Per Twitter, looks like Bane is down to two schools, TCU or our friends in Miami.

I really thought Saul could have maximized his offensive skill set far better than Cooper... He is no doubt talented and I would have to think he can help Miami. Maybe not the best fit defensively though.

My only question is, does anyone know who was our number one recruiting priority? Culver, Bane, Toles, etc...

You know what, strike that last question. Doesn't matter because nothing will change even knowing the answer.

I thought I read a while back that Culver was our first choice.

Thanks Van. Well, from Arkey's write-up on Culver, I think he said something along the lines of, " It is thought that Culver was at the top of the list for..." Not as clear as I would have liked but again, I'm over it. I trust in Saul Ball.

We'll never know, but I'd be interested to know how this all played out behind the scenes as well.

Did...
1. We like Culver better and hence took him, keeping Bane as the backup option?
2. Did we get turned off, or have no faith come signing day that Bane was holding out and possibly getting another offer he preferred so we just took the guaranteed signing in Bane without fear of waiting only for Culver to look elsewhere?
3. Did SP like re-instating Wadley more than taking Bane as well; did he feel he had no choice team culture wise but to take Wadley back; or once again back to point #2, knew Wadley wanted back but wasn't for sure Bane would even be an option when he had to make the Wadley decision?
4. Was SP afraid to add too many wings all in the same classes and create a log jam with Block, Harley, Bane, Culver and Dartis? Did he prefer to wait a year with Wadley coming off the books after next season and just add someone then after he saw what he really needed after seeing these guys for another year?

Here's something confusing/interesting: Miami seems to have 13 scholarships filled already.

Supposedly the decision date is today. He is still getting offers... NIU just offered yesterday. It was reported he was visiting Purdue yesterday but no report if they offered.

His Twitter account says he's going to announce his decision on Tuesday between Fiami and TCU.

Maybe it's better that Bane doesn't go to Miami. Like some of the posters on the Miami board have posited, based on his desire to seek out interest from schools in "better" conferences, even if he finally did go to Miami, at the first sign of success, he would be back on the market to transfer.

My only real question is why did they keep Cooper for his lame duck season? This seems like a perfect description of sunk cost. That's where a business doesn't change it's direction because in doing so, they would lose the money they have already spent (Last year of contract that they will pay regardless of him staying or leaving) even though it is clear to many that they should make the change. Does anyone really think he will turn it around? I truly don't get it.

BTW, here is a link to a PDF talking about sunk costs in more detail. It happens to be written by two Ohio researchers.

Over/under of the number of years Bane spends at TCU? I'll give him two years, tops.

I think because one of the reasons you fire a coach with a year left is you don't want a lame-duck recruiting year. They reportedly have a really strong class coming in this year that I am guessing would have disappeared if they had fired him. So they will sacrifice the 2017 recruiting class in the hopes they can retain this year's class. If they fire him now they probably lose this class and have to pay two coaches.

That's a really good point. This year's class you refer to has, I think 6 players in it, so they'd be in a situation of having a small number of scholarship players as well. It's hard to say because it's Miami, but I'd really like to see them be at least competitive in the MAC. Competitive in the way they were in the last 6 weeks of the season maybe.

Reason to keep Cooper is $$$$$$$$$$

New Pres coming in July and RED ink in the dept and the AD is watching his ass

AD can fire him next March and still have the hockey team fly to Denver and the new coach will bus to Buffalo and DeKalb

Mac will be tougher next season and 4 or 5 or 6 freshman will not scare anyone when they play on the road or play at home in front of 400 people

Well, I can only speak for myself but... Cooper's last year was trending only slightly upwards. But now, he has to essentially rebuild his team. And, of course he has some good recruits lined up. He can promise them a >>>>>> of playing time... He has had plenty of time to right the ship and now he has to rebuild? No, no and no.

As for the money, they are already on the hook for Cooper's money. Why not change for the better now. At least you won't be throwing away time. And if you are telling me that Miami doesn't have $400,000 to hire a new coach for one of their premier sports, I would say it's an issue of priorities, not resources.

When it comes to the decline of Miami basketball, I think Taiwan BC hits it squarely on the head with this:

"And if you are telling me that Miami doesn't have $400,000 to hire a new coach for one of their premier sports, I would say it's an issue of priorities, not resources."

As for Bane - I'm glad he liked us. He'll be an interesting recruit for Jamie Dixon as he tries to elevate TCU's program.

Miami's decline in all sports (except hockey) can be attributed directly to money spent. They went from one of the MAC's biggest budgets in the early 90s to one of the smallest and the results are out there for all to see. They've turned that around the last couple of years but they've got a big hole to dig out of. They were able to compete in basketball for a while because even though he was near the bottom in salary they had Charlie. But they can't afford a whiff on their next hire.

I hear you on that...but that could easily be said of most kids these days...OTOH I think it is a great choice as it is one of the conferences where his complete lack of defensive knowledge, skill, accumen and habits will not even be noticed.

I think related to that, poor fan support is also causing the decline, which of course contributes to the tighter budgets. Fan support is atrocious and I do not see it improving. It used to at least be non-terrible. I still don't think I have ever met a Miami student/grad that cares at all about their sports, and I meet a lot of them. I am very bearish on Miami athletics and in a weird way I hate to see it.

Thought it would be interesting to bump this up. Forgot about the runaround we had with this kid. Seems to be playing pretty well under Dixon at TCU. Averaging 7pts/game as a freshman. Wonder if his defense has improved though.

Watched TCU yesterday pre game in Kent. Dixon is just what he needed. He is better defensively and is contributing . Richmond fans here in IN are pleased to see him on the tube as tCU has been there often this year. Not sure if we would have got him to where he is currently as Dixon is a hard taskmaster and that is far from his home. He will have a good career far from IN.

Tie game w Kansas

Bane fouled after his 3 ball from the corner is blocked

Frosh steps to the line with 2.5 secs left. 73% FT shooter.

Knocks down all 3 ICE WATER

Time out TCU wins.

Will Ryan looks like a recruiting genius having us in the hunt. Glad he did not choose Fiami "because it was 20 minutes from home"

Didn't see the end of that one, but that's awesome for that kid. Would have been interesting to see him in an Ohio uniform and if Saul and Co. could get him to play some defense like he is at TCU.

I watched that live on TV. I loved the Kansas player, who absolutely pancaked Bane by the way, holding out his hands asking how that was a foul. Priceless.

NIT ship. Started on a Big12 team as a frosh. I am mildly surprised. I said before that Jaime Dixon was the best thing that happened to this player. COngrats. Glad to see our staff looking at some difference makers.
