Worst Half of football that I've seen in a long while. Coaches and Players look clueless Vs CMICH.. Is Greg Windham an option hell throw Duckworth in there.

Maxwell is a redshirt freshman. Rush is a senior NFL draft pick. I was very worried about this game as I said last week. They had a long week to correct their problems and get back to the form that they had when they beat ranked (and still ranked) Okie State. We caught these guys at the worst possible time. CMU had a three game losing streak, including losses to Kent at home and Miami on the road, coming into this game, and I feared that they would not continue to play the horrible ball they had been playing for three games. Top that off with our all-time horrible record at CMU and this just looked like a very tough game to me. It proved to be so. Go OHIO, beat Akron.

P.S. This was not a "crushing loss." It looked like it might be when OHIO was behind 17-0. Last year's team would have crumbled at that point. This team did not. We are making progress guys.

That first half offense looked like something we ran when I was a QB in high school in 1966! (Option football with a QB who doesn't run very well.) And, 16 out of 30 whatever passing just doesn't get it done. I especially liked our last play where I guess basically every receiver (at least three) ran to the corner and there were six defenders in the area. Great odds of a completion there. Funny, every game this year it seems our opponents have one trick up their sleeves. On the other hand, we are as vanilla as vanilla can be! Has anybody seen one really surprising play from us?

If CMU's qb is a pro prospect, I'm amazed. He threw to right guys. But his arm is light years from that of a pro qb. Have you seen the NFL qb's throw it? They throw a football about like a baseball--massive arms. Not Rush.

Make any excuses that you want but usually it's good for a team to show up in the first half.

We lost to a quite mediocre team. Eleven years and continuing.

Progress? You do have a sense of humor.

Never a season with less than four losses. Twelve years in a row.

Impressive.

Progress? Really? 12 years into this era and we still can't find a way to win a game like that. And you call it progress?

That's mediocrity.

And what played out at CMU is tiresome.

As someone fairly disgusted with the whole game, I strongly agree with this. Maxwell missed some throws, but he also made a lot of great plays despite predictable playcalling, a porous O-line and receivers who rarely seemed open. Maxwell played with a lot of heart, and I think he shows a lot of potential. We seem to forget that he's a freshman who has played a lot less than one season of D1 ball. I'm sick of losing games like the one against Central, but nothing I saw last night made me worry about Maxwell's future. He's still learning and is very likely to get much better.

Hey Casper, Did you miss the slip screens with the fake to the sprinting man in motion?
Tough, physical game against a player who will most likely be on an NFL roster next season. As bad as we played the first half, we had a shot to tie the game up again from inside the 20 yard line, but we were not able to come up with the big play to do so. Frosh QB, learning to play, Bobcats showed some heart to fight back into this game. Beat the Zips!

Maxwell has the tools to be an elite MAC quarterback and bring a whole lot of deep passes outside the hashes into play. But that sort of skillset can be fool's gold, too, if it isn't harnessed. Kyle Bolger keeps flashing before my eyes when I type that.

But he's played well for a redshirt freshman and he's shown flashes. I just wish he could've gone through the growing pains before this season, because if he was more game-ready, this team could've been really, really good. Not his fault though. Can't help what year you were born...

I've always felt big arms require patience and seasoning and even then you're never sure if you're going to end up with Joe Flacco or Derek Anderson. It's the dink and dunk guys you can get an immediate feel for.

+1. This is the most important question facing BA this morning.

(What happened last night is pretty obvious...we were on a little bit of a roll after Toledo and Buffalo, and the week off cooled us down. The first half was about shaking the rust off, but we were too far behind at that point to make up the gap. I'm feeling a little better about facing Kron next week after seeing the second half turnaround, but that is assuming Maxwell is able to walk this morning.)

The key to next weeks game just might be the physical condition of the Akron starting QB. If the long rest between games allows him to get close to 100%, then we will be in for a struggle. He has been trying to play in the past few weeks, but is clearly not the same player he was earlier in the year. May need to cut the tailgate party off early to watch some warm-ups!

I wanted to see a bit of Windham last night as well. But who knows if he's healthy enough to be an improvement. For the sake of this season, I am a Windham fan. Part of me likes to see Maxwell in there getting some good experience, but I can't help but think that Windham is the better pick. I know a lot of you will disagree with that, which is fine.

Our OL was really brutal last night. Maxwell had no time to do anything and he's not exactly a quick decision maker yet. I thought he consistently held onto the ball too long. I hope we can get Troy Mangen back in the mix since he's back. Maxwell could use a big TE over the middle as a safety blanket.

I'm sitting here wondering why we threw 36 passes with a Freshman QB when Dorian Brown had 91 yards on only 12 carries. I don't think the QB is the problem here.

And why did only three players carry the football last night?

It's not like we were down four or five TDs and had to throw every down to get back in it. It's 17-3. It's not the end of the world.

We don't have any other RB's to carry the ball. Brown was not at full strength and his carries were very limited for that reason, resulting in all the Maxwell runs. But injuries don't matter according to some.

It's a good point.

Injuries don't matter to good teams. They win despite.

They don't have years and years in which injuries are oft relied on as an excuse.
