Hmmm...Toledo board is silent about a game with the East leader in two days...except for one user who posts links to Frank's press conference and other official releases, and gets no replies...

Very curious indeed.

It's a new week. They are starting to post now. There is a new post pointing out an error on Ohiobobcats.com that says that Toledo is second to Ohio, being bowl eligible four years in a row. Toledo has actually been bowl eligible 8 years in a row, since 2009 was the last year when they were not eligible. It's true that Toledo, while eligible, didn't go to a bowl in 2013, but it's also true that Ohio, while eligible, didn't go to one in 2014.

Spread is down to 4.5 now.

Last year, we played Toledo when they were 6-1 and we were 5-3. We had a terrible record in the Glass Bowl if I'm not mistaken. At the time, Toledo had outscored their opponents 289-157. Their only loss was a 55-53 shootout against BYU. In case you forgot, we won that game 31-26. In case you forgot, we held Kareem Hunt, currently leading the NFL in rushing, to 50 yards on 13 carries. Logan Woodside, on the other hand, did throw for over 400 yards against us.

This year, we face off against Toledo with them sitting at 8-1 while we are at 7-2. Our defense is not as stout as it was last year, but I feel like we are a better team than the squad on the field last year. We have a healthy Oullette, an upgrade at QB, an O-Line that seems to be pretty dominant, and a kicking game with a year more experience. Our defense is much more suspect than last year, but I think we really should be quite competitive on Wednesday, if not the favorites. They have not been overly dominant against any team save Ball State (maybe Akron as well).

Why are people ok with losing this game "as long as we beat Akron and Buffalo"? Nothing is guaranteed! Win the next game. Toledo has freaking owned us! Beat them for the second year in a row and we'll have ourselves a nice edge going into the title game. Last year was clearly WMU's year and we still almost beat them with no running game to speak of and very spotty quarterback play. I'm not interested in putting Toledo on that pedestal and crowning them for anything yet this year. And losing at home this week isn't going to make me feel any better about our chances if we get to Detroit. I want to be the only team that beats them this year in the MAC, so we might as well do it twice. We should never have lost to CMU so I think this is our chance to steal one back, even though only a mild upset. We've got a shot at 10 wins in the regular season. Go get it.

Does ANYONE really want to go to Buffalo on the last day of the year with the title not already clinched? That place is a house of horrors and they would like nothing more than to ruin our year on the last day. Too much crazy !@#$ happens in those last games.

I hear you, I just don't want to have to show Toledo everything we have to win a game that isn't the MACC. The championship is within reach and I want us to have the best shot at winning it. But you certainly aren't wrong in your thinking. I would love to win out.

There have now been 20 MAC Championship games, the first being in 1997. Since then, only four times have the two teams that squared off in the championship game met during the regular season as well. It hasn't happened at all since 2005, an oddity where the last eleven years haven't had a rematch of a regular season matchup. Of the previous four, three times the team that won in the regular season won also in the championship.

In 2005, Akron beat Northern Illinois twice.
In 2004, Toledo lost to Miami in the regular season 23-16, but got revenge in the MACC 35-27.
In 2003, Miami beat BGSU twice, and both times BGSU was ranked. The first time Miami won, BG was ranked #15. The second time, #20.
In 1999, Marshall had its way with Western Michigan both in the regular season and again in the championship.

This year, Toledo is almost certainly going to face a repeat of a regular season matchup. It'll be OHIO vs. Toledo in the MACC or Akron vs. Toledo.

This is where I am at! I don't get the 'don't show them too much' theories. We aren't good enough to hold back anything to save for later. Win the next game, always.

I don't envy the coaching staff this weekend. What a tall order when it comes to preparing for Toledo. I just don't see how we can beat this team, but I guess that is why the coaches get paid the "big bucks," so to speak. I guess that Ohio needs to hope that Toledo comes out flat, and that we are able to dial up some pressure on the quarterback and force some welcome turnovers. At the same time, our offense needs to control the clock, the front line, and minimize mistakes. This is either going to be a nail biter that will shorten the collective lives of Ohio fans or a real shot in the gut type of route that pushes Toledo up the National Charts, and leaves Ohio fans wondering what the point of making it to the Championship game really is right now.

Meanwhile, the point spread continues to fall. I'm seing 3.5-4 now.

The point spread on the Miami-Akron game continues to rise, and it's up to 6.5-7 now. That seems odd to me because, while I think Miami is the better team, I'm unconvinced that Miami knows how to win, while Akron does. Miami is 1-4 in the last five games (including losing to even Kent), while Akron is 4-1, the only loss being to Toledo. I suppose the rising point spread indicates that Ragland will play.

Today's Hamilton Journal-News article (link on the home page) suggests that Ragland will play tonight.

Another concern is Buffalo weather. Remember, Kent was snowed out up there a couple of years ago when Buffalo got four feet of snow around Thanksgiving. I'd rather not chance having Akron going to the MACCG because they're 6-2 and we're 5-2 because our last game was snowed out.

Win the next two and the Buffalo game is irrelevant.

Yes, Ohio will need it's Virgil in order to make it through the Inferno, Purgatory, and then Paradiso. God speed to Dante, and God Speed to Ohio.

Pardon my ignorance but should Miami beat Akron tomorrow - do we lock up the East? Or do we still need to win one on the road the next two weeks...

CTH

With a Miami defeat of Akron, combined with an Ohio win over Toledo, Ohio could conceivably win the East without beating Akron if Ohio also beats Buffalo and Akron loses to Kent, which is still not likely.

Seriously, the main thing an Ohio win over Toledo, or a Miami win over Akron would accomplish is that then, if Ohio beats Akron, they clinch the East. Right now Ohio needs to defeat Akron, plus one of the following:
Ohio beats Toledo, or, Ohio beats Buffalo, or Miami beats Akron, or Kent beats Akron.

Expect they will pick on Brad Ellis and try to get a size mismatch. With help from Hagen and others I don't think they can beat us that way.
We just need to be sure we don't play with lots of cushion early and get ourselves too far in a hole.
Looks like high 30's for kickoff.
Senior night seems to get short shrift in this mid week and late season foul weather.
I think we run and throw effectively against UT.

The betting public is normally wrong...so seeing Ohio drop from +6 to +3' has me worried ...

Same goes if you're an Akron fan ... money on Zips raising that line to +9'

Actually, the money on Miami (or lack of money on the zips) drove it all the way from -4 to -11. Miami dominated first half yards, 235 to 142, but committed two turnovers, so they only go into the half leading 10-7. If they cut the turnovers in the second half, they very well may cover, though I don't particularly care. That games means little, other than that if Akron loses, then if Ohio beats Akron, the Ohio-Buffalo game no longer matters.

This may be as big a game we have had in a while. Top two MAC teams with a chance to make a statement that Ohio is the MAC's favorite. We have been underdog in every MAC title game we have played in. This year we might be the favorite. Bobcats need to prove it. We got the top offensive team in school history. This team has the offensive firepower to hang with MAC West teams that past Ohio teams lacked in MAC title games.

I, admittedly, have the brain and sense of humor of a 12-year old. When I see that SoundCloud link Ted posts with Russ' picture, I laugh because under the photo is a little tab that says Cookie policy. In my mind, it's saying his name is Cookie Policy, the long-lost son of Carmen Policy.
