Not necessarily related to football, but this is an argument between my wife and me. We were very poor when we were in school in the late 70's and early 80's we would go to McDonald's and get hamburgers. We can't remember if they were 10 for a dollar or 10 for $2.50 on Tuesdays - i believe once a month. Anyone remember?

1974: 30 cents
1979: was 43 cents, reduced to 38 cents
1984: 50 cents

If the normal price was 43 or 38 cents, I can believe they would sell them 10 for $2.50, but 10 for $1.00 seems extremely cheap.

They were a quarter until 8:00 pm. Had a dear friend who played on our Little Ritz/Cats' Den softball team the year McDonalds sponsored us. He showed up with his two kids at 8:02. Was denied quarter burgers. Made disparaging remarks about the McDonalds owner. Never played another game on our team. I'll never forget that. 25 cent burgers on Tuesday till 8:00.

As I recall, by 1985 they were 10 for $3 and were a midweek dietary staple. The first 5 were easy to wolf down; the last 2-3 not so much.

And in my senior year the special was every week, not just once a month.

Well while we are on the subject of food deals.....

What was the price deal offered by Avalanche Pizza in the early 2000s? Are they still around?

I thought it was like 3 large pizzas for $10 on certain nights? I would probably find it gross now but I ate it because it's what the budget allowed.

We were pretty spoiled when I was a student when it came to free food as a result of the university's efforts to curtail the party school image. Baker Center usually had free pizza on weekend nights as part of their "Baker Nights" program. There was also usually some kind of party at Ping with a large spread for things like the Super Bowl, NCAA tournament watches, etc.

My most depressing memory was when DP Dough stopped giving out BOGO coupons after I think many (including myself) always "forgot" to bring the delivery guy the coupon when paying.

MY WIFE WAS RIGHT.


I may never live this down. for years i told her and everyone else it was 10 for a buck. we also walked the convo after basketball games to pick up candy wrappers - 50 wrappers got you $5 from M&M Mars if memory serves. the same memory that thought it was 10 burgers for a buck.

I graduated in 92 and quarter burger night (max 10) was still in effecthe on Tuesdays.

I know the Burrito Buggy deservedly gets a ton of love but I sure could go for a $2 12" late night French bread pizza right about now.

Wednesday was always my extra cheap eating night. BW3's for 50 cent leg night, followed by $2 aquariums at The Pub, followed by the Hungry Howie's $5 Wacky Wednesday special. Half the pizza would be a late night snack, and the other half would be lunch the next day.

Man I miss that metabolism.

$1 happy hour aquarium's at the Pub (maybe just on Tuesday's, but could have been every day), which was preceded by a workout at the old Athens Fitness center at the far north end of Court St. I hadn't learned by then that rehydrating after a workout did not include a 32 ounce draft.

Amen to that. Avalanche was my least favorite Athens pizza place for that very reason. It's the pizza that if someone shows up with it and offers me a slice, sure I'm going to eat it, because it's pizza. And it's greasy enough to pair decently with beer too. But no way am I going to spend my own money on it, because I'm not getting more than one meal out of it, and there is much better drunk pizza in town.

Tuesday night was "family night" at the McDonald's on Richland. You are correct. I remember going there and buying a huge bag of burgers and being cured of McDonald's for about six months.
