West Virginia was a state, it was a part of Virginia which was a state. Born and raised there, it separated during the civil was but was part of a state so technically we are all part wrong and part right.
Hmm . . . I was obviously talking about schools that were founded before the state of West Virginia was formed. Obviously, these three schools were founded when those areas were part of the State of Virginia. In fact, in reading further, I discovered that the Virginia Legislature actually chartered "Marshall College," at one point, but at that time it was more an academy than a real college.
I have an hour lecture I can give on the facts involving the creation of the State of West Virginia, but I will spare you details, I will just say that the oft-stated, "We seceded from the seceders," is not correct. The separation was done in a completely legal way. The key to understanding this is to realize the legislature meeting in Wheeling, known as the restored government of the State of Virginia, requested the partition of the state.
