Where does this conversation go if Howard beats Kent this weekend?

GO BOBCATS

And, what if Kent beats them by 28? Either won't change the facts, which as I see them are that Ohio has a win, Ohio needs to improve significantly on both sides of the ball, and that Ohio can win at Virginia, but only if they play a lot better.

How surprised were you by the OL's underwhelming performance?

Similarly, Howard needs to continue to improve as well. I believe that in most years the FCS champion would beat the MAC champion. Looking at the FCS championship tournament from last year, it appears that Howard's conference didn't even get an entry. NC A&T went undefeated at 12-0 and didn't make the playoffs? How can that even happen?
The MEAC and the SWAC champions started playing each other in the Heritage Bowl instead of participating in the FCS playoffs a few years ago. The conferences make way more money for it and the probably because the last time an HBCU team won an FCS title was back in 1978.

Interesting. Thus, we can say with complete assurance that Howard will not make the FCS playoffs this year.

Since they do not play for the FCS championship, and they do play for a bowl, does that make them FBS schools? ;)

In reading what I wrote, obviously "FBS school" is redundant. I should have just asked, "does that make them FBS?"

Welp, Kent drove the ball right down the field for 6 their first possession, and then held Howard to a 3 and out on their first possession....so early on, the transitive property isn't looking good for us.

Kent drills Howard 54-14. After gaining 640 against Ohio, Howard can't manage 300 yards of offense against Kent. After holding Ohio to 146 rushing, they give up 355 rushing to Kent State. The guy that torched Ohio, Ezzard, had no catches (was he out with an injury? I don't know.)

As I said, it doesn't change anything. As we knew, Ohio needs to get a lot better, and if they want to win the games from here out, they need to bring it every week.

This doesn’t surprise me at all. Howard came out and played their championship game against a FBS opponent with a young defense full of players who have never seen formations like that in their lives. And without their best player at safety and a starting corner on the field, got burned for some big plays by a well coached offense with a good quarterback. We put our back up quarterback in and came back and beat them. Howard played with everything they had and left it all on the field. They didn’t have anything left this week. Anyone who plays or played football knows it happens. Kent had our game film and saw every play that worked against us and how to defend against it too. I’m not worried about the Bobcats. Virginia should be worried about the Bobcats.

I love the optimism as usual ... but are you insinuating Ohio didn't have game film on Howard? This is the exact same Howard offense they used last year ... and exactly what everyone was expecting them to run. It was no surprise at all what they did. Ohio just did a terrible job defending it.

Either way ...

Here's an angle? Kent clobbered a not-so-good Howard team that Ohio laid a clunker against ... something Ohio has done repeatedly year after year during the Frank Solich era ... similar to horrific home losses like Texas St, EMU, CMU in certain seasons. But instead of calling a spade a spade ... folks want to build Howard into some sort of respectable program that Ohio was fortunate to defeat ... when in fact they are another lower tier program Ohio played down to either because they were unprepared or took lightly. They were fortunate to sneak out with a win. It was bad. Own it.

Yes ... it's obvious they'll need to be better going forward. Frank said as much. Maybe they'll improve dramatically and beat UVa and/or UC .... or maybe they won't. But either way, the Howard performance was abysmal mainly because of Ohio .... not because Howard is really good.

I agree. This is one characteristic of the Solich era that I cannot understand. Each year we have 1-2 games where the team has obviously been ill prepared. The loss of the East Division title at Kent several years ago stands out. The 40-point loss at BGSU on a weeknight 5-6 years ago. Texas State. This is on the coaching staff. It's as if they decide to take a week off in preparation because they think they can win simply by showing up.

I love the pessimism as usual... I’m not insinuating anything. Howard came out with formations and plays that were not used last year. I counted at least 9 of them. 5 of those beat us for big plays. I didn’t see them use those against Kent St. Like I said , those who have played football know a team can play great one week and terrible the next. It happens. You can lament about how bad we are if you want to, I just don’t agree..

Once again you want to turn this into a "pessimism as usual" debate. It's old.

You're trying to tell me that Howard held back vs Kent (an inferior opponent on paper compared to Ohio) and elected to NOT run plays that worked sooo well vs Ohio? Sorry ... I'm not buying it.

And just out of curiosity ... what plays/ formations did Howard use vs Ohio that they didn't use last year? You studied Howard game tape? You saw all their HBCU games in 2017? Find it hard to believe Howard was so inventive vs Ohio ... but then decided to lay down and play possum vs Kent.

Sorry. Not buying it.

But keep telling us how good Howard is after a 40pt loss to Kent ... who, according to you, had game tape on Howard so they knew how to stop them even though Howard didn't run same successful plays from previous week?

One thing we do agree on ... teams can play bad one week and good the next and vice versa. No doubt.

Okay. Howard sucks and so do we. I shouldn’t argue with someone so knowledgeable about the game of football. Your opinion is now mine as well. This is going to be the worst season ever because we had a bad game against an inferior opponent who laid an egg after playing themselves out against us the previous week. I don’t even think I will watch anymore. What’s the point? We are going to get our butts handed to us. How bad is Kent St going to beat us? 30 points at least? Let me know when it’s over.
hahaha! You are the best. Amazing how you can take one message board statement and turn into an extremist viewpoint.

Please go back and find where I said ANY of that? Where did I infer ANY of that?

You are just looking to pick an argument over some opinions I put out there ... and just because they go against your vision of what Ohio football is and the Howard game in particular, you start attacking.

Even you agreed with my original assessment of the Howard game in a different thread!?!?
What a Saturday in Athens ...

