1. On sky kick kickoffs, if you fair catch the ball inside the 25, the ball starts at the 25.
2. New rules on blocking by the OL - no blocks below the waist beyond 5 yards past the line of scrimmage
3. All blocks below the waist, except by OL have to be head on
4. If there is an official review on a play where the clock would have continued to run, there will be a 10 second runoff after the review.

#2, is not just an OL rule, no player can block low more than 5 yards down the field., and all blocks must be 10:00to 2:00.

#3. It’s not head on but rather a 10:00 to 2:00 approach angle, that is not new.

How long before they eliminate the kickoff altogether? It sounds like the NFL is debating it's usefulness in their rules committee meetings.

Tons of data, literally decades of injury reports that show the most serious injuries come from kick-offs.

Tons of data, literally decades of injury reports that show the most serious injuries come from kick-offs.
I wonder about punts? The data on injuries can't be far off from kick offs.

Devil's advocate on kickoffs in the NFL. If touchbacks still come out to the 20, but you move the kickoff five yards forward, wouldn't it make sense for kickers to make their kickoffs returnable? Since you're giving the coverage team an extra five yards they don't have to run, wouldn't the odds be pretty strong that they can tackle the return man before he reaches the 20?

That is exactly what has happened. As the incentive was made in 2011 (moving the KO up to the -35yd line) to make it easier to kick the ball into the EZ, the result was not significantly more touchbacks, but rather more directional and sky kicks, and the incidence of touchbacks did not increase. This puts the strategy in the hands of the return team, and not the kicking team.

Has it? That's surprising to me. I'm not looking at any stats; I'm just saying what I observe from watching games. It seems returned kickoffs are extremely rare anymore.

The Schiano proposal for kickoffs is an interesting idea. I'm not sure I would want to see it implemented, but it's worth debating and maybe even trying in NFL preseason games.
