Mentor advanced in the tournament last night with a win over Chardon. They will play Cleveland John Adams at Mentor on Sunday, March 8th. Micah scored 15 points in the win.

Great quote here:

“Our free-throw percentage today was just awful,” Potter added. “Our point guard right now, Andrew Valeri, gets to the hole very easily. We’ve got to get everyone else to do the same thing. Especially up against a zone like they put on us, you’ve got to be able to attack the middle and distribute it out. So, we’ve got to have guards who can get it into the middle and we’ve got to make smart passes as well.”

Sounds like a smart player.

Or he might have been the leader we needed. Harder for a freshman to lead but not impossible.

Mentor lost 76-69 to Warren G. Harding in OT last night, ending their season. Mentor was up by nine with four minutes left to play in regulation and let it slip away. Micah recorded a triple-double with 13 points, 14 rebounds and 10 blocks.

Another player in the game, Derek Culver, who holds offers from Kent State and WVU had 26 points and had 16 rebounds. Might wanna look at that guy too, methinks?

Good luck to the kid. I am sure that Matta has improved his ability to coach big men. I mean, Amir Williams is an all-amer...wait, no he isn't. Greg Oden stayed for 4...wait, no he didn't and he didn't contribute anything to the program. Yep, big man coach Matta will do wonders.

That will be on Boals...or is that Paulus' domain? sometimes that does fall on a 5'10 guard that has never posted anyone you know...

I always found that hilarious. I can remember watching Travis Steele and Pat Kelsey coaching big men at X before the games and getting their post moves down. Those guys are barely 6 foot tall...if that.

Just announced he's transferring from Columbus.

Edit: Guess I should have checked for a new thread first.

Ted, does Ohio have an open scholarship for next year? I was thinking that I'd hate to go into next year with Carter having to play center, as he did as a frosh when TC went down, w/o a big man ready to replace DT. Carter is at his best, as we've seen this year, playing the 4 with DT at center. I'm afraid we're going to miss DT more than we know next year. He was a big factor v. Radford even though he was scoreless until late in the game.

They are at 12 right now for next year, so they have 1 left. However, if Dartis redshirts AND comes back to Ohio they would be at 13. That also assumes no attrition.

If Dartis doesn't come back this year I think he would probably just fold up his hoops career. In terms of attrition, I have a weird feeling already about some of these guys not playing like I did with the guys who've transferred the last few years. I could see Springs, James or McMurray leaving although McMurray seems to be someone who will step in for Doug next year. James looked smooth early in the year but is getting no play. Murrell could also leave with Wight coming in next year and looking like a BVP type guy who would ultimately keep Murrell off the floor. Do most teams have four guys sitting and possibly being redshirted in one year like we do?

Good lord, we're not even out of non-conference play and you're already talking about true freshmen leaving.

Agree with you re: DT's influence in the middle, and how it positively affects Carter's game. DT does a lot of the dirty work on D, and on the glass, allowing the rest of the guys to do what they do best. I don't see anyone currently on the roster able to fill that role right now. Too soon for me to spend time speculating how things will change next year though. Waaaayyyy too many variables in that conversation.

Just looked at the stats for Akron, UB, Toledo, and Ball State. All of them effectively have 9 guys playing the vast majority of minutes. Can't speak to the redshirt thing for other teams, but for Ohio, the only player I see that is potentially redshirted is Springs, but we already knew that was likely. So, I think what you're seeing with Ohio isn't terribly different once we get Jimmy G back in the middle of the rotation.

You do understand that not all Freshmen or Sophomores get to play a bunch of minutes from Day 1 right? They have to earn them, unless they are ultra-talented (DJ Cooper, Gary Trent, Jeremy Fears, Leon Williams) or it fills an immediate need due to unforeseen injuries (Jason Preston is a prime example of this).

This is especially true because the 4 guys you mentioned also have DT, Carter, BVP and Block ahead of them right now. Where are the minutes for them?

Unless you have some hard data to back up those guys leaving, all of us are completely in the dark.

Now, if Saul ends up being let go, that's an entirely different scenario. But that's not what is being laid out yet.
