Ohio has offered a scholarship to Vanlue High School power forward Zach Garber. The 6-9, 225-pounder also has offers from Toledo, Kent St., Wright St. and James Madison. He has made unofficial visits to Ohio, Toledo, Kent St., Wright St. and Valparaiso.

Coincidently, I just saw Garber play last night. I think I saw him maybe twice last year also.

He never really struck me as a MAC-level player, but after I thought about it, I can see what schools see in him. He's just a few games into his junior season, so there's room for growth. He's a legit 6-9 with a relatively athletic build. The game I watched last night, I'm pretty sure he did not sub out. He's in shape, but not rail think like sometimes is the case. He doesn't range away from the paint area at all. He relishes his role as a post player. There was one play where he caught an entry pass into the paint, pivoted and threw down a two-hand slam. He had 21 points and 17 rebounds by my count. The negative was a good number of those were off his own misses. He missed quite a few layups, although to be fair, he was putting them up through double teams fairly often.

Vanlue is a tiny school, one of the smallest in the state that plays football. This year's graduating class was 23 students. Of course, Vanlue plays against other small schools, mostly Division IV teams, though a few Division III. Liberty-Benton, where Ohio State's Aaron Craft went, is one of the school's in Vanlue's league. Naturally, his size is uncommon from his opponents. Carey, the school he played last night, had kids about 6-2 trying to guard him. It was an immediate double-team anytime the ball was swung to his size of the court in order to try to prevent him from even catching the ball. The odd thing about Vanlue is it has three other starters that measure 6-5, 6-4 and 6-4. I'm not sure where a school that small finds so many kids so tall. The 6-5 kid really was the best player on the court last night, but those 4 inches sure make a difference at the next level. It's been neat to see Vanlue be successful because it really is about a third as big as some of the largest Division IV schools and many years the teams have been pretty terrible. Without any idea last night that Ohio was interested in him, I was wearing my Ohio sweatshirt, so maybe that will send a subconcious message to him to pick the Bobcats. I'm definitely going to be interested in seeing how he develops no matter where he goes.

He also plays football and is highly regarded in that sport.

This may not mean much at this point, but ESPN gives him two stars and a rating of 85.

Also batted around .350 as a part-time baseball player because he also threw discus and came up one place shy of qualifying for state.

WR/DE/P

I don't think he put up big numers but the team around him wasn't good at all. Vanlue was 1-9. He earned honorable mention honors in his league.

Watched him last night eke out a 1 point win.  He looks legit at 6'9".  He was defended pretty well at times but moves well for a big man.  Both Toledo and Kent State head coaches were in attendance I believe. Saw no Ohio representation.

He is also a fairly intelligent kid from what I understand.

I think he is leaning towards Toledo. He is from a close family that  would probably like to see him stick around NW Ohio.

I hear he wields a mean cue stick and likes to watch the Food Network.
