maybe not, but everyone it seems can be a captain on the OHIO football team. It used to be that a team would have one captain. Then you'd occasionally see co-captains. A few more years and it was sometimes tri-captains. Now, today, it's just about any number you want to come up with. OHIO will have SEVEN captains next year, according to an article by Arkley in today's paper. They will be Rourke, Ouellette, Lowery, Hagan, Nelson, Berger, and Croutch. I know that this "captain inflation" has been going on for a number of years, but I don't like and I'm going to make fun of it every chance I get.

I don’t think its anyone’s business unless you are a voter or were ever a Captain for Ohio Football. period.
Just like the Coaches determine who plays the student/athletes determine who they want to represent them as Ohio Captains. Its no Trophy its an HONOR. ✌🏾

Trophies are given as the recognition of an honor due an individual. I see no difference between having seven captains of a football team and seven valedictorians in a graduating class. I know I'm in the minority here, but I do see this as the same general phenomenon as "everyone gets a trophy." It cheapens the meaning of what it is to be the captain of a football team. It used to be a real honor, now it's watered down by giving it to multiple players.

I guess times have changed (get off my lawn).

When I played soccer at O.U. and wrestled at FDU being Captain was never really a big deal.

In fact,I don't even remember how we chose them.

It would be interesting to know what the voting criteria was to be named a Captain.

This isn't 1950 Pleasantville where one guy is the captain of a 12-0 football team that scores 100 points per game and everyone is two-way player. There are close to 100 guys on this team. You want ONE captain?

Maybe we need a few lieutenants or sergeants.

I would like to know what exactly these Captains do ?

Next we'll have a "Head Captain" who is the leader of the Captains.

We always used to think of the Captain as the best athlete/leader of the team.
There can only be one "best".

In soccer, the Captain came out for a handshake at the start of the game.

In wrestling the Captain led warm-ups and picked (odd-even) which team's wrestlers got "choice" (top/bottom) for the second period of the match.

We also have a leadership council on the team which is an even bigger group.

I think a Leadership Council is a really good idea.

I presume it's set up with representatives from each "discipline" (Qb's,Rb's etc)
on the team.

OCF should be happy to know that the 7 captains is still 2 short of what the "evil empire" had last year.

Like the leadership council the captains are spread across disciplines: QB (does anyone doubt his inclusion?), RB (yea, he's not a leader), OL, DB (anyone offended?), Safety, LB and DL.

Go ahead and make fun of it. I'm sure the players will be devastated by your ridicule. Here are a couple of twitter feeds in case you want to reach out directly. @nathan_rourhe and @Ouellette_AJ12

Come on, it appears you are being intentionally obtuse. I'm obviously not upset at the players. I'm upset at the concept of multiple captains.

My opinion, have each discipline select an individual who they feel, based on agreed upon criteria, who should be the team captain.

Then the team votes.

The person with the most votes is captain.

Like I've said,I'm old school.
To me,having more then one captain, diminishes the importance of the title.

Obviously the football team disagrees.

Maybe someone on the staff has an "in" with a company that makes "C" patches. :-)

Leadership is most important. I do not expect this number to be repeated. It is exciting that there are this many Captain types. This bodes well. I will be more at ease when things get tight.

I remember Urban saying something last summer about how if 3 captains is good then 7 captains is better and 9 is even better. Reminded me of Spinal Tap and turning the amp up to 11.

I would say that captains are the link between coaches and players. AKA the captains are trusted the most by coaches to get direct feedback on team culture, moral, etc. They may have some other responsibilities but make no mistake about it, coaches will use the captains to get information that probably wouldn't make it back to the offices. In my playing days, I would always be wary of what I was saying around the captains b/c of the chances it gets back to coach.

Remember my first game snap, starter injured, me next man up, play called behind me, breaking the huddle the Captain reminded me I only had my own man to beat, but, not to come back to the huddle if we did not make the first down. Coaching a Captain's role came with the understanding that Captains never take plays off and make plays when the game is on the line.

The captains are voted in by the players. So if you don’t like it you will need to address the players. Not the coaches or AD or media. Kinda seems like a silly thing to complain about...but hey.

Don't try to shift the blame. The coaches decide how to set this up. They obviously are just going along with the trend of having multiple captains. Perhaps, in today's climate that's the best thing for them to do, because it's what the players have come to expect given their experiences in high school and what other colleges are doing; but nonetheless, it does devalue what the word "captain" used to mean in football.

Hey, there are worse things to complain about. There are actually alumni complaining over in the basketball messageboard that Ohio is putting up a hanging video scoreboard in the Convo when in reality Ohio is many, many years behind the times in doing so and is just catching up to the 20th Century.
