I'll guess we beat Buffalo (and Akron beats Kent by a point, because... that's our luck), and then we suffer our annual bowl game defeat.

But no one is firing Solich after a 9-3 season. We're not Alabama.

Yeah, I want us to win the conference at least once in my lifetime. But 9-3 is not a record for which one loses his job -- not in THIS conference. And not after the likes of Cleve Bryant, Tom Lichtenberg and Brian Knorr have led this program.
Maybe not here....but Frank was fired after a 9-3 Husker season.

Ohio is looking realistically at 9 or 10 wins for 2017 which continues the uptrend from 2014 the 6-6 season. Staff is safe for at least one more year IMO.
Besides Toledo, who have they really beaten this year? A bunch of s*** on the schedule.
No one. The only difference between this and the usual 8-6 season was the Toledo game. Usually they’d get blown out there. That and this year won’t have enough games played to go 8-6 because they blew that tonight, it would be 8-5 if they mail next week in (which usually happens) and lose a bowl game.

The team is averaging 40ppg this season. If they go 10-3 it will be the best winning percentage in the Solich era. This year I don't think they will mail it in and they are due for a bowl win after narrow losses the last 2 years.

I've done the scheduling math on previous threads.....it ain't hard to figure out why we are what we are.....

We're not Nebraska either. And I think Nebraska has learned its lesson about firing coaches with winning records.

They are due a MACC after nearly 50 years too, right?

Playing Buffalo on 10 days rest and then an overmatched CUSA team in the Bahamas I feel relatively optimistic on 10 wins.

I am very deflated, disappointed, disgusted by this loss at Akron. Seems like Ohio Football will never get over the hump.
That said, I have been around long enough to have some perspective. Others on this board have been around much longer than me.
But I vividly remember the Lichtenberg years. The Bobcats won more games in a month this season than I can remember them winning in my four years at OU. Others may remember almost two decades of horrible performances before that.
For the longest time, it seemed an impossible dream to EVER get a major-conference team of any kind to even PLAY at Peden Stadium - let alone beat them like the Bobcats did this season. I was there when the Bobcats lost at home to Youngstown St. in the early 90's. And I also was there when the Bobcats beat Pitt at home in OT, and I was there when they won at Penn St.
Ohio Football under Frank Solich has been more satisfying then anything I could imagine it would ever become 25 years ago. Many of us remember how bad it was, and how bad it could become again someday.
I can't fathom why the Bobcats lost tonight's game. But I remember the decades-long period of time when that game wouldn't have mattered at all to anyone. A time when the chance to be in position to win the MAC was a crazy and silly thought.
Now, does my perspective make me apologetic? Or does it make me appreciative? I'll leave that for you to decide. But I know how bad things used to be, and could maybe be again when Coach Solich is no longer there - whether on his terms or someone else's.

It makes you apologetic to think, "Gosh, darn, at least Lichty ain't leading us to another 0-fer." That was more than a generation ago. Anybody that played on that team is north of 40.

Surely you don't rock to yourself in a corner thinking that if Solich leaves then a return Bryant/Lichtenberg is the only possible result.

To call Kansas a major conference team is laughable. They haven't won a road game this decade. The only thing major about Kansas is their basketball team, and that doesn't mean a damn thing on the gridiron.

Expect more.

Banking on the fact that we used to suck and don’t anymore, therefore be grateful just doesn’t work anymore. We’ve not sucked now for a decade, and have turned into an 8-6 (give or take a game either way) machine over the past 5 years, blowing any game of importance consistently. This is as good as it gets. Just because this year has resulted in “(x) up the middle” actually working some and led to more points, it’s still generating the same end result as every other year.

Just finished typing my post in the game thread using the word apologist. Not sure how you can pin this in a big way on the staff when we were up big early. Three turns lead to 21 points for ‘kron and that is a tough hole for any team to dig out of. Sure you can argue play calling, but we lose Dorian for most of the game and we lose a lot of options in the run game. No doubt this is a crusher, tough swallow for sure.
I see what you're saying, but it was the staff's decision to kick a FG on 4th and 1 from the goal line.

I'll definitely grant you that second guess, totally legit when you fast forward to the end of the game. But there is a common thread in our three losses: TO margin v Purdue was -2, CMU was -3 with a kick block returned for a TD, and Akron was -3. Figure in the short fields many/most of those TO's turned into, and you can't win games in that fashion. I'm not blaming the players v coaches, but statistics are what statistics are, and that is the primary/common thread in our three losses. And not to suggest we would have beaten Purdue, but the two fumbles on concurrent drives that let to scores really changed momentum in that game. But if you make us even in TO's v CMU/Akron, we likely win both games relatively easily. Now you can likely also argue that RB's and kick returners should be coached better to not fumble, and QB's should be coached better to not throw INT's...

You say expect more and that's an interesting point. My retort would be, why?

Not to rehash previous posts I've made, but Ohio doesn't have and more importantly doesn't want to have the infrastructure to expect more. We play in a crappy little stadium that's older than Moses, NONE of the recent improvements to the program have been funded by the school as they came from private donations (now, maintenance of those buildings is another story), a brouhaha is always raised by the faculty and others in Athens and even posters on this board when Ohio builds anything related to football (heck, even a good portion of the posters ON THIS BOARD think the Sook Academic Center is too expensive and a waste of $, as minor as the building is) or spends any amount of money related to football.

