canada to help accommodate him when it came to endorsement money. Did not get all of the details but it made me wonder if Rourke is able to get NIL $ under these circumstances.

One of my kids has a friend who is an engineering major who is not a citizen (nor is his family). He goes to a school that requires Co-ops (hint: UC). He was not allowed to make money with these until he was 21. The school found a way to accommodate with unpaid school co-ops until then. I would assume that Rourke would be in the same situation, but past 21.

Apparently, there is a 3 year rookie Canadian player contract that they would have to play under that keeps salaries low. Nathan Rourke gave up something like $75k to sign with the Jags. After 3 years, you will be a free agent. Kurtis Rourke will likely work for low wages for 3 years if he goes to the CFL. Overall players have low pay with a few veterans making upward of $400-$600k I believe.

According to a Wikipedia article, Chip Cox signed a three-year contract with Montreal in 2014 (his 9th year in the league) for more than $200,000 a year. At the time, he was the highest paid defensive player in the league.

You can get around the NIL thing. For example, if you are a Kentucky (or Dayton) basketball player, they can wait to pay you until you appear at a BBQ in a Bahamas Tournament. For Rourke, they will have him make some Instagram posts while he is in Canada and then pay him while he's there. The players are here on student VISAs not work VISAs. I aslo think Kurtis may be marrying a US girl which would make him a US citizen and allowed to be paid.

Don't believe it has anything to do with the NCAA, but instead the US government. Something about working visas for international college students.

Oh no it’s called federal labor and immigration laws. Has zero to do with the NCAA
