Interesting email I got today from the athletic department.

https://twitter.com/OhioTicketSales/status/89285317141595...

I do like this a lot to get the hype going. Hope the fans pack it in for game one. Definitely earliest I've gotten an email to get jacked up for one.

And P.S. we are officially 30 days away from kickoff.....

Well, it sure was far from packed for Hampton. Granted, the weather was rough...but that was the worst home opener crowd I've seen for years. It was more like a midweek game. 17k??

Hope we can pick it back up for Kansas...better be 23K+ at a minimum.

Come on, bad FCS team and crappy weather. From the crowd shots on the broadcast and some photos I've seen online, it didn't look all that bad. Plus, bad crowds happen at lots of bigger football programs. Give @emptyseatspics a follow on Twitter if you aren't already.

I'm sure it was weather more than anything. Ohio has had much bigger crowds for similar opponents when the weather cooperated.

Agreed. There's a lot of attendance nazis on here who criticize other MAC schools for their attendance (or lackthereof). Yes I get its was a crappy opponent and the weather wasn't good, but for a home/season opener for a team picked to win it's division, it was a very poor turnout.

It was a small notch above a midweek game crowd (which always have bad/cold weather anyway)...so to me it was a disappointment. Can't remember the last time we had just 17K announced for a Saturday game.

Maybe my assessment of the crowd is a bit harsh. I have this pipe dream that all alumni should have the same level of enthusiasm toward the athletic programs as I do. I'm a crazy person.

Solid crowd with over 17,000 fans in attendance, that's a solid number and a good % of Peden's capacity

It was a nasty, driving rain. I understand the apprehension.

The Kansas crowd will be giant if just do what we need to on Friday.

That would be true - IF - there were actually 17,000 fans in attendance. That's what was announced, not what was actually there.

Glad to see we're in mid-season form on obsessing over attendance.

Here's an idea....

Don't play a garbage dumpster team like Hampton as your only Saturday night game.

Kick that trash off at 230pm

Save the 7pm kick for Kansas and have a huge crowd.

Never understood why Hampton was a "primetime affair"

Take away the remnants of Harvey, and substitute it with 70+ degrees and sunny, and this isn't even a conversation.

We'll never officially know....but I'm guessing it was a combination of the weather and the awful opponent.

70 degrees and a clear night would've helped ... but I also think there was such little buzz about this game ... a dip in attendance is no surprise.

Just don't go out and get beat 45-7 at Purdue and you should have a helluva crowd for Kansas

No way, OHIO has always been up front with attendance numbers.

Irma could easily visit Athens on Saturday. Oops

If the storm goes south of Florida into the gulf 200 miles then turns north, that is a very good possibility or if Jose keeps heading northwest instead of turning out to sea, that too could dump some rain. Then of course there are the $40 and $45 tickets for Parents Weekend which make the Paw Paw Festival look like a bargain. And of course if the word ever hits social media that our fans block the scoreboard view, that could lead to hundreds staying away. So many variables when it comes to predicting attendance.

I'd say a great way of bringing folks back is a free shuttle from the lots to the front gate. Run it like off-site parking at airports, pick the fans up at stations which will be located about 30 yards apart, and fans can have easy access to the games. That would surly make up for the inconvenience of kids in front of the scoreboard.

We're very likely getting remnants of Irma in Ohio mid to late week, so you could be right. And whether anyone likes it or not, that will have a big effect on numbers through the gate if it occurs on Saturday. We're not talking about light rain when it happens.

Bullies come in all ages, and are more common than ever in the days of the internet when people can hide behind their keyboards. I think it's better if we all try to be respectful of others, whether we agree with them or not.
