A friend who is a long time follower of Ohio football thinks that those who participate on Bobcat Attack significantly over-estimate the team's quality and coaching.

The friend proposes this bet to anyone interested: $100 that Solich as head coach at Ohio will have a season (usually 14 games) in which he goes 18-0 (not a typo) before he'll win a MAC title.

The friend pledges to donate any winnings on this bet to Ohio University.

This doesn't seem to make sense to me. Would you have to win the MAC title to go 18-0? 18-0 would assume, what? That we win 14 games, win MAC championship, then win 2 games in the playoffs? He is saying that OHIO will do this or won't do this? I don't think there's a single poster on this site that believes OHIO is capable of that or anything close to that.

The bet that's more interesting is whether OHIO ever wins the MAC during Solich's tenure. He could be done after this year or he could last five more years. However, if we show major regression this year, the university and Solich may mutually agree to go another direction.

Also, is it even possible to play 18 games in a single season? Assuming a 12 game regular season, winning the MACC is 13 games. The winning 2 games in the BCS Play-offs for the National Championship totals 15 games. I don't know where the other 3 games would come from.

I think you are all missing the point.

The guy is saying it's more likely that Ohio will go 18-0 under Solich (which is obviously impossible in CFB) than Ohio wins a MACC under Solich.

Therefore ... he is suggesting it is impossible Ohio will win a MACC under Solich.

I can see the man's point ... if after 14 years it hasn't happened ... then when?

I've been very vocal on this board on my feelings towards Frank.

I've seen some equate him to Doug Collins.

He resurrected a program that was not 6-feet under ... but 60-feet under and has turned them into a competitive program that wins more than it loses.

But I also think we've plateaued and we are who we are ... a 7-8 win program that is always bowl eligible but unable to take that next step to being a championship program.

Tip off on Monroe would have been if half of winnings went to school of accountancy, the other half for a swanky pet carry-all.

As far as seriously considering the bet, the thing to worry about is Ohio drops divisions and wins an FCS national championship? This wager is like a riddle. I can't take it myself but I hope someone does. It's what I'd characterize as a safe bet.

I still believe Ohio can win the MAC this year, but they have to play better.

Monroe was a long-time poster that was exiled from the site a year or so ago. The fact that he is proposing a bet that “Hell will freeze over” before Ohio wins an MACC gives you an insight into his approach. Additionally, the fact that he had well over 10,000 posts over the previous few years alone, provides you an inkling of how suffocating and exhausting his rhetoric was. He even acknowledged in posts and private messages that his intent was to post and post and post and post until others came around to his views (i.e., use this site to beat people into submission). Appreciating this site is for the exchange of ideas and views about Ohio sports, and to celebrate the teams and athletes involved, but to not provided an individual platform that becomes dominant to the greater whole, the decision was made to ban him. Through emails and PMs he has reached out to myself and others including LC, who initiated this thread.

Best advice – move on from Monroe, 3-Ball, etc.

I watched Cornell and Penn play on ESPN+ last night. It was some of the worst football that I have ever seen played. It made me appreciate Ohio, Solich, and the rest of the coaching staff.

isn't he suggesting this:

$1000,

if ohio goes 18-0 in a season, you pay him $1000

if ohio wins MAC title, he pays you $1000.

where do i sign up?

people may or may not overvalue ohio and solich, but i think they are a legit contender in the MAC race many years.

I was at OU in 1968 and remember that Championship year. I am now 68 and, obviously, I haven't seen one since. I had hoped that maybe 50 years later history would repeat itself. Then, I remembered...THIS IS OU football. I guess I guess I should just accept that I will go to my grave with only the one Championship memory...and I hope to live another 10-15 years!
