Shane Yates and Travis Carrie are two others who were granted sixth years. I believe there was one other as well, in about 2008 or 2009.

Hardship typically means missing two seasons due to injury. For example, Carrie was eligible since he missed 2009 and 2012 due to injury. Carpenter had a unique situation in that he only missed partial seasons, and as a result played against Marshall in six consecutive years (and gave them fits).

Will Irons be a junior in terms of eligibility this fall?
Senior
OK, so this past year when he was suspended counted against his eligibility since he'd already had a redshirt? Is that correct?
Your clock begins the day you enroll and step foot in class. 5 years to play 4
Can't you in some circumstance get a sixth year for a medical redshirt? I realize this doesn't apply to Irons, unless he wants to claim that his behavior was due to some type of mental illness! ;-)
You can get a 6th year with a hardship, however those are rare and mostly hard to get (see Antonio Campbell), and those are ONLY granted after the 4 years of eligibility are used. In the case we are discussing a suspension from campus for disciplinary reasons is NOT a reason for an extra year.
No hard data to back it up, but it seems a 6th year is typically granted to football and basketball players from power conferences and not to Ohio University-type schools. Or maybe it's just my imagination.
We have had a few 6th guys, there has to be real medical documentation

One of Rutgers wrestlers is trying to get a 6th year so the topic has been talked about a lot out here.

Missing 2 seasons,or at least most of 2 seasons seems to be the key to getting the 6th season.

In this wrestler's case he only missed part of the NCAA tournament in last season and all of this season,so most people aren't optimistic.
