Got to see Ethan some in open gym. Really looked like more of a freshman than anyone else. He got overpowered by the bigger guys a lot and even struggled to move laterally to keep up with Reggie and Washington. But on the bright side, he showed that he has a good shot and had a solid amount of muscle on him. I think down the road he could really contribute. But seems like a project player in my mind

Fortunately I don't think we need him to come in and play major minutes this season. Hopefully he just learns a lot from the other bigs, gets his feet wet in some games and continues to improve.

Exactly. I made a trip by the convo the other day, poked my head in and Ethan was out working hard. I think that practicing with Reggie and D this year will do wonders for him. Neither are going to go easy on him, and both will try to exploit his weak spots. Therefore making him work at them and improve. I like this kid down the road.

From what I'm hearing, the kid can run,  Ethan ran like a 5:26 time in the mile run. for a 7 footer, that's pretty impressive if you ask me.

I would have loved to see that!  It had to look extremely awkward.

I'd agree though, that is quite impressive.  5:26 is a very solid mile time for a hoops player, especially a post player who is 7 feet tall.

Im shocked by that. When I saw him, he couldn't even keep up with Reggie out there. By far the slowest player on the court. Maybe he was banged up?

Ok my bad,    Ethan ran a 5:52 mile, but still under 6 minutes, still not bad for a 7 footer,  Ivo Baltic ran a 5:22 mile.

What is that, like 10 steps for him?

So can we still redshirt Jacobs this year?  I know he played a little bit but not sure about the redshirt rules.  You guys think he can add some weight and develop into at least a serviceable big man in the MAC?  With Washington a senior and A. Kellog leaving the program I'm a little worried about our big guys next year.

No, we can't redshirt him. He has played in 8 games now, and he's not hurt so a medical redshirt is out of the question. After seeing him play against EMU, I am again hopeful for his future. I think Groce just wants him to put on some weight and learn our system a little better. He proved he's not a stiff IMO, he can score if he's in the right position, and you can't teach height.

Even in his limited action, he still looks better than John Edwards did at Kent during his Freshman and Sophomore years.

Bigs take time, see KVK.  I'm not sure where all these thoughts that he was going to be serviceable in his first year came from.  I'm just hoping he comes around and starts to show us something in the 1/2 half of next year.

There seems to be a lot to work with in terms of basketball smarts and basic athletic ability. Learning footwork and defensive skills in the paint is where the challenge is now.
