I watched the halftime stream on Saturday.

When the Alumni Band took the field they announced the names of all former Directors of the 110.

Does anyone who was there know if any former Directors were there in person ?

I remember at least three from the parade -- Richard Thrailkill, family of Ronald P. Socciarelli and Sylvester Young. As others have noted there was a massive alumni band turnout. It really added to an already outstanding experience. Mr. Thrailkill conducted a song during the post game performance. Not sure about Mr. Young -- don't recall it, though.

All living former directors since 1967 were there. Saw them all in the parade.

Alumni band on Court street at the end of the parade was an outstanding moment. They took up the entire block from Union to W. Washington. Some oldtimers pushed it to the limit to participate. That says it all. I left with the feeling that 110 members consider themselves members for life. They take it seriously and deliver with a sense of emotion and passion not seen in many other endeavors.

Just to add one thing. While the Browns may suck, the 110 is scheduled to play at the Browns-Titans game in the CLE on October 22.

Not exactly true. Dr Tom Lee (director from '71-'73) was not able to be there.

For us 110 alumni, having Gene Thrailkill and some members of the '67 Marching Men of Ohio was a spiritual moment.

Got a chance to see a you-tube video of the first halftime show under Thraikill.

Couple of things:

1.If I heard it right, the announcer called them the Marching 100.

2.In 67 their marching style pretty much duplicated Michigan (not surprising).
Its interesting to see how it evolved to where it is now.

3.I do wish they had a Drum Major.

They sounded awesome musically and the portion of the show that included alumni was electric, but... The music of Chicago is a horrible choice for "The Most Exciting Band in the Land." "Hard to Say I'm Sorry" sounds like a funeral dirge when belted out by any marching band. I'd say it was an aberration, but we've already seen the funky sounds of well-known hard rockers Simon & Garfunkel this year. What's up next week? The hard core pan flute music of Zamfir?

I often complain about complainers, so my apologies, but for God's sake: PICK MORE APPROPRIATE MUSIC

Along the lines of your last thought, there's also nothing wrong with going back to "old songs" that were exceptionally well received. For example, Party Rock Anthem was an outstanding performance. Or the Bruno Mars performance against Marshall a couple years back.

When I was at O.U. back in the mid 1970's,the band played a number of Chicago songs.

As I said in another post, they also introduced Bridge Over Troubled Water as their first true ballad.

As for "more appropriate music",unless you want nothing but greatest hits shows, right now there isn't a lot great music out there for a marching band.

I've always hoped for a halftime show featuring a whole set of tunes from the Funk Capital of the World -- Dayton. I know the 110 has done Love Rollercoaster, but there's a lot more depth to the Ohio Players catalog. The drum break in Fire would be amazing for the 110. Not to mention tunes from Lakeside, Slave, Roger/Zapp, Sun, Heatwave, Dayton and more.

I'd also embrace a set featuring tunes from the artists of Stax/Volt in Memphis or Philadelphia International Records/Gamble & Huff.

That seems like a specious argument, but I'm not a musical expert. They generally seemed adept at playing dynamic music that truly excited people until this season. If you brag about 50 years of "funkin" and being the most exciting anything, you're delivering milk after promising cream when you play effectively somber music. Keep playing Chicago and the band may wonder "Will You Still Love Me?" as their fans "Look Away."

I wouldn't call myself a musical expert, but I do follow Drum Corps and Marching Band pretty closely.

Actually, people have been commenting for a couple of years that the 110 wasn't as exciting as in the past.

I the record, cassette or cd for every 110 season since 1971.
Some years are much better then others.

You also have the problem of "the next big thing".
Viral sensations like "Party Rock Anthem" set a high hurdle to get over.

I don't know about college bands getting rights to certain music, but it is a big issue in Drum Corps.
Some artists flat out refuse to let a corps use their music.
I don't know if its changed, but at one time Bruce wouldn't allow bands, even in his home town to use his music.

Others have to approve the band's arrangements in advance.

I've also been told by corps arrangers that its tough to come up with "workable" arrangements for a lot of songs to fit in with marching music's instruments.
Its not just arranging music, you also have to be able to design drill that fits a song.

Some of 110's best received recent shows were Queen and Led Zep.
Not exactly "new" music.
They also did a pretty good country show.

