I'm not in dissagrement with the above analysis, but I guess I have a slightly different take.
As far as play calling is concerned, I harken back to Marty Schottenheimer who once famously noted, "Play calling is overrated." He certainly took a lot of heat for that comment, but there was a vein of truth in that statement.
I understand why a lot of teams run the spread offense, but it creates limitations in the run game. You pretty much have to have all the stars allign to run the ball with consistency in that offense. You can't dictate and control the ball on the ground like you can with a fullback and a TE. Likewise, its hard to play action pass out of the spread. So as long as they're in the spread, we're going to see what appear to be bad play calls that actually fail because of the scheme or the execution level of the players on the field.
Having said that, their are good things about the spread if you have the talent to run it properly. I've never felt OU has had the elite skill players to put the kind of pressure on defenses that the spread can create. Perhaps Rourke can elevate the play from the QB position and make White and Cope threats on the outside. But I still think the overall talent is lacking. Time will tell.
One last point. Obviously the O line and D lines struggled. Having a modified run package with a TE for the offense might have helped slow down the Purdue D. On defense. I'm not sure why we left the center uncovered after they ran it up the middle and down our throat in the first half. The DE's were spread really wide and the scheme seemed to create nautral running lanes that Purdue took advantage of.
Despite this horrible loss I'm still pulling for my Bobcats and hope they can right the ship. Heck, I had to watch the Browns go 1-15 last year. if you want to see really bad football come to the CLE.
