No one else has asked so I will.  Providence site say maybe 5'10.  I know DJ... but...Some of you have seen him play, so please chime in.

I really don't think getting recruits indicates in any way that Groce is more inclined to stay.  Coach is going to do his job as long as he has it, and a big part of that is recruiting.  Do you guys really think he is just going to say "well...I probably won't be here for the class of 2011, so screw it."

Agree, that Coach won't dog it, Andrew.  But that doesn't make it true that he'll go without regard to talent on hand.

Well, maybe.

Dollars, anyone?

For those who have seen Stevie Taylor play...how would you compare his "game" to D.J. Cooper's?

I went to two of Stevie's game this year with the in-laws.  (Mrs. Ozcat graduated from Gahanna, as did her younger brother and her sister will be a sophomore this year)  This kid is electrifying.  I don't think he has the outside shot that DJ has displayed, but from what I saw in two games, he is more dangerous of the dribble, more of a slasher.

Now that he has signed with OU, I will make sure to catch more of their games next season and try to give the board updates.  Very nice get for Groce.  Exciting for sure.

By all recaps and accounts that I've read Taylor seems to be about as close to a mold of Cooper as we would find. Cooper was very inconsistent from deep to start the year but got much better as the year went on and it seems like Taylor will be the same way. Aside from that the fact that he's super quick and approaches double digit assists in all of his games while making his teammates better is the exact same thing we all read about during Cooper's recruitment. We're basically set to have a high level, All MAC PG for the next five years, when was the last time we could say that?

After watching this interview, I'm even more excited to see this kid represent the Green and White. What a well-spoken kid. Another excellent get for Groce and Co.

I'd say that he is pretty much a carbon copy of Coop with a better outside shot. I read somewhere that Stevie was hurt this summer and did not run the point for his summer league team, was moved over to shooting guard and found a lot of consistency there.

Not  singling you out specifically but I'd say that is pretty far from the reality, an oversimplification and tells me that one has not really observed Mr Taylor at length (assuming everyone here has had year and extensive exposure to DJ at this point). Kind of like saying "white men can't Jump" or "all blacks have rythym". Mr Taylor is acutely different in many ways, moreso than he is similar. Flashier and longer than DJ he takes a few more risks in his passes and dribbling. I have not been overly impressed with the outside shooting or shot selection choices of either to this point (there is that similarity) but Taylor is a bit more restrained within the context of the offense. Taylor's penetration in the lane has been improving over the time since I first observed him as an 8th grader inasmuch as he is more likely at this time to keep the ball in his possession. He is in no way presently on track to achieve the TO/Assist ratio that we see in Mr Cooper. Having watched him and Cooper I hope that there is an appreciation of the differences in each and that Mr Taylor is not held to be a clone of DJ.

All that said, I truly like the pick up and see great potential for Mr Taylor to be the next incarnation of all MAC Point Guards that the Groce system needs to run. Well done.

From the official press release:

[quote]Ohio head men's basketball coach John Groce announced a pair of players will be joining the fold in 2011 with the additions of Stevie Taylor (Gahanna, Ohio) and Joe Mitchell (Wichita, Kan.)

"Our immediate concern that we desired to address with our 2011 recruiting class was ball-handling and decision-making at the guard position," Head Coach John Groce said. "Joe and Stevie both provide abilities in both areas that help complement our returning players. Our staff is very excited about adding their talents to our team. We are even more thrilled about their collective passion for the game and their excitement to be a part of what we are building at Ohio University."

Pound for pound, Taylor is one of the most dynamic prospects in the class of 2011. A solid shooter with range, Taylor can be a human fast break with his speed, quickness and ball-handling ability. This summer while playing for All-Ohio Red, he scored 32 points on six three-pointers in a win over the Drew Gooden Soldiers from Oakland that featured Josiah Turner and Nick Johnson (Arizona), Kyle Wiltjer (Kentucky) and Jabari Brown (Oregon)

This past season, Taylor led Gahanna to its first unbeaten regular season, its first district and regional championship and its first state-tournament appearance in the school's history. An Honorable Mention All-Ohio Division I selection, he was also listed as the 44th highest-ranked point guard in the 2011 class.

"Stevie Taylor is a tremendous addition to our basketball program," Groce said. "His enthusiasm for the game is contagious and brings out the best in others. Stevie's quickness and his ability to make good decisions while playing at different speeds will be a great asset for our team. We welcome him and his family to ours." [/OUTER_QUOTE]
