Anybody have any idea how many MAC schools/D1 schools have a GM? I’m a bit uninformed on the topic, kind of shocked UNI had one.
Bill Belichick will have a GM in Chapel Hill. Andrew Luck is the GM at Stanford. I'm sure those two places aren't the only schools with a GM.

"So, I shall remind you one LAST TIME. The guy you worship abandoned his players PRIOR to the MAC Championship. He CHOSE to leave Ohio. Quit blaming others. He quit on the team."

Mid 70's- I will remind you one LAST TIME. Coach Albin did not quit on the team before the title game. He coached in the game in Detroit and was responsible for Ohio's third consecutive 10 win season and ONLY conference championship since 1968. His conference record was second to nobody in his tenure in Athens. I don't worship the man. However, I do appreciate an outstanding coach when I see one. Please feel free to get back to me in a few years after Ohio has accomplished this type of success again.

He signed his deal before the title game. If that's where he wants to be I wish him well, but it was his choice to move early. If he'd waited, he'd be the HC at Wake right now and be making twice as much if not more.

How can you deny what Mid 70s says? TA did quit on the team. He may have physically been at the game, but he’d already agreed to coach UNCC next year. If he had the gumption to hold UNCC off for a few days, he could have stayed at OHIO with virtually the same salary. It appears TA had a very poor sense of timing. Now I’ll ask a question, since you seem to know a lot about how things looked from Albin’s perspective: Was there a major personality conflict between him and Cromer? That might explain his apparent irrational behavior.

Albin had signed a contract to coach UNCC prior to the MAC Championship. To me, that is quitting. Throw in the "dog story" and to me that makes him appear as if he wanted to get out of Dodge (Athens) without much face time with the players.

Try finding another institution in America that let the 2 time conference coach of the year, the national semi finalist coach of the year and the coach that is second to none in conference wins in his four year tenure walk out the door because the athletic department didn't value him or respect the job he did.
Just a couple FACTS for you. (1) Tim Albin was an employee of Ohio University. (2) Tim Albin CHOSE to leave his employment at Ohio University for another job. He consciously decided to "walk out the door".

This concludes the factual part of this reply.

Let's revisit your argument he should have been extended early in the season. When do you say that should have occurred? Pre-season? When we lost to a 2-4 Miami team? Heck, at that point we were an awesome 4-3 team. Nothing to that point in the season warranted ANY re-negotiating of his contract.

Mid 70's- what do you have against the first coach to win a conference title in 55 plus seasons? What do you have against the two time MAC coach of the year? Are you not appreciative seeing Ohio as the top conference team record wise in conference games the last four seasons? Didn't you appreciate winning ten games back to back for the first time in Bobcat history? This football program is one of five schools to win 10 games or more the last three years. Coach Albin is responsible for those achievements. Most schools would want to keep a national semi finalist coach of the year around town. The Bobcats lost a valuable trainer to a power four school in the summer and the administration didn't replace that trainer. Ohio's administration failed to value a coach who was the most successful coach in the league the last
four seasons in the league play. He wasn't asking for a million dollars. Do you think if you had just accomplished something that had never been done at your place of employment and was not valued, would you stay around? He certainly deserved to be paid higher than the 6th/7th paid league coach if you include the UMASS coach. Many of you would be protesting on Court Street if the hoops coach had the record Albin did and wasn't getting compensated accordingly. Ohio's AD had all summer and the entire football season to get a deal done. She banked on Ohio winning 5-6 games in 2024 with all the portal losses. She lost that gamble. She failed to get a deal done when she was aware of the Rice offer of twice of what Coach Albin made at Ohio. She dropped the ball. She had plenty of time to get a deal done after the Rice offer was made and she kept putting it off. She was informed other schools were interested, but she didn't care. She refused to show any sense of urgency and it came back to bite her. Ohio's administration was well aware of the time she needed to get a contract deal to Coach Albin before the Ball St game and the title game in Detroit and they didn't do it. She was playing with fire and it burnt her. The administration including the president showed him zero respect. However, it took only a few days to get a contract deal for the new coach. The assistants are getting huge raises because of Coach Albin's buyout. I'm happy for them, but Coach Albin had been advocating to get his staff rewarded with higher pay for a few years. This AD didn't realize that the best hire she made in her short tenure in Athens was the head football coach, that Coach Solich recommended when he retired four years ago. Coach Solich knew what he was doing when he highly suggested that Coach Albin replace him. This administration wanted to rid themselves of what Coach Solich/Albin accomplished the last 20 seasons. This AD wanted "her own hire". She failed to realize her best hire was the guy she didn't value and disrespected. Enjoy these three consecutive ten win seasons. Get back to me in 2028, if Ohio accomplishes this feat again. Anyone willing to wager if the current AD will be around for half the length of Coach Smith's contract?
+1
LOL. Albin got beat 30-20 by Miami. Smith won 38-3. FACTS matter ... Albin left on his own. Did he leave prior to the MAC championship because he feared losing to them again? We will never know but he walked out on the team. I'm sure his dog is doing well in Charlotte. Better vets there that respect both the coach and his dog.
Hate to tell you but Albin was the coach in the MACC, so that win goes to Albin and not Smith. So if facts do in fact matter, be factual with your comments.
Hahaha. Grasping at straws I see. I don't believe Albin was an employee of Ohio University during the MACC. Contract Law 101.

