Kind of reminds me of a short announcement I saw in our local paper last July. Among announcements for workouts/tryouts/two-a-days/etc.. was the one announcing conditioning for the Newark High School bowling team was to begin the following week. I had to chuckle as I tried to figure out what conditioning the bowling coach had in mind.

(My sincerest apologies to offended bowlers)

As a former bowler, I can assure you that hand and arm strength is important. After all, you're repeatedly tossing a 16lb chunk of plastic at high speed, with high rotational velocity (unless you're talking candlepins or duckpins). Bowlers did not go through conditioning drills in my day, but in retrospect, it would have had some benefit.

As for eSports, I'm not sure what conditioning drills they would do. Perhaps specialized finger dexterity drills? I have to admit that DA's comment above cracked me up.

My apologies to L.C., but when I read this, the thing that came immediately to mind was lifting pitchers of beer. Seems like bowling and beer kind of go together.

I'm just pissed that this wasn't a thing in the early 2000s. I would have been a competitive Tetris player--not necessarily 1st Team All-MAC, but at least Honorable Mention.

Now if we're talking Super Mario World speed runs? I'm a Heisman finalist. I legit think I set a world record in the dorms on that game. I swear I had a sub 10 minute glitchless run in 2002, and this website says that has never happened.

I've been told, although not sure how accurately, that there is scholarship money out there for bowlers. If so, I might start taking my 11-yr old son to the local lanes more often.

Ever since Title IX, that's true of all sports other than Football and Basketball, except, I suppose, wrestling. I know UNL has only women's bowling as a scholarship sport.

So, maybe my mistake was not getting my 18-year-old freshman daughter to the local lanes more often in her youth.

Something smells bad in this story. UA's board has been controlled by political hacks for 20 years, much to the detriment of the school. Perhaps the current prez doesn't want to put up with it any longer. Additionally, their law school's rating have been dropping like a rock, and that's where the prez is transferring to, apparently.

Akron could become part of KSU in the next 5 years. The ship is sinking.

As I've said before on this board, I think that's the best solution. It might have happened back in the 1960s or early '70s if it wasn't for Oliver Ocasek, a powerful state legislator from that area who often got his way on these kinds of matters. As I recall, though the details are dim in my memory, he was the major factor in killing the proposal that Gov. Rhodes had made to merge the two schools. SBH, do you remember any of the detais?

With all due respect to the physical rigors and strains bowling has, my mind instantly went to this scene, specifically the :30 or so mark:

Any merger between Akron and Kent State reminds me of the following. Back in the 1990s Carol Cartwright became president of Kent State. I got to know her well. Not long after taking on the presidency she floated a balloon that had her deleting the word State from the university's name. Not long afterward I saw her again and asked what happened to her balloon. She shrugged and smiled wryly. Said I, "Alumni backlash?" Yes, she nodded.

Sooo, it's easy to imagine the Kent State reaction to any proposal linking its name to Akron's.

In Rhodes' day the proposal was for a "merger" with a new name: The University of Northeast Ohio." Today, the cards are all in Kent's court, and if it happens, U of Akron will become the downtown campus of Kent STATE University! ;-) [Yes, I remember the experiment to drop "state" from the KSU name.]

A couple of things. The KSU name change was an internal matter, so alumni pressure held some sway. The KSU-Akron merger will be a state matter. How powerful are the KSU/Akron alumni on a statewide basis? Not very would be my hunch. Factor in that it just simply makes sense from a fiscal standpoint and from a higher education standpoint and that OSU will likely push it behind the scenes. Opposition? Possibly from UC (which might see a competitor being created) and from BGSU and UT (which might see themselves as next in line for a shotgun wedding).

Sorry for the thread drift, but I'm really good at it -- one of my talents. However, does anyone remember when BGSU tried the same thing? I don't remember the exact timeframe, but I think it might have been sometime in the 1980s, when a president of Bowling Green said the proportion of state support had slipped so much that he was going to drop "State" from the name of the institution. So for awhile, I think maybe no more than a year or two, all the news releases out of that institution called it Bowling Green University. Anyone remember the details of this?
