Game got moved to ESPN 2. That is big for the program.
It's also listed as a 4:15 starting time instead of the 4:30 previously announced: http://www.espn.com/watch/schedule/?categoryId=64&startDa...

The Deuce has Georgia's game scheduled for 7:15.
For those in the Columbus area, the folks in the Central Ohio Chapter had organized a Gamewatch at Blarney Stone Tavern and their new location for 3pm. With the confirmation this is now on EPSN2, the Game watch is still on with the new time. I used to be on of those who did such things, and don't any longer.

I just wanted to make sure everyone on BA in the Columbus area that wanted to join in to watch was aware. The Blarney Stone has a brand new location, still on Dublin Granville Rd in Linworth, in the new build area right next to Borgata Pizza (2285 Dublin Granville Rd) across the street from Crafty Pint. Easy freeway access off 315 at 161.

It's got to be a big financial hit for Virginia. They're still paying the money to Ohio to play, but now it is getting no income while having to pay travel expenses. I wonder if Virginia has to pay Vanderbilt for use of the stadium? Either way, it's got to be a big loss for Virginia.

I can't see how it wouldn't have been better to play in Athens, even if it meant Virginia had to still pay Ohio. Maybe Ohio could have offered some of the revenue or some kind of discount in the payment (maybe it did). Either way, it would seem less costly for Virginia, but maybe it was worth the financial difference in order to not play a true road game.
I have the same thoughts.

What exactly is in this for Virginia?
-They still pay Ohio $650K
-They now have to pay for travel
-Who is covering the costs for the stadium use?
-They don't get ticket revenue (free tickets?)
-Do they have to refund people tickets for the original game?
-Who gets TV revenue? Virginia? The conference? Split with the MAC or Ohio?

If I'm Virginia, I'm really questioning this decision from a financial perspective.
A couple simple answers.

UVa needs this game to have any shot at becoming bowl eligible (6 wins). The windfall for a potential bowl game is well worth making this game happen.

BUT ...

They also know Ohio isn't Kent or Akron or some other MAC slouch. So agreeing to play them on a neutral field is the only way they would probably do this. They know that rolling into Peden (while it might be financially cheaper on the front end) would put them at a significant disadvantage.
And I don't know all the specifics to their ACC Network deal which takes effect next year, but maybe money isn't really an issue for them? If their network explodes like the SEC Network, a boatload of cash will come into the coffers of these schools. Hell, if they even do half of what the SEC Network did, they'll be in good shape.

If they need this as a 6th win to be bowl eligible, they aren't going to get a good bowl with a big payout.

Depending on how the bowl picture/cancellation schedule shakes out, I wouldn’t be surprised if that 6-win requirement is waived.

The previous bowls they’ve been to include Military, Chick-Fil-A (now Peach) and Gator.

Among those three bowls is about a $1.5M average payout for each team. Half of that may go to the ACC, leaving $750K in bowl revenue.

You have to factor in big travel expenses. It cost Toledo $700K in expenses to go to the Potato Bowl.

That leaves $50K, plus another $50K from the share of the ACC take. So Virginia is plus $100K on the bowl.

But they spent $650K+ for the game that (possibly) puts them into bowl eligibility? Expenses that they can't recoup from ticket sales.

Maybe the TV revenue from the game makes up for it...

When I said windfall from a bowl ... it's not 100% monetary.

Bronco Mendenhall is trying to resurrect a program. A 6-6 bowl season (no matter the bowl) is easier to sell to fans, alum, recruits than a 5-6 season that results in no bowl.

It's not a guarantee that 6-6 makes a bowl ... and obviously not a 5-7 (or 5-6) ... so why put yourself in position to be left out. UVa is trying to get as many wins as possible ... and I'm sure when they scheduled Ohio they looked at that as a win.

That alone is worth $650k for them .... a simple drop in the bucket to an ACC school. Not the case for a MAC school

I suspect that to their athletic department (particularly their football staff), the non-monetary costs of not making a bowl game is weighing more heavily in their analysis than a strictly profit/loss view.

Look for a change in the starting linebacker group this weekend. Should be more effective. We’ll have Hagan and Hudson back as well. So the secondary should also be more effective. Expecting a better defensive effort this week. Hopefully Rourke and Co. can get the offense firing too. Go Cats!
I think you have a point there about the linebacker group. I could even see Senior lb Tyler Guillett getting more of the second and third down reps if someone isn't replaced. #25 generally looks like he has a grasp of things as he should as a senior. A ton of thinking at lb going on last week with the exception of the senior linebacker captain. I also expect Motley at cb to get more looks based on what we saw of the backup cbs last week. I have HIGH hopes for cb Hudson. I liked what I saw with the DL in week one: I saw some flashes there.
I expect to see Gullett start at weak side with Croutch moving to middle and Conner at strong side. I agree about Motley too, he looked good. I wish he were 10 lbs heavier though.
I had not thought of Crouch at MLB but I like it. For Sure re Motley: he could use those 10 pounds this week if he is planning on tackling that QB

Isn't that the lineup they used in the Spring? I was thinking it was Connor-Robinson at SLB, Croutch-Popp/Dorsa/Clack at MLB, and Gullet-Brunson at WLB.

Croutch didn’t participate in spring ball because of his off season shoulder surgery. But I had speculated he may move to the Mike position. I’m expecting the linebackers to be more effective with him in the middle.

We're going to win this game, take UVa's $650,000, make them shell out a bunch of money they weren't going to have to for travel. They'll end up a game shy of bowl eligibility, and an extra MAC team will get a bowl bid as a result of the ACC's ridiculous number of bowl slots (10? I think they have 10.).

Edit: And as a "thank you" for doing that work for the conference, next year we'll get the weird "no midweek games" schedule that it seems like one team gets every season.

Since when do schools in the ACC care what things cost? It's not even the same ballpark as anything Ohio deals with. They're not even an ACC power and they're just pulling the 650k from their couch cushions.

Exactly. Between what the conference makes in NCAA Tournament and Bowl Payouts, plus their TV deal, I don't think UVA is really hurting after writing a check for $650K. Remember, we're dealing with a conference that has had at least two teams in the Playoff/NY6 since it's inception. Going back further, they haven't had less than two teams in major bowls since 2012. That's a TON of money.
