There are now 80 teams in and 3 still alive for bowl bids. That’s 83 teams for 78 slots, which means two to five eligible teams won’t go to a bowl. The list below shows the number of slots for each conference in brackets, the teams that are already in and the teams that are still alive. The conferences account for only 68 of the bowl slots because there are six at-large slots for the New Year's Six bowls and four slots in the playoff. The 6-6 teams from “G5” conferences that have more eligible teams than bowl slots are less likely to get a bid. They’re hashtagged.

AAC [7]: IN (7) – USF, UCF, Memphis, SMU, Houston, Navy, Temps

ACC/ND [8]: IN (10) – NCSt, Clemson, MiamiF, VaTech, ND, UVA, L’ville, Wake, BC, Duke; Still Alive (1) – FSU (5-6)

B10 [10]: IN (8) – O$U, PSU, Wisc, MSU, Mich, Iowa, NW, Purdue

B12 [7]: IN (8) – TCU, Okla, OklaSt, IowaSt, WVU, KState, Texas, Tx Tech

CUSA [7]: IN (10) – T’erd, UAB, FIU, FAU, NTex, SMiss, WKU#, UTSA, LaTech#, MTSU#

MAC [4]: IN (7) – Toledo, OHIO, NIU, WMU#, CMU, Akron, Buffalo#

MWC [5]: IN (6) – SDSU, CSU, Boise, Fresno, Wyo, UtahSt#

PAC12 [5]: IN (9) – Wash, WashSt, USC, Stanford, AZ, Oregon, AZSt, Cal, Utah

SEC [9]: IN (10) – UGA, Bama, Auburn, LSU, UK, SCar, MissSt, TxA&M, Mizzou, Ole Miss

SB [5]: IN (4) – Troy, AppSt, GaSt, ArkSt; Still Alive (2) – ULL, NMSt (both 5-6)

Indies [1]: IN (1) – Army

Here are the remaining schedules of the “still alive” teams:
FSU vs ULM (4-7)
ULL at AppSt (7-4)
NMSt vs SBama (4-7)

Real good chance that at least 1 MAC team doesn't get bowl bid and probably several C-USA teams.

This begs the question-is this the year a team or two declines a minor bowl? Maybe even Ohio?

Schools are foolish to decline a bowl bid unless their team is truly a M*A*S*H unit. That said, I am confident in the MAC offices to ensure that all eligible teams go bowling versus the other group of 5 conferences. Steinbrecher does a pretty bang up job on getting schools in.

Big 10 will have at least four open bowls -- Taxslayer (SEC), Foster Farms (PAC 12), Quick Lane (ACC), and Heart of Dallas (Big 12). Other "P" teams will be available for most of them. AAC will likely have one opening since UCF will probably get a NY6 -- Cure (Sun Belt).

Not true. Several teams have declined for various reasons.

What I was saying is that unless you're injured, you don't turn down games today. I also was saying that declinings never come along in this day and age. Back then, yes declined bids happened due to academics (O$U and the Rose Bowl). Not so many in today's world.

Sometimes teams decline because they felt that they didn't achieve the goals they had and didn't see the point of another game. Pretty sure the Irish declined a few years back.
Even one member of this years Bobcats said after the Akron game that "everything" they worked for had been lost.

Some "P"s have turned down bowls that didn't have enough stature for them. I think the Pizza Bowl was one of them. The International Bowl was another, as I recall.

As I recall, the LaTech situation was different. They had had a terrific year and were holding out for a better bowl. When that didn't happen, the ship had already sailed and Ohio was on board. I think it was their last year in the Sun Belt, as well as MTSU's, and neither team got any help from the SB in landing a bowl.
