Why in August? Why Why Why?! So there can be a giant mess for the duration of football season?

Yes, that's the reason. It's the same rationale for starting street repairs to coincide with the return of students in the fall. Maximum inconvenience for the maximum number of people. It's the American way! ;-)

Let me add route 33 from Columbus Road to East State Street. For those of you coming for graduation, be prepared for one lane of traffic in and out of town.

And then there is the narrowing of lanes on East State Street to accommodate new bike lanes on a street that serves 26K+ cars each day.

Yep, the mass of people for the non conference games and then the last three weekday games will cause a massive problem.

When it comes to construction projects,nothing is written in stone.

I'm just finishing up work on a large synthetic turf/sports lighting project.

When we started the design we told the client that,based on the construction time, they'd lose the fields for one football or one little league season,you choose.

They chose football,but said the fields had to ready to start practice games by March 18,2017 "or else".
Thanks to a pretty mild winter,the contractor finished up his work on March 10.

But someone forgot to tell God about the little league.
On March 14 we got 18" of snow and ice.

It took about 3 weeks before the fields were playable.
Yet,somehow,their little league survived.

As we like to say "the inconvenience is temporary,the improvement permanent".

I know this is an unpopular opinion with you but the East State Street project is a great thing and I wish they had done it when I was at Ohio. Narrower lanes are safer because wide lanes induce speeding. Also, having a dedicated lane for cyclists will be safer for those that choose to cycle on East State Street. This is a good move by the city, and I'm glad the small group who loudly opposed the idea didn't win out.

As for dedicated bike lanes, will anyone use it? They built put one in a street here, but I've never seen anyone in it. Then, due to the fact that it wasn't used, they put one in another street, but this time spent several million dollars to put a median between the bike lane and the traffic lanes, and special lights at the intersections with separate lights for the bike lanes. I have seen a couple people in that bike lane, but 95% of the time I go down that street there is no one in the bike lane. On a per-user basis, that bike lane was outrageously expensive.

This is stupid in the fact that the bike path will run parallel to the bike lanes and access all of the same stores.

Maybe there is some value of having anyone and everyone who comes into Peden for the upcoming season see the facility under construction? Sure detours, barricades, and other safety precautions/inconveniences are the less than desirable parts of improvements. However, I think that it may say to everyone that there is a commitment to improvement, that people have invested their personal resources into improving the student athlete experience, and that while maybe modest compared to P5 programs, Ohio Athletics wants to improve as much as possible.

If construction started right after the season ended and maybe some how it was finished before the next season, many may not even realize it was not there all along etc.

I personally am encouraged when I go to a city, university, other when I see a lot of cranes, construction equipment etc. moving around. It may not be pretty to look at but it shows me that they are on the move and not the other way around.

On the other hand, when parents come to the game on Parents Weekend and ask their sons and daughters what's going on with the construction and hear it's a "study hall for the football players," they might not be very happy having just paid their first semester of room and board for the year. I'm not saying it's a study hall for the football players or anyone else. That is something though that a student might very well tell their parents. This thing will need a very good PR campaign.

Akron spent themselves into oblivion on that project though. And that is a serious problem with doing an ambitious upgrade. If you look into the naming rights opportunities at Eastern Michigan, it's going to take some serious donors and businesses to fill those slots. Granted you don't need to completely fill those slots to build the stadium, but you better have a significant chunk of them filled.

Sure, Akron has great facilities, but they are bankrupt now.

Forming a composite ranking, +1 for a green, - 1 for a red, you get:

Akron +19
Miami +17
NIU +16.5
Toledo +15
WMU +12.5
BG +12
Ball St +10
CMU +7
Ohio +6
Buffalo +3
Kent -3
EMU -9

I guess it's not surprising, but this correlates pretty closely to recruiting rankings, except for Akron, which is first here, but always dead last in recruiting.

An interesting question, which is the cause, and which is the effect? Does success lead to better facilities (seems certain), or do nice facilities lead to better recruiting, and thus more success(seems likely, but see Akron).