FACT: Albin on the sidelines versus Miami this year was 20-30 LOSS.
FACT: Smith on the sidelines versus Miami this year was 38-3 WIN.

Tim Albin was a very good bridge from the Frank Era to what will hopefully be the Smith Era. Coach Albin maintained the program (his first year was an impossible task with the late retirement) and I would go so far as to say that he elevated it by allowing his coaches more freedom (offensively in particular). I did not like how it all played out but I think it is best for all parties. If Albin felt disrespected by OUr university he should have cashed his chips in. For this reason, he probably won't go down as a God like Frank and he probably won't be in the same breath as Grobe either, he will be a very solid coach who gave us a lot of years. Let's just hope Smith is not He Who Shall Not Be Named Knorr.

"Was there a major personality conflict between him and Cromer?" OCF- there was a major lack of being valued and disrespected by Ohio's AD towards Coach Albin. For some reason she didn't like the fact that Coach Solich retired because of health reasons two weeks before his 17th season. Coach Solich strongly suggested that Coach Albin replace him. Coach Solich knew that Albin would do a great job. It wasn't like Albin had never been a successful head coach before. The athletic director didn't want to make that move, but with so little time, she begrudgingly hired Coach Albin. It turned out that that was the best hire she made. Although she never treated it like her hire, because Coach Solich suggested it to her. Tell me this. Do you think Coach Albin was the 6th/7th best coach in the conference? Do you think he deserved to be treated like a middle of the pack coach that she was treating him. The football program lost an athletic trainer to a power four program during the summer several weeks before the season kicked off. That trainer was not replaced. Maybe that is small potatoes to some people, but tell that to athletes who depended on trainers to help them with injuries and rehabbing so they can get back on the field. The administration had several days after the Rice offer (which came way before Thanksgiving) and some more days after the Ball State game to finalize a deal. They failed to do so. If this were basketball coach and he had the success that Albin achieved, would you think he would deserve to be the 6th/7th highest compensated coach in the conference? Of course not!

Thanks for your perspective. The only part of this that I can personally confirm is that Frank was very high on Albin as his successor. I had a personal conversation with him about his choice of Albin and he said without hesitation that he felt confident that Albin could bring us that elusive football championship. This conversation took place about two years ago. In terms of Julie and Tim’s interactions I have no personal information, just what I could observer from the outside. It appears to me that if Tim had beaten Miami in the first meeting that the stage might have been set for an earlier renegotiation of his contract. Losing that game in the fashion we did was not a confidence builder. I do understand what you are saying about AD’s wanting “their guy” as coach and sometimes acting irrationally because of that ego issue. One has to look no further than Steve Peterson’s firing of Frank at Nebraska.

Filling out the staff, our linebackers coach, (based on X follows) will be former Michigan captain Joe Bolden. Known as a great recruiter, Bolden, 2016 Michigan alum, is a former Colerain HS all-stater and nephew of Colerain/Lakota West coaching legend Tom Bolden. His younger brother Dan was an All-MAC LB for Toledo last year.

It’s official now.

I think Bolden and Phelps are great hires. Phelps has bounced around a bit since Mike Leach died. The resume speaks for itself.

Bolden is a great, great hire. Shows how a GA’s first job,and the HC who hires him, is important. Went to Nevada and that didn’t work out, and then to Tulsa…similar situation. Probably deserved a higher career arc. Glad he’s headed our way, though. My Cincinnati friends have nothing but praise though. Maybe some Skyline for dinner tonight to celebrate.

In terms of building out the rest of the staff combined with recruiting territories the guys bring with them......couldn't be more thrilled. Will be entertaining to see how well we do locking horns for recruits in some of those battles.
