Didn't want this to get lost in Siberia.
There was a piece on the news about at least 500,000 routers worldwide being hacked,
The FBI has recommended that,if you have a router, you reboot it.

How can we be sure that this really came from the FBI and not some Russian hackers posing as the FBI?

The last thing I need is them hacking my BobcatAttack account. Could be Monroe hacking it perhaps to access all the users of BA?

Why would the Russians, let alone the FBI care about my latest woodworking project?

FWIW, My said Friday that his server got hacked, and they encrypted his server, demanding bitcoins. I thought it was a curious claim at the time, but maybe it wasn't.

A few of my clients, including a couple of Towns, have gotten hit with ransom ware.
The ended up having to pay.
My company has 4 independent computer systems. One for each department.
Last year one of the systems got hit with ransom wear.
Fortunately, each system has an external hard drive back up system.
It backs up the files everyday, and the entire drive twice a week.
It also retains the back ups for 6 months.
So,in my case, all we had to do was take out the corrupt drive, install a new one and restore the system.
We got the ransom ware in because one of our secretaries violated company protocol and used her work station to click on a link on Craig's List, because her phone died.
Needless to say, she's no longer one of our secretaries.

The ransomware is probably unrelated to this router attack, from what I can see.

From what I read, the hack put Malware on the routers.
The FBI took down the ring's website before they could send out instructions to the routers.
But they could still be infected.

I called my internet provider who supplied my router and they confirmed this issue.
They did mention not all routers are subject to this issue. They also mentioned that rebooting will help.

It helps because it is a 3 part malware. One part is now in your firmware, and only can be eliminated via a firmware update. What that part does is try to download the rest of the malware from a website. The FBI has taken over that website, so if you reboot, it eliminates parts 2 and 3, and they can no longer be downloaded.

So, uh, dumb question. We just unplug the router, wait a few minutes, and plug it back in. Correct?

Yes, or switch it off and back on. You can also log into the router and initiate a re-boot.