No question that,so far,the 110 isn't having their most exciting season.
But,they're still head and shoulders above most college bands.

Just my $0.02

They should play "Fat Bottomed Girls" in every show, but maybe that's not PC anymore. (Don't know if they still play it or not.)

110 is still exciting

But, the choice of 25 or 6 to 4 was not a top choice. The sound is lost when they are moving and it only has brief moments of power. It had also been played in the last 5-7 years.

They could have done a show of one top song from every decade and the Chicago song would have not made the cut.

My recent favorite other than the gold hits of Party Rock, Gangam and Fox was the tribute to the tubas--Seven Nation Army! When the band back peddled and then turned it was a true wall of sound that was awesome.

They do play a "shortened" (no dance break) version every now and then.

Not agreeing or disagreeing. However, I did come away from that performance knowing something I didn't know previously. Thanks to the announcer's introduction to "25 or 6 to 4", I now know the origin of the title.

So, I've got that going for me.

I am definitely not a Chicago fan either. It was one of my least favorites when I played it as a 110 member. I suppose it doesn't help that I had an ex-OU girlfriend make me take her to a Chicago concert in Columbus circa 1990. Probably the lamest concert I've seen. I guess since most 110 alumni had performed at least Old Days and 25 or 6 to 4 during their time in the band and because Chicago was also celebrating their 50th anniversary there was a connection. However, music preferences aside, it was a fantastic weekend. It was a hall of fame weekend for 110 members and alumni. The 110 alumni board and current staff pulled off one of best homecoming weekends ever.

The only thing I wish the university would fix is the parade. If it weren't for the 110, alumni band, MMO and maybe a couple other organizations, it'd be unwatchable. McDictator is gone. Maybe the new president can be more open to discussions. Sadly, the university never even asked the 110 for their input on route changes or offered them a seat at the parade committee table. The two feature organizations in the parade were given no input on the parade route. Mcdavis just stacked the parade committee with people who weren't even participants in the parade and told them how it was going to be. End result is an overreaction of banned floats and snaking 250+ person marching bands around town away from court street just to appease his vendetta with a couple bar owners. Hopefully, Nellis can be more rational.

I have not attended the parade in a number of years because to me it has become unwatchable. I'd like to see high school bands invited back and some floats that look like they took more fifteen minutes to put together.

I don't think it should be assumed that high school bands were either "removed" or "not invited." More likely, their lack of participation can be attributed to their choice to attend band competitions on Saturdays and/or budgetary challenges that force them to limit how often and how far they can travel. They attend competitions in a quest for ratings, so that they can attend state competition.

Additionally, don't forget that for a number of years now we have involved high school bands on "Band Day" during a football game. The chance to perform on the field, alongside the 110, in front of a larger crowd, is likely more appealing to them than a parade. Plus, the parents of the high school band members then buy football tickets...

Perhaps. But it seems odd that budgetary restraints would be impacting all of the high school bands. Yes, some may have that issue, but surely not all.

As a former 110er, I preferred parades to on-field performances. Maybe I'm alone on that, but I would think there are high school band directors who would want to participate in the HC parade.

I am a former 110er as well. If you look at the two opportunities to come to Athens (HC and Band Day), most are going to pick Band Day (and not come to Athens twice). The opportunity to jam with the 110 is far more attractive (read: FUN) to current HS band members than a long parade with an ill-conceived route and scattered fans.

I think we can safely agree that the current parade route sucks.

I think it also bears considering the early morning start after a night when high school football games are played. Certainly several of the "local" bands were likely away games and many may not have returned home until close to midnight.

Furthermore, one look at many of the local band programs will find that they are small in number. When compared to the size of The 110 and the Alumni Band a number of our local high school programs are marching with numbers hovering close to 30 as opposed to a hundred. Yes, there are a few exceptions and I understand that, but when looking at those programs that are close to the city of Athens and where being there by 9 AM for a 10:00 step-off is a possibility I can easily understand why many opt for the Band Day activities on Oct. 21 as opposed to marching in the OU Homecoming Parade.

Looking at videos of the bands that come for Band Day,it would appear based on cadences, song selection and marching style, that their band directors have some connection to the 110.
That could also influence the desire to come for band day.
