Is this the biggest unknown going into Spring Camp? I think it's a talented but inexperienced group I have no idea who ends up starting at any of the spots. Crouch sure but at what position? Should be an interesting Spring.

And here I thought you were talking about the dorms on the South Green.

If you go by experience then Crouch and Popp and Cooner make up the 3 lbers. Any of them could play there. With Crouch in the middle there would be more OLB competition with guys like Dorsa and Brunson....Robinson and Clack. A true freshman could surprise here as well.

I think we will surprise people with our Defensive Linemen. Payne was solid last year and we return Berger with experience. Will Evans and Brian Arp have also gotten some time. We will need some younger guys to step up but I don't see us struggling as much as some people think we will.

Front 7 on defense almost has to be the biggest unknown by default since we've got so much coming back elsewhere on the roster!

I'm very curious to hear who people expect to start at these spots.

This was my wild-ass guess at a front seven two-deep a few weeks ago:

DE: Berger, Conrad
DT: Payne, Caesar
NT: Coleman, Burks
DE: Evans, Key
SLB: Conner, Dorsa
MLB: Popp, Clack
WLB: Crouch, Robinson

I'm sure that's wrong, but the exercise helped me realize how many options we have. We are deep. How talented, I don't know. But if one guy isn't getting it done, there should be plenty of others who can slide in and get a shot.

I think Conrad will get lots of time at DE.

Look for JUCO DT Cole Baker to be in the mix.

Supposedly Amir Miller and Sam McKnight were ahead of many of the DE's you list, but were both hurt last year, forcing some others into the limelight. I also presume they wouldn't have taken JUCO Cole Baker unless they thought he had a good shot at the two-deep. When all is said and done, I have no idea what the two deep will look like.

Caesar is the X factor, I think. He was getting rave reviews in practice last year, so he should see the field this season. I could see him at DE with Baker inside, especially on running downs. Right now I have him inside.

But maybe he needs another year to develop, so Baker does get the nod ahead of him.

The point is, it's early March and I am having dreams about September.

So who's the next MLB stud? Seems like there's a year or two between one of those guys stepping into the role from day one.

Muncy, Keller, Poling...

I’d go with Crouch or Conner.

My starters would be McKnight and Evans at the ends, Caesar and Burks at the tackles. At linebacker, I have Dorsa, Crouch and Robinson, with Thompson breaking the two deep. Baker will get a lot of minutes across the the whole DL. Coleman will get a lot of minutes at DT

If healthy, Amir Miller can play the edge really well. Lots of depth and options along the D-line. As far as linebackers, I think Crouch moves to the Mike position. Conner is the best choice for strong side, but I heard they are moving Gullett to linebacker to compete for the position during spring ball. Could end up being Gullett, Crouch and Conner. I see Popp and Robinson backing them up if Robinson can learn the defense. I'm looking forward to going out in a few weeks and seeing who else looks ready to step up and play.

I like Conner and Crouch and Gullett....quite the athletic group with some experience.

I'm not saying we're gonna run the 46 defense, but that sounds a lot like the 46 defense, and I like it.

Alright I started this so I should weight in because I am certainly intrigued by the defense and the amount of question marks.

DE-Will Evans, McKnight
DT-Berger, Payne
DT-Caeser, Coleman/Burks
DE-Miller, Conrad
WLB-Crouch, Brunson
MLB-Popp,Robinson
SLB-Conner, Dorsa

The Spring should be a good judge. Are we sure Conrad stays on defense?

I like it too. And I know Collins likes it. But I don't know if Burrows can be swayed. We can run a lot of cover 3 with that group too. So many options when you have backers that can cover!

Revisiting this topic....

From Arkley's twitter summary of last week's scrimmage, it sounds like Will Evans and Austin Conrad are showing well at DE. Robinson at OLB and Caesar from the inside of the line were also mentioned as having sacks.

I like Conrad at DE.

Robinson not only gives us depth but some added speed
at OLB.

Caesar is gonna be a beast at DT.
