Does anyone know the status of the NCAA investigation of UNC? It was big headlines a few years ago, and now it's hard to even find much information doing an internet search. I suspect that one of our resident gurus, perhaps borna, has his finger on the pulse of this thing and can get us the most recent information. The only stories that I can find are either dated 2014, or just rehashes of old stories. It seemed a very serious infraction when the story first broke, and folks were talking loss of institutional control, death penalty, etc. Is the NCAA sweeping this all under the rug? When I was perusing the Illini board looking for information on the developing Groce story, I saw some posts implying that the NCAA needed to be investigated for its questionable handling of this scandal. Thoughts?

As far as I know nothing happened. They probably got a talking to and were told to sit in timeout for a while, but then they got their lollipop and were allowed to watch to TV after 10 minutes of fake crying.

I live in Durham and can assure the issue is not dead. UNC has replied to the NCAA and is awaiting the response. This is expected to take a few more months. UNC will then appeal whatever punishment is given so that will take a few more months. This will end one day but it is later rather than sooner.

Even a gutter dweller like Louisville made a show of "self - imposed" restrictions when the smell became too strong to ignore. Will we see the same from UNC or will they go down fighting all the way?

latest on this ....I keep following and they keep kicking it down the road

https://mobile.nytimes.com/2017/03/31/sports/ncaabasketba...

This is a good article just came out .... Not sure about the timing but it is interesting for those who have been following along since my own kid was in high school and we first heard about it through Muncie Central kids that were NC athletes. A decade...a flipping decade the NCAA has been kicking this down the road.

Interesting reading

"University officials reacted in time-honored fashion: They heaped abuse on the reporter and the paper, accusing them of vox populi scandal-mongering. Nor did the university appreciate faculty members who had the temerity to ask why a top academic institution tolerated decades of terrible education for its athletes.

A historian, Jay Smith, has written a book, “Cheated,” on this case, and recently taught a class: “Big-Time College Sports and the Rights of Athletes, 1956 to the Present.” Students loved it; his classroom was filled. Last fall, the university canceled the class for a year."

Classes on the subject taught by profs employed by the subject cancelled by the subject. Weird.

In the era of OneTermDon, you seem to find blame-the-media to be a poor response?!

I find your obsession with tying everything ( I see I should have said "EVERYTHING") up with a slam to the prexie mildly entertaining in a weird kind of way.

You seem to have passed through the ability to have a cogent conversation and have passed into that zone in the twilight where crazy old men who scare people at the diner live. I'm rooting for the aliens to leave and return the guy I met a few years back in Cleveland and Vegas. You are not alone. I have 3 or 4 friends on my FB timeline I am going through the same thing with.... I almost referred them to your thread on the other part of the board but the thought of giving the 4 of you a common place to meet scared me ....and it was something I thought I would get banned from the board if anyone ever found that I was the instigator.

When I saw this bump up, I thought it meant new information on the subject, like a ten-year ban on post-season play for all UNC teams, but alas, it's just another diversion inspired by the usual suspect. He hasn't posted for two weeks, but his ghost lives on.

I'm glad it got bumped because I missed it before. Borna w/a classic reply - some good entertaining comedy there!

It seems that UNC is utilizing the "too big to fail" defense that many banks in this country have turned to in order to defend their huge bail outs. I guess that an academic scandal is just not as sexy as prostitutes being used to recruit players and hundred dollar handshakes. In this day and age, I guess that it is also kind of hard to top what went down at Penn State. That said though, the NCAA is very difficult to figure out at times. I would also guess that they are losing a bit of their power as well in the wake of the close ties that certain programs have with television networks. Is the NCAA really more concerned about the supposed integrity of college sports or just about the bottom line?

Another sport, but the NCAA issued their penalties against Louisville yesterday.
Seemed to me, and most of the sports pundits out here, that its pretty much a "slap on the wrist".

The people on sports radio pointed out that the NCAA is a business first and there's no way they want to keep Louisville out of March Madness for any length of time.

The only thing that would has a chance to change behavior are fines and criminal charges. I assume North Carolina has an ethics law for public employees, and there's a good chance it was violated. No?

Michigan just announced, what, a $180 million athletics budget? Wanna have an impact, add $ signs to violations.

Let us face reality here. If the NCAA would whack say a 5 year post season ban and scholarship limits for same 5 years. There would be some on this board who would cheer and tout the NCAA for being tough on the issue. Then the other half would lament that the NCAA is punishing kids who had nothing to do with the crimes and is overstepping

This is probably true, and it stinks to high heaven! It's time for a revolution within the NCAA. Business as usual is no longer acceptable.

As far as the "punishment" issue.
Just let kids who weren't involved with a school's infractions transfer without having to sit out a year.

Another reason why hefty fines is the way to go.

It appears they cooked their (grade) books to improve their competitive position which resulted in lots of revenue for the school.

I am not aware of any for profit "Business" that is governed entirely by "public employees"

http://web1.ncaa.org/committees/committees_roster.jsp?Com...

Seems more like "Big Education" than any business model I have seen. Could you imagine the consequences to a Fortune 500 company that is caught cooking their books to improve their financial position? It happens and when caught typically results in jail.

I agree with Alan; too big to fail.

Do you really believe Pitino or a Tressell would ever be the ones paying the fines?

I was actually thinking fine the universities, not the coaches. And, big $.
You make Louisville pay a $5 million fine and people may suddenly start taking things more seriously.

Ain't never gonna happen though.

I am all for fining a school.

Just in football I prefer the fine to be what happened to Baylor Basketball for a couple of years: tell the schools they can only play a conference schedule. Get rid of those non-league money-making games in a place like....oh I don't know....Columbus.....and you'd see a real economic fallout from that not happening. Want to scare folks into coming clean? Tell businesses that they will suffer for helping crooks. That'll straighten em up in a hurry.

Now you are getting into constitutional issues that you just do not want to tangle with.
