Rivals is reporting that Ohio is recruiting 6-3, 190-pound shooting guard Travis Wilkins from Snow College (Ephraim, UT). He originally signed with Southern Illinois but has asked for his release. Looks like Ohio and Utah is in the mix.

Wilkins is a 22-year-old (served a 2-year Mormon mission) sophomore at Snow College who played in HS in Springfield, MO and would join Ohio as a junior in the Fall. He was named 3rd Team NJCAA All-American this year and was also selected to the Scenic West Athletic Conference All-Conference 1st team.  He was the leagues third highest scorer averaging 17.2 points per game and finished the season scoring 550 total points. Wilkins shot 48% from the field, averaged 1.7 assists and steals per game, led the league in free throw shooting at 84%, was the best three-point shooter connecting on 46% of his shots behind the arc and played almost 30 minutes per game. Wilkins also made the SWAC all-tournament team. Last year for the Badgers he earned all-region and academic all-american honors.

Let's get this guy.....too bad he would only have 2 years of eligibility....love these juco stats:

He was the leagues third highest scorer averaging 17.2 points per game and finished the season scoring 550 total points. Wilkins shot 48% from the field, averaged 1.7 assists and steals per game, led the league in free throw shooting at 84%, was the best three-point shooter connecting on 46% of his shots behind the arc and played almost 30 minutes per game.

I would love to see another strong shooter who understands the game to do the little things correctly.

Cool college name and mascot BTW....the Snow Badgers.  Much cooler than a honey badger.

I always like the option of another shooter, and statwise he's one of the best, but I just don't see where this guy gets a ton of minutes next year. I'm not benching Walt or Nick that's for sure. That said, having a guy who shoots 48% standing behind the line will open up the lane.

Kellogg-.427 from three, then what a drop off.  I think two shooters MIGHT be ok.  Then again, we would be getting back to recruiting 6'5" or less guys.  I'd prefer a big.

I like this add. You can never have too many shooters.

Put him and Nick Kellogg in the corners and let DJ attract two defenders and dish. Recipe for success.

Very excited and pleased about this signee.  A very good first signee for our new coaching staff.

He had received strong interest and offers from some really good basketball programs both coming out of high school and also coming out of junior college.

Snow also plays a pretty competitive juco schedule.

The fact that Southern Illinois, an MVC school, would want him is a good indicator.

Travis, welcome, and we hope you and your wife enjoy your time in Athens.  Pretty good hunting and fishing opportunities here too.

I think he and Green make us a much better team next year with real quality depth.  The next two years we should be very good and jr/sr oriented.  Then, after we've made an even bigger name for ourselves, we can reload!

SIU is terrible, so I wouldn't put much stock in that.

But SIU has NOT been terrible in general over the past 10 years.  They are a program that has sunk recently, but overall it is a good basketball school.  They were trying to rebuild under Lowry so I don't think they would sign kids who couldn't compete in the MVC.

Wilkins could have gone to Missouri State also, another MVC program.

Looks like a "pure shooter" to me.  On almost every play he seems to set up outside for a possible kickout.  I may have missed it, but did he go inside even once?  When he's in the game, though, it should open up opportunities because if he's moving through zone coverage or getting good picks on man coverage, they are going to have to switch which may give him the space for launching shots or open up pick and roll situations.  Pardon my amateur analysis, but I'm excited by this first JC recruit.  I think he'll add a lot to our offense.  I didn't get a good sense of his defensive ability in this clip.

Recruiting mediocre to good "mid-major" players will not sustain this program.

Really?  Most of the current roster is comprised of players who were considered on that level when Groce signed them.

They've been bad for four years running now. I'm not commenting on Wilkins but SIU here; I would like to think our profile is higher than theirs.

What matters is his talent level, how he meshes with our experienced team, and the extent he can contribute. Hopefully he can add depth at shooting guard for next year, then step it up a notch in his senior year when we lose Offutt.  Also Green in his senior year will be a key to maintain continuity.

Although it's certainly best to get 4 year players, for our situation right now, another important piece could be a big time transfer (preferably a big but any solid transfer) who sits out next year, learns the system like Offutt and Smith did, then becomes someone who can step in when we lose are current juniors.

like guys who have played on championship teams, even if it was high school.  best of luck to this young, or maybe not quite so young, man.
