It would be nice if Ohio was the first to make an official offer!

I agree completely, I hope we offer him!

I have mostly seen him listed as a SG. Only a freshman so he may grow into some other role but it is clear he has some serious talent and obviously some big ties to OHIO.

His HS team was in a game on ESPN earlier this month, anyone watch?

It would be absolutely tremendous if Junior in green could come to fruition...especially if he chooses us over high majors.  It could really rejuvenate a sleeping portion of the fan base.  I know I'll be watching closely.

Agree on all points; it would be great to see him to to Ohio if Ohio is where he wants to go.

But wow this makes me feel old!  What's next, Ohio recruits Danny Nee's grandkids?

ESPN ranks him the #20 player in the class of  '17.  Long, long, long shot.

Are we assuming that these new coaches know about OUr history enough to know the importance of Gary Trent and to know to look out for his son, or is there someone close to the program who knows to enlighten them on such matters?

Aaron Fuss has been a part of the coaching staff since 2008. I'm sure he is aware of Gary Trent.

I would use dad to get a sit down with him and an unofficial visit. See if dad still loves Ohio. Since we have 5 scholarships going into next year, I would also research if any of his teammates/friends are D1 caliber. Try to make Ohio look like a package deal for all of them to continue playing together.

Regardless if we think we can land him, we should offer out of respect for Gary. He put the program back on the map. I think we should try anything possible with in the rules to make Jr. a Bobcat as well.

After being snubbed by OHIO for years, you think Gary will steer his son here over larger schools.

If by snub you mean getting a college degree to get uniform retired, then let him be pissed.  Give me a F______ break.

It goes deeper than that. And his uniform was never retired, simply honored, and that happened before he graduated.

This article says he graduated with a degree in 2010.  Not sure what the hell you are talking about.

I must have missed the "snub" and if there was, in fact, a snub he sure didn't look all that upset about it back in 2012

Gary Trent salutes the crowd at halftime as his jersey was unveiled in the rafters.

It'd be interesting to see what percentage of sons of former D1 players who went D1 went to the same school. I bet the number is miniscule. And it's not easy playing in a shadow that looms that large, although it wouldn't be a crushing burden in Athens the way it can be at a bigger program.

Haha

I am not sure if Rhodes wasn't around if TOS would not have known how big he was to the program. Fans are always going to be more invested and players have very little knowledge of the history. Amazes me to talk to players at UK, Illinois or Kansas who are working camps or present in gyms who know absolutely nothing about their history save for what they saw on TV growing up. Heck, I have talked to IU and TO$U players who had no concept that they had won NCAA titles (what do you think those banners in the gym are son?)

I am not sure GT is harboring a grudge, he seemed genuine and forthcoming in his recent campus visits. Groce did a nice job getting basketball alums back on campus and recognizing them. I hope that goes forth again with Saul here. Having DMac in Athens with Fuss  may be a bridge that keeps that activity going. Unfortunate that Rome, Devo, Tommy, Ivo, DJ Leon and the rest are already gone overseas by then. Program has been better and more grounded in history since distant and older alums have been showing up and are invited not only to games in Athens but JG made an effort to have those guys in areas the team was playing invited to spend the day with the team and speak to them pre game.

I remember seeing a video clip taken around the time of Trent's ceremony and the players had no idea who he was, including Ric Johnson, who had been wearing Trent's #20 for two years. How does that happen? That's what made me question the assumption that our current staff would no to look out for GT2.

The important part is we attack the boy's character when he goes to a big school.

Thanks for the background info, borna.  It's very interesting, especially the part about JG's efforts to reach out to basketball alumni.
