Deadspin doesn't do a traditional top 25 but instead asks their readers to vote on 25 teams they'd like to read a preview for. For the second straight year, readers voted our Bobcats into the "top 25," this time at 18. The write-up is actually quite good IMO. Captures the triumphs and frustrations of the Solich era very well.

You obviously aren't familiar with Deadpsin's content and/or this countdown. This is normal and complete satire. Take it with a grain of salt.

After reading it though, what's not exactly true about it? Other than a few minor details one might not get unless they ready this site regularly.

Seemed relatively accurate in a lot of things. Not the depth chart breakdown of this year's team .... but the over-arching theme of this program since Solich took over is pretty accurate

"But it’s stuck for a reason—Ohio will continue to be good, probably forever, but unless Solich has been playing the (very, very) long game, the Bobcats don’t seem to have greatness in their future."

"...there hasn’t been a more effective rebranding effort since the turn of the century than what Solich has pulled off in Athens."

"There is, of course, a downside to being a perennial seven-win program, and that is the fact that seven wins, year-in and year-out, is not exciting. It’s doing exactly what you’re supposed to do and not an inch more."

"They’ve played Tennessee tight twice now, but that really doesn’t mean anything when you’ve already proven you’re not a shit program, other than proving an incapability to take the next step."

"...the Bobcats have thrived in the regular season, typically beating their conference’s bottom-feeders, occasionally challenging the top-tier and non-conference opponents, and, as of late, always earning a spot in college football’s seemingly all-encompassing postseason."

"Solich’s teams are what they are, for better or worse; seven or eight wins against opponents only equally talented or worse is what’s expected, and that’s what you’ll get."

"For postseason regulars, Ohio doesn’t recruit particularly well—this year’s incoming class ranked 103rd in the nation, per 24/7—and yet for nine years, Solich has molded similar recruiting classes into teams that don’t out-run or over-power opponents, but rather play incredibly sound defense and hope their offense has enough in the tank to edge them out. You will be shocked to find out that this year’s team is... exactly the same!"

"They have the talent, but for whatever reason, they can’t get over the hump."

Would you characterize any of these statements as false?

Some might, I don't.

I think that this is a very accurate and fair summary of the current state/history of Ohio Football under Solich. As someone who rushed the field following a win over Buffalo, it's been a welcome change from our history from 1968 to when Grobe arrived and what I saw Knorr manage to do.

All it will take is one MAC title for most to not have a "yes, but...." comment when it comes to their satisfaction with Frank and his legacy in my opinion. His program can be frustrating at times but the overall body of work has been good, not great. A new coach could come in an inject new blood all the way to a MAC title and a hire up to a middling Big Ten team. Or a new coach could come in and tank the program back to 1992.

At this point I just assume let Frank stay on his own terms and hope for a successful future under his successor unless a steady flow of 7-8 win seasons turn into 4-5 or lower. He probably has what, 2-3 more years left in the tank?

None of the statements are directly false, but they imply that the program has been entirely flat, and that misses the primary theme I see, which is a cyclical ebb and flow. Here are the actual results by year:
2005 4-7
2006 9-5 East Champ
2007 6-6
2008 4-8
2009 9-5 East Champ
2010 8-5
2011 10-4 East Champ
2012 9-4
2013 7-6
2014 6-6
2015 8-5
2016 8-6 East Champ

Next, let's compute a 3-year moving average:
2006 6.33 (2005-7)
2007 6.33
2008 6.33
2009 7.00
2010 9.00
2011 9.00
2012 8.67
2013 7.33
2014 7.00
2015 7.33
2016 8.00 (only two years)

There was clearly a cyclical low in 2007-8, and a cyclical high in 2009-12, followed by a low in 2014-5, and we are rising again towards another cyclical high. The 2014-5 low was clearly higher than the 2007-8 low. Will the 2016-2019 high be higher than the 2009-12 high? I think it will, but we'll know for sure soon.

If the high on this cycle is not higher than the prior high, that will indicate that the program is indeed flat. If it is higher, we'll have a higher high to go with a higher low, indicating that there is a long term trend that continues to be positive.

Deadspin wrote a better preview for the Ohio Bobcats than any of the major metro newspapers in Ohio.

That's a lot of effort my friend ... and honestly I zoned out a little bit trying to read it :-)

The article implies whatever you want it to imply. You choose to have it imply the program is entirely flat. I choose to to have it imply the program is what it is ... good not great. One 10-win season in 13 years isn't exactly the sign of excellence.

We can go round-and-round on this ... as we and many others have on this board.

"...there hasn’t been a more effective rebranding effort since the turn of the century than what Solich has pulled off in Athens."

AND

"...typically beating their conference’s bottom-feeders, occasionally challenging the top-tier and non-conference opponents, and, as of late, always earning a spot in college football’s seemingly all-encompassing postseason. "

AND

"Solich’s teams are what they are, for better or worse; seven or eight wins against opponents only equally talented or worse is what’s expected, and that’s what you’ll get."

These pretty much sum it up to me.

Ohio is an above-average football program in a below-average league. Period.

That wasn't my aim. We've done that all too often in the past. I was just clarifying where my views differ from the article, not trying to convince anyone else that I'm right. To be more concise, I don't "expect 7 or 8 wins". For the next several years I expect at least 9 wins a year.

During the 2014-5 period I was looking forward to better teams in 2016-19. Now we're here. Let's do it.

Amen brother! I'd love to have 9 wins be this program's floor (and honestly with the way they schedule, I don't think that is asking too much)

I've been itching for years to see them break through and string together some really good seasons .... not 7-8 win years.