New Sook Center looked great ... really like the patio overlooking endzone. One suggestion, along the rail, add a small shelf to set your food/drink and encourage standing along the rail. Maybe a few more standing patio tables. Overall, it was a huge upgrade!

Jackie O's takes credit cards! This was a nice change ... much appreciated to not have to worry about carrying cash or finding an ATM in the stadium (HINT: They do NOT exist!)

But like the classics ... some things never change:

Still no row numbers painted on the steps so you have NO idea which row is yours ... not a lot of fun when you are trying to find row 38. I will happily buy a can of spray paint so they can add the numbers to the steps

And the product on the field ....

Wouldn't be Bobcat football without QB controversy! Yes ... Rourke was ineffective to say the least early on. But man ... even the most green kool-aid drinking Bobcat has to admit it's kind of disappointing and sad that OUr Maxwell Award, Unitas Award, MAC Player of the Year candidate QB that has his photo on the parking pass and tickets for the home opener gets benched in the 2Q vs HOWARD!!!

On the bright side, Maxwell looked sharp ... much improved from the little we saw last year of him. Sadly, this just means we're mired in another Vick/Sprague QB question going forward.

As much as Rourke looked rusty ... Tim Albin (as usual) didn't do much to help him. The play-calling again was suspect at best. Again ... some things never change!

Speaking of which .... Howard 12-21 on 3rd down. 4 unsportsmanlike/roughing-type penalties and even one on offense!

And ohhhh that secondary! Spinning the classics .... Jaylin Fox, in his fourth year, still has yet to learn how to turn his head. Guys getting toasted regularly by FCS WRs. 439 yards thru the air! To a team that only threw for more that 300 yards twice last year vs. Delaware St and NC Central! And none of it was during garbage time because there was no garbage time!

I know Ohio had some guys out to injury ... so I'm 100% sure that had an affect on things. But man ... this group appears to be a weak link AGAIN.

Papi looked really good ... and that was a positive for sure! But Meyer, Odom and some others had a few drops where Maxwell stuck it right on the number.

I'm hoping Ohio underestimated Howard and came out super-vanilla because they still had two weeks to get ready for UVa & UC. But this was underwhelming to say the least.

I think Frank's quote at the end of Arkley's postgame wrap was dead-on ... "We have to play better or it's going to be a tough year"

Food for thought:

Buffalo 48
Delaware St 10

EMU 51
Monmouth 17

Toledo 66
VMI 3

C'mon ... 38-32 over Howard with a defensive stand in your own territory to seal the game in the final minute!?!?

Auspicious start to say the least ...

Fire away!

Fire away at what? You nailed it.
Why now are you backtracking and picking an argument?

Bottom line. Those were MY thoughts on that game.

Howard is NOT very good. My opinion. I think a 40-point loss to Kent backs that up a bit?

I think Ohio was not very well prepared ... and did not play very good football vs. Howard. Yes, injuries played a factor. But what Howard did was slightly embarrassing considering they didn't even put up close to that kind of offensive output vs. anyone that last few years ... and the fact Ohio is the favorite to win the MAC. Is that what you'd expect from a championship-caliber team?

I think that is a problem we've seen in previous years under this coaching staff ... playing down to the competition. I think Ohio is going to have a fine season ... and god-willing, a championship one. But that game left a lot to be desired in a lot of different areas.

It was a disappointing opener in what should have been a cakewalk. It was anything but that!

But yes ... keep telling me how I hate Ohio football ... I think they're awful ... Kent is going to bury us ... blah, blah, blah.

I'll be happy to keep reading it when I'm on my way to Charlottesville this weekend and Cincinnati next .... because I love wasting my time, effort and money going around watching and supporting a football team that I think sucks and is awful.

You mean like last year when they put 43 points on UNLV as a 45 point underdog? You’re a genius. I didn’t say we played a great game. I said I don’t think we are as bad as you seem to feel we are.

Again ... when did I say Ohio was a bad team? You are inventing things to fit your narrative.

I said they played a bad game against an inferior opponent ... that just lost by 40 to Kent

And yes ... we're all aware they beat UNLV. But that output last year vs. Rebs was far less than what they did to Ohio.

Look at the box scores:

http://www.espn.com/college-football/matchup?gameId=40094...

http://www.espn.com/college-football/matchup?gameId=40102...

Howard

Passing Yards: 484 vs. Ohio .... 140 vs. UNLV
Rushing Yards: 161 vs. Ohio ... 309 vs. UNLV
Total Yards: 645 vs. Ohio .... 449 vs. UNLV
Turnovers: Ohio +4 .... UNLV -2

And maybe biggest difference ...

UNLV was predicted middle of the pack in MWC and finished 5-7
Ohio is picked to win the MAC and win at least 8 games.

Are you trying to say Ohio and 2017 UNLV are even?

It happens, but I don’t think Howard is that bad. We will see how mighty Kent State plays the rest of the season, but them whipping a worn out Howard team doesn’t impress me. You brought up the Kent State game to show how bad Howard is. By that thinking Kent State should beat us right?

Again ... that in no way was me saying Ohio is bad. You inferred that (incorrectly). I simply said Ohio played a really bad game against a far inferior opponent.

No ... I don't think Kent is good. They'll be lucky to win 4 games this year.

No ... I do not think Kent should beat us.

Yes ... losing by 40 to Kent does show me how inferior Howard is.

Yes ... once again, Ohio played down to an inferior opponent. It's a recurring theme of the Solich era.
