ATHENS, Ohio – The Mid-American Conference announced this week the opponents for the 2018 Ohio football season.

In 2018, the Bobcats will host Akron, Bowling Green, Buffalo and Ball State while traveling to face Kent State, Miami, Northern Illinois and Western Michigan.

Ohio has previously announced its nonconference slate for the 2018 season which will include opening the season at home against Howard (Sept. 1) then traveling to Virginia (Sept. 15) and Cincinnati (Sept. 22) before closing nonconference action at home against UMass (Sept. 29).

Dates for Ohio's 2018 MAC schedule will be announced at a later time.

Ohio closes out the 2017 season facing off against UAB at the 2017 Bahamas Bowl on Dec. 22.

Favorable home schedule. This team could do something very special if they score two major ACC road victories, which they should. An undefeated home stretch would go a long way as well.

Pretty reasonable schedule for Ohio to win some games next year.

We bring back a lot of key pieces. At the bare minimum, we know we will have a Frank Solich offensive line that'll be able to run wild in the MAC. That sets the floor very high.

If Rourke continues to develop this could get really fun...

The interesting thing with this schedule as of now the second weekend, is open. Akron also currently has a Sept. 8 date open. Maybe the MAC will schedule a league game on that date? With all the Tuesday-Thursday games in November, this could be an option unless some of the current dates get moved.

Was thinking the same thing, ha!

I posted this in a previous post a while back ... but I was pretty accurate with my guesses on the schedule

UVA - L
UC - L
Howard - W
UMass - W
Akron - W
Kent - W
Buffalo - W
Miami - W
NIU - L
WMU - L
Ball St - W
BG - W

Wash. Rinse. Repeat.

... now that I think of it, that would make a helluva t-shirt promoting the 2018 season.

Settle down, folks .... was simply a joke!!!!

I think the second week almost has to be a league game because Ohio typically doesn't get a full bye week due to MACtion scheduling.

Note: we only play 1 ACC team next year (Virginia). Cincinnati is in the similarly named AAC. UMASS was an independent this year, and to my knowledge will remain one next year.

Akron is the only other opponent to have 9/8 open. Book it for 7pm and a major payback.

NIU's non-conference is at Iowa, at FSU, at BYU and home to Utah.

Don't dis Howard! They pulled off one of the biggest upsets in college football history last year. A $500 Vegas bet would have netted you about $4.5 million.

Obviously why NIU is dodging them ...

And why we loaded up our schedule with them.

UC and UVA are really good non-conference opponents for Ohio it's interesting. Realistically at this stage of the game I only care about MAC wins. Who cares about the other four opponents?

That would probably get us in the MAC Championship game.

What I am going to say will irritate a few people who post on this website. The Huskies non-league schedule, although very ambitious is just asking for trouble. Maybe the NI administrators mandated they play three money games as the Utah game is home or possibly at Soldier Field? They could very well win a game, but Vegas will probably have them under dogs in all four. If they lose all four and are fortunate to win six in the league, then they probably won't play in the post season. Of course maybe that is not high on their list of goals, but most college athletes want to play in bowl games. It is one of the reasons they put in countless number of hours during the season and in the spring and summer. I'm guessing the Huskies coaching staff is not licking their chops over that schedule.

They just beat Nebraska this year, the schedule will help them recruit better. NIU won’t be an easy win or play scared. They are not small thinkers, they have played in a BCS game before.

Or here's an idea ... rather than scheduling to automatically make a bowl (i.e. Howard, UMass, etc) ..... maybe have faith in your program and no fear.

LIne up the big boys ... Iowa, Utah, Florida St, BYU in 2018

And again in 2019 ... at Nebraska, at Utah, at Vandy

And again in 2020 ... BYU (at home), at Maryland, at Iowa

I think going to a recruit and saying that we'll play that kind of schedule .... AND we'll be in the hunt for the MAC West and MACC every year sells a lot better than .... say .... we'll play Howard, UMass, FAU, UL Lafayette and Texas St ... AND we'll go to the Potato Bowl!!!!

Gimmie the NIU approach over the Ohio approach every day of the week.

NIU didn't get to become the premiere program in the MAC and the dominant program in this league the last 8 years by loading up on games vs. FBS punching bags and wins over the MAC East.

I, for one, definitely care about non-conference opponents. Just like in basketball. Let's play, and beat, quality opponents.

It's only one game . . . but you are probably right NIU was afraid to face the mighty Bison! smiley wink laugh

What, you saying that Akron, on the second weekend of the season will be just an OHIO victory away from being the East Champ?

OHIO could pound them 62-0 and it wouldn't be a down payment on a payback.

UC was a disappointment this year. We have to beat them. I'm jacked for a home game here in Cinci! Been looking forward to the match up for a long time.

I say we beat WMU. 9-3 or 10-2.

I used to do this with my beloved Dolphins the day their schedule was released. Now I don't bother given they generally don't sniff playoff possibilities.