I love OHIO football and all of you do too but we have to realize, for the most part no one else does nor does anyone care. I want championships for sure (geez, I'd take just one at this point) but to say I should "expect more"? With the limited amount of resources Ohio really spends on football, I don't know.

the excuses are no longer valid. We spend just as much as any other MAC program. It is time to win one and stop lining up excuses and bowl eligibility post cards. Go Cats

My question is not "why" but "what"? What does "more" mean? A conference championship?

The staff is safe due to the fact that Ohio does not have the money to play with the big boys, Southeastern Ohio has no media market, and there is virtually no local recruiting base of any worth. (Though it should be noted in all fairness that the one gem that came out of the area in recent memory was not recruited, even though he was a son of one of the coaches.)

It is amazing that Ohio has seen the success it has. There was talk in the seventies of scrapping football altogether when enrollment dramatically dipped after the end of the Vietnam war. That would probably have done wonders for our basketball program, and justified why so many students wear Ohio State gear on campus anyway. After the retirement of Coach Hess, the Bobcats were a bottom dweller up until the arrival of Jim Grobe.

Solich has been able to convince those in charge of Ohio to funnel huge sums of money to the football program, despite the voiced anger of the Academic elite at Ohio. Solich and Burrows have also been able to bring in some terrific Defensive Talent over the years, who have made it into the NFL. Still, the team lacks depth as was evidenced last night at Akron. Ohio plays physical football, which means injuries in November and physically worn players. I don't think that the team was emotionally spent after Toledo, I think that they were physically exhausted.

I can't imagine who Ohio is going to go after next as a Coach. I believe that Solich and his staff have done a lot with very little. Unless Ohio is thinking about laying out a million dollars a year for a head coach, I just can't imagine who would be interested in coming to Southeastern Ohio to coach. Somebody joked about Mike Riley on this site; perhaps, that is not far from the truth.

But it’s completely independent of the main issue here, which is that they fold like a lawn chair every time something is on the line, year in and year out. The “poor little Ohio” excuse may explain why there’s no B1G move in the future, but it has nothing do do with being the MAC resident choke artists, with generally the same end result every year.

Bill Hess died, he did not retire. It would take about $300K more for Ohio to pay its HC $1,000,000 and not quite sure about the no resources thing as there has been money given to do the IPF and Sook without Ohio going into debt for it.

[QUOTE=Maddog13] The staff is safe due to the fact that Ohio does not have the money to play with the big boys, Southeastern Ohio has no media market, and there is virtually no local recruiting base of any worth.

This is the case with most MAC schools, yet coaches still get fired and other MAC teams win the MAC and beat ranked teams. This is just us continuing to beat the the mediocre drum and us expecting to come up short. A coach can come to Athens and win, FS did, he just has not won the big games. We have brought in players that went on to play in the NFL, so have other MAC schools. We have to execute in big games and win down the stretch. We could be undefeated this year, we don’t lose because of our location or because of our record in the 70’s, we lose because of our execution and our bowl eligible mentality. We celebrated our season two weeks ago, fist bump. You know what Basham and Brown constantly say, they say I miss Athens. I know players from the 90’s team that still go back to Ohio yearly.

I've been gathering my thoughts on the game last night and even though I may still be collecting my thoughts, I believe I've come to a realization. Granted this may not be an apples to apples comparison, but I believe there is some merit. I feel as if Frank Solich has become the Mark Martin of the MAC. Martin, being a NASCAR driver won many races in his career. At one point he was the winningest driver in NASCAR's lower division (Busch Series). However he never won a Championship. Even though he is one of the 50 greatest drivers, and a Hall of Famer, he does not have a coveted championship. As we all know the Bobcats and Solich have not achieved that piece of hardware yet. Will they? I hope so, but like Martin, Solich's time in his career is waining, and someone only gets so many chances.

Am I defending him? Not at all, but I do appreciate where he has brought us. However when there is consistency such as 0-12, most likely 0-13, a few head scratcher losses, and the gut punches such as NIU and last night, I can't help but think of the saying, "you knew that dog bit when you pet it."

When we all envisioned what could of happened here when Solich first came on board, I doubt this was it. My only question is has this staff become complacent? I could be way off base, but the Ohio athletic department doesn't strike me as the "hold the coaches feet to the fire" type of athletic department. Get wins, go to a bowl, get national exposure, and represent the university in a positive manor, they are happy. I've also gotten the impression that Solich and Co, aren't coaching as if their jobs depend on it. Albin and Burrows know that Solich won't give them walking papers, and at 73 Solich is more likely to retire than be fired. The stability is nice, continuity is nice, the wins over less than stellar opponents are... nice? But after a while it gets stale. As John Tortorella of the Blue Jackets put it. "Safe is death."

For quoting Jim Rome, I propose a lifetime ban from BA.

"I am very deflated, disappointed, disgusted by this loss at Akron. Seems like Ohio Football will never get over the hump.
"That said, I have been around long enough to have some perspective.
But I know how bad things used to be, and could maybe be again when Coach Solich is no longer there - whether on his terms or someone else's."

AMEN Bobcat Pride! Keep preaching it as some of these fans fail to remember the days of 8 wins in five seasons.
