Comparing Mayfield and Manziel is insulting. One is a guy who walked on at two major football programs, has an in incredible football IQ and works harder than anyone else on his team. The other was Johnny Football, a gridiron concoction half Billy Madison, half Billy Carter.

I have no idea if Baker Mayfield is good enough or big enough to be an elite NFL quarterback, but it won't be because he's another Johnny Manziel.
I agree that there is no comparison between Mayfield and Manziel as college quarterbacks; however, comparing the pro game with the college game is like comparing apples to oranges. The real question is whether the Browns have been suckered once again into accepting all the hype.

It seems pretty clear that an undersized quarterback starts with having a distinct disadvantage in the pro game. That doesn't mean that this disadvantage can't be overcome. Russell Wilson being a perfect example of the exception to this particular rule of thumb.

All that said, I would love to see the Browns become relevant again, but drafting Mayfield, like was the case with Manziel, seems like a high stakes sort of bet that lacks the better odds that might have gone along with drafting the likes of Sam Darnold, Josh Allen, and Josh Rosen.

As my acting teacher in college once said, "Make it big or blow it big!"
Agreed that drafting Mayfield might be a risk given his height, but Tim Couch had an interesting comment in today's Cleveland Plain Dealer. His observation was that in today's NFL even 6' 4" quarterbacks can't see over their offensive lineman, which for the most part is true. His belief is that it's more important that quarterbacks be able to move their feet to find the throwing lanes and be able to move in the pocket. These are qualities Mayfield excels at (together with his accuracy). So we'll see. I will say, John Dorsey, Alonzo Highsmith and Elliot Wolf all have outstanding reputations in being able to draft NFL talent, perhaps more so than any Browns front office in years, and they were very high on Mayfield, as allegedly were Broncos GM John Elway and the Patriots' Bill Belichick.

I was not a fan of Josh Allen. His lack of accuracy scares me. On NFL Radio this week Brian Billick said the mistake they the Ravens made in drafting Kyle Boller was that they thought Boller's lack of accuracy in college was due to a lack of talent around him and that the Ravens could correct that. Turns out they couldn't. QBs that are inaccurate in college (where the windows to throw into are larger) are generally inaccurate in the pros. Deshon Kizer proved that axiom.

I’m not a Browns fan, and I don’t know how he will pan out. But I will say that I didn’t like Rosen, Darnold or Allen. So Mayfield may well be the best quarterback in the class.

That was my intent. I'll agree that you can make a case that they're not the same guy, but the pick remains stupid. Undersized, immature, cocky.

Throwing a hotheaded, arrogant an immature kid into the cesspool of the Browns organization is not prudent.

Manziel, who was/is a trainwreck off the field, is the reigning champion of shitshow, but Mayfield's still got a sloppy arrest and enough other incidents that a lot of teams wrote him off. I guess I side with them, and I'm not alone. From the PD article...

"Baker has a pattern of disrespect,'' said one scout. "Off-the-field, he's Johnny Manziel.''

Said one coach: "He needs work. He's going to be a challenge."

Said one high-level NFL personnel executive: "He has not shown anywhere near enough emotional maturity to handle what's coming his way. ... A lot of Manziel characteristics."

I dunno. As a Browns fan, if our fan base hate the picks this much, my guess is it was a great draft.

+1

I like contrarian logic. It's worked for me many times in the past.
