This is crazy exciting and I'm not sure I can make sense of it in the NIL world but could be absolutely huge for our program.

Evans, coming in a 6’10” himself, has taken full advantage of his height, averaging 16.1 points per game on a very efficient 62.2% shooting, most of which comes from the interior.

Totally agree....but just happy that this staff is understanding we have to develop a quality big from the HS level and not necessarily rely on portal bigs each season where we got out paid this go-around for targets.
How long do you believe a mid major will hold onto a "quality big man" that they develop from High School? This is not college basketball circa 1990. Yes, they need HS kids, but to think it's a long term answer is probably not realistic in today's game.

That's a mystery too. But it seems getting quality bigs in your locker room is going to be easier for a place like us if they come to us as freshmen.

Given he's still young wouldn't be surprised if he ends up a legit 6'-10" or more.

I read a review on one of the ranking websites that described him as more of ball handling, face up wing, rather than a back to the basket big. I don't mind that in today's game of positionless basketball. It does appear he can block some shots from the short videos I've seen online which is something I like to see from our "5". I'd love to have a big that is a true threat to both pick & pop effectively & roll for a lob.

One thing I noted that was interesting when looking around for info on him... about a year ago he seemed to be a consensus top 100 player in the country but in the last year he's slid around 100 spots in those rankings. Maybe that speaks to why Ohio landed him rather than the SEC programs that were in early. Could be a thousand other reasons too, hopefully he just loves Ohio University, Athens, and the staff!

I think it is still more likely to retain an existing high quality player than it is to secure one in the portal of matching skill.

With P5 programs targeting proven commodities (in the sense of experienced transfers from smaller schools who have already produced in college) the natural next step is less scholarship spots at those programs for talented HS players. Sure, P5's will still target some 4* and 5* players every year but not at the same volume as in the past. More for us!

While losing our best players to NIL transfer is depressing, this is the exact scenario where not *everything* about this new landscape is all bad for Ohio. We just have to take advantage of it which we appear to have here

Very true and I had the same thoughts except that he had the 3 formal offers from the SEC, which suggests he chose us over them. But with the new landscape, that could also mean these type of recruits are more inclined to go mid-major and know you'll play right away to prove yourself and then your options are limitless with the easy transferring. Which is another way of saying we are becoming the AAA of college basketball. Studs who move on to the big club and guys who get sent down after not cutting it in the bigs.

Yes, as of now, we have him. He's verbally committed. That could change but he could also change his mind after he's in Athens. Why not celebrate now? Getting a verbal commitment from a promising player is the best thing the program can do this time of year. Isn't it much better than not getting a verbal commitment?
