I received an email today from UA athletics saying they are bringing back baseball and adding women's lacrosse. Everything I had heard about money trouble over?

It's true, but I agree that it's odd given the many financial woes there.

Surprising.

Many sports can be revenue postive if you give athletics credit for the tuition and fees paid by non-scholarship athletes. I wonder if this is playing a role here.

There has been a very active and effective constituency of former baseball players who have encouraged alumni to reduce their giving to the university. Have a feeling this is to alleviate that concern. Their donations have been down big time.

Money woes are not getting better in the near-term. Their enrollment was down again this year, although freshman class was up.

I saw that the former baseball players were vocal. Very surprised they have been successful. Glad for them. Surprised that donations are covering this. Very impressive to raise the money so quickly.

Does Akron have any big name major leaguers in their alumni ranks?

I'd be surprised if they were out of financial trouble, but I have to imagine the students they do have attending provide a higher margin than the commuters they primarily served in the past. Lots more kids living on campus/in student neighborhood right off campus. Driving down Exchange Street on their campus is a vastly different experience from the Akron I recall 10 years ago. Looks more like a High Street Columbus Jr.

While I look forward to beating them in football, hoops is the game I have circled.
