With NASCAR I blame the ticket prices, their primary demographic is choosing between going and starving. How is it a ticket on the mainstand costs north of $100? It’s a real problem
Its not just ticket prices.
I have a number of friends who were big fans of NASCAR.
They lost interest because a lot of rule changes, including "overtime" and points for winning "stages".
They just shifted to other types of car racing.
Yes, NASCAR had such a unique flavor in sports that the corporate overlords killed via marketing gimmicks. I personally gave up on it with the "Car of Tomorrow"--the manufacturer rivalries were one of the best parts of NASCAR.
(Also, I don't care who the primary sponsor is or what tobacco advertising law is, it's still the Winston Cup, damn it!)
The initial reasoning for the COT was for safety, which I'm fine with. But I'm with you, the only thing now that differentiates a Ford from a Chevy, from a Toyota is the nose. I still love watching it, but I wish they'd take harder looks at the actual cars in their assessments of the rules.

Ticket prices are a big potential problem. If it wasn't so expensive, I'd probably go to Cup races 2-3 times a year. What's odd to me though is that the best racing in NASCAR, in my opinion, are the truck races - where there are cheap tickets, and no one goes to those.
As for stage racing, and playoffs, etc. I actually like all of it, and think it's very good, but perhaps I'm in the minority. I like all forms of racing with four wheels besides drag racing. What I haven't been able to comprehend is how sprint car racing hasn't captured more attention by TV networks. You want to talk about a (usually) good product to watch, go watch the World of Outlaws or the Arctic Cat All Stars somewhere.
