With Conard, looks like Cavanaugh moves from RB/ST to just ST. Seems an improvement to have a dedicated ST coach. Still no GM, wonder if we will be back to onfield coach who is also recruiting coordinator. Maybe Cavanaugh or Obly?

Another announcement should be coming. More energy and experience...NFL, college coordinator, staff ties, etc. I'll let them announce when they see fit, but seems like a great pickup.
I assume this will be the WR coach?

Nice catch on that detail. And seeing as how our kicking game pretty much fell of a cliff over the past season I would say that we can definitely call it an improvement to have a dedicated Special Teams coach now.
Alvin Floyd is still listed as RB as well so something was messed up on the roster page. I think we still need OL, WR, S coaches. I expect that in the end Cavanaugh, Floyd, and Mattix will all have a position. I don't think we can add another on field coach. It is hard to see who will be what however given these guys past experience. It is a bit worrisome.
The new OL coach is Coach Johnson. He has coached in the MAC before.

Sure did...

From the official announcement:

Prior to Butler, Johnson returned to his alma mater, Ball State, from 2019-24 as the running game coordinator and offensive line coach. He served as interim head coach of the Ball State Cardinals for the final two games of the 2024 season.

Such a great hire considering that he also knows the MAC well.

Ron Crook new OL coach. Personally, I think this is a great pickup / replacement. He's from WV and has a wealth of coaching experience. Hopefully it'll help with recruiting the area.

Looks like Colin Johnson left for Michigan State as an Assistant offensive line coach. That was fast.

For real. I would have to think that this would be nothing short of a freak occurrence in college football. But, Ron Crook also looks like a winner. He's originally from Parkersburg, West Virginia. Athens is only about 45 minutes away so maybe he also wanted to be closer to his hometown.

Here's some of the information I rounded up for him from the article RufusCat09 provided and the Virginia Tech official site.

- 36 years of coaching experience at the college level

- Virginia Tech (2023 - present): Led the Hokies to rank among the top 23 teams in college football in rushing offense (just under 190 yards per game) in 2023.

- Cincinnati (2017-21): Helped Cincinnati to back-to-back AAC titles, and they became the first Group of Five team to compete in the College Football Playoff, and he led them to rank among the top 25 in rush offense four times, and finish among the top 25 in yards per carry three times

- West Virginia (2013-16): Helped the Mountaineers to three straight bowl games and a ten-win campaign in 2016.

- Coached Virgina Tech in 1 bowl game, Cincinnati in 4 bowl games, West Virgina in 3 bowl games, and Stanford in 2 bowl games.

- Other experience includes coaching Tight Ends/Tackles at Stanford (2011-12), Offensive line at Harvard (2003-10), and Offensive Line as Graduate Assistant at Illinois (2002).

That experience coaching at Stanford and Harvard is quite an interesting highlight.

I think you could've found worse criticisms of Tim Albin on this board during the 2012-2016 period.

If you look at wins the last dozen seasons, I am guessing the Bobcats are near the top with Toledo in the MAC. Just a guess, but Albin and Solich had something to do with that success.

He's updated his X bio, so I will announce. The new WR coach is Danny Langsdorf, who was at Oregon State last year.

https://x.com/coachlangsdorf?s=21&t=K8OvRQ-2LcxxfxeE0_pGww

Has had extensive career coaching WRs, QBs and been an OC. Was at Temple with Chris Woods.

Albin demoted Isphording from OC and gave play-calling duties to Smith and then Smith kept calling plays as head coach even though Isphording was promoted back to OC. Is there a chance that Langdorf is co-OC and is handed the offensive play-calling duties?

We have hired Mattix, Crook, Conrad, and Langsdorf and only lost Smith, Thompson, and Allen. the NCAA has, or at least had, a limit to on field coaches. That's why you had a head coach and then nearly every position coach had a coordinator title or specialist title like passing game or running game or pass rush coordinator. And when moneyed programs have a bunch or extra coached they have titles like "Quality Control" and "Offensive Analyst" and aren't "On field". I have been wondering things like with Mattix specializing more on DLine over his career where we already have a coach then who will be the safeties coach and if there might be more changes. I don't expect to see Izzy let go as long as he has been here and as well as our quarterbacks have done under him but, as I have questioned a few times on the board in the past couple of months, even though I was the first to mention Mattix as a likely candidate for DC, how exactly these hires are going to be reorganized into a staff that fits together right and it seems we have one coach over the limit - if the limit is still the same. I am still a bit concerned there.

I do get the inkling the GM will not be replaced, and recruiting responsibilities will go back to coach as it was.

There is a limit, but it’s not really a limit. Remember when it was 10 FT and 2 GA’s. My times have changed.

