I love Rourke's upside and his running ability, but we need to figure this forward pass thing out. He's had games this year of 13/24, 17/31, 7/22, 8/17, 7/15, and last night 9/22. Six games with sub 55% completion percentage, and four of those games he was sub 50%. When this team ends up in 3rd and 6, 3rd and 8, we're toast unless he can break a run. I know 3rd and long is never a high conversion rate, but especially last night it felt like we had no chance in those situations. Have to find some measure of consistency in the passing game.

No doubt he needs to improve.

Hopefully having a healthier receiving corps next season will also help his numbers.

Great thread and good point. For all the success Rourke's had to date, he definitely needs to improve in the passing game andwith more experience I think he will. Games like last night, while really painful to go through, will help Rourke in the future. Hopefully.

He is accurate, our receivers don't create separation, plus they drop passes as well. He does need to make better decisions, but we need to recruit better. Our tight ends probably have less than 10 receptions.

Yes the new Bobcat QB makes some mistakes, but he has been a pleasure watching this season. He has had some difficult days passing, but is a huge threat in the run game, which has really added to the offense. The Bobcats are scoring at a high rate most weeks and he is the main reason. He turns it over probably more than the coaches would like, but remember he hasn't even been on campus 12 months yet. Hopefully with another spring and summer under his belt he will continue to make strides in all parts of his game.

Good post, but a a few points of contention.

1. I think last night our problem was that we did the "Forward Pass" too much. Where were the screens? or Bubble Screens to Wrs? This game was screaming for them.

2. Play calling was a big issue here. It seems every pass was a designed deep ball play action. Rarely was he rolling out.

3. Running Game wasn't even very creative, mostly read option. If that isn't working, we need to switch it up.

Albin has had one of his better years, but I am wondering how much of that was on the actual play calling. If read option works, then life is easy. The true test is when you need to get creative, and he almost always fails in that regard. If the game plan needs to be complicated...we're in trouble. Albin got outcoached by a good D coordinator.

Ohio still scored 34 points despite three turnovers. It's interesting to see how upset so many people are about the offense when it has performed so well all year (and even the overall result in this game was good. Scoring 34 points should be enough to win a game). As noted, the offense has done this despite the fact that the passing game has been lacking. Rourke obviously has to get better in this aspect. The receivers have to get better too.

I think the reason for people being upset over the offense is the situational playcalling, not necessarily that the offense is terrible.

I completely agree the WR's need to improve. Anyone watching that game had to see the difference in separation between Akron WR's and ours. I can't believe it was all Akron's DB's just being better or the scheme. Our guys were rarely not blanketed, Akron had WR's catching passes with nobody within 2-3 yards of them consistently. That said, most of the passes weren't close to accurate enough for completions, anyway. And when we had guys open, we had some critical drops. I'm looking at you, Mangen.

If Dorian Brown/Cope are unable to play vs Buffalo it will be that much tougher to grab a win. Buffalo is on a roll the last three games and the QB has played a huge part in those wins. The Bulls QB has thrown for well over 300 yards in each of those wins and they have an excellent WR who has totaled 1200 yards and a dozen tds. The WR scored 4 tds vs Ball State. Buffalo lost at home to NI by a point and in 7 OT's to Western. This game will be a struggle and come down to the wire. It certainly won't be a cakewalk that some expect.