If you want to say our "special teams stunk it up last year", I think it is important to qualify that statement that you are specifically referring to our kicking game.

Don't have the time to go through the exact numbers so I asked ChatGPT, and this is the reply I got on our Special Teams performance in 2025. Just as I expected, our kicking game is what came up as the main issue.

Summary: Strengths vs. Weaknesses
1. Kick returns ⭐ Good --- explosive plays, TD by Bangura
2. Punt returns ⭐ Solid --- strong average yardage
3. Punting ⚠️ Mediocre --- low national ranking
4. PATs ⚠️ Below average --- unusual misses
5. Field goals ❌ Weak --- only 58% success

Ohio Bobcats Special Teams (2025) — Evaluation
Overall snapshot

Key team stats from the 2025 season:
1. Kick return average: ~23.4 yards
1. Kick return TD: 1
2. Punt return average: ~13.3 yards
3. Punt average: ~40.6 yards
4. PATs: 42 / 47 (89.4%)
5. Field goals: 7 / 12 (58.3%)
Comments: These numbers point to a unit that was solid in returns but inconsistent in the kicking game.

✅ Bottom line:
Best: return game (especially kick returns)
Worst: field-goal kicking

Overall: roughly average special teams, with returns helping offset shaky kicking.

Here are all the breakdown of the details given by ChatGPT just in case it made any mistakes.

Strong Points:

1. Kickoff return explosiveness
Ohio had some big-play ability in the kick return game.
23.4 yards per kickoff return (solid for FBS)
1 kickoff return TD in 2025
RB Sieh Bangura had a 97-yard kickoff return touchdown against Miami (OH).
Bangura averaged 47 yards per return on his limited attempts, showing real big-play potential.
Impact:
Provided occasional field-position swings
Added another explosive dimension to the offense.

2. Punt return efficiency
Punt returns were quietly productive.
13.3 yards per return overall
That’s a strong average at the college level, suggesting the Bobcats frequently gained useful field position even without scoring touchdowns.
Impact:
Consistently helped the offense start near midfield.

Weak Points:

3. Punting — average to below average
The punting game was not a strength.
~40.5 yards per punt
around 109th nationally in average yards per punt in similar data sets.
This indicates:
limited field-flipping ability
average hang time and distance.
Impact:
Opponents sometimes started drives with decent field position.

4. Extra-point reliability
Even PATs were not perfect:
89.4% (42/47)
Missed extra points are uncommon in FBS, so this was another sign of kicking instability.

5. Field goal kicking
This was the biggest weakness of the unit.
7 / 12 field goals (58.3%)
That’s well below typical FBS averages (usually around 75–80%).
Problems likely included:
replacing previous starters
inconsistency from distance.
Impact:
Reduced reliability in close games
Limited scoring when drives stalled.

Crook is a very good OLine coach. He's coached a bunch of pros and he's good at building groups from the ground up.

I watch as many OU games as I can and you run the football well. Crook will continue that plus he's a very good recruiter in the midwest. Having worked in a bunch of different offenses and some different coaching philosophies, you've got a guy well rounded in pass protection but he specializes in the run game.

You guys did well here.

Wow, what a blast from the past. I remember him on the offensive staff of the Saints back in the early 2000s. Mike McCarthy was the offensive coordinator. For what it's worth, the Saints had pretty a productive offense that was led by an inconsistent QB who never did anything after Langsdorf left. (Of course, the year in question was the Hurricane Katrina year.)

The Saints had one of the NFL's best special teams units during that time under Al Everest, especially with returns and coverage, helping develop a beer truck driver who couldn't hold on the ball into a Pro Bowl level returner and capable part-time deep threat receiver (Michael Lewis). Langsdorf was his assistant. I don't see anything about him helping out Ohio there, but he could.

Ohio Football Names Shaun Cook General Manager
FOLLOW OHIO FOOTBALL: Facebook | Twitter | Instagram

ATHENS, Ohio – Shaun Cook has been named the Ohio football program's general manager, as announced by Head Coach John Hauser on Monday (March 16).

"The general manager's role is central to building and sustaining a program as college football continues to evolve. Shaun's addition represents an important step forward as we position our program to compete and thrive in this new era of college athletics," Hauser said. "Shaun brings valuable experience from some outstanding college football programs, strong relationships within the football community, and a deep understanding of the modern college football structure. We are confident his leadership and vision will be a major asset to our staff, our players, and the future of Ohio University football."

Cook comes to Ohio by way of Texas A&M, where he served as the Aggies' assistant director of player personnel from Dec. 2023 through the 2025 season. There, he contributed to multiple top-ranked high school and transfer portal classes, evaluating and prioritizing both high school and portal prospects.
