Sylvester Ogbonda from Georgia Tech:

https://twitter.com/iaresylvester/status/1131263293656580096

6'10" forward, appeared in 10 games last year averaging 1.8 points and 1.7 boards in 6.7 minutes/game. Redshirted as a freshman, and played sporadically in 3 years at Tech, so he would appear to only have one year of eligibility remaining.

Ogbonda was a 3-star, Top 300 recruit nationally coming out of HS
Good find! One year is perfect. Allows Boals & staff to focus on a 3-4 year player for that spot next year.
Love it. I'll take a Power 5 conference.....6-10 transfer any day of the week. Hope he's ready to take it to another level and play 25 minutes per game.

Here's a link to his game by game stats, etc: http://www.espn.com/mens-college-basketball/player/_/id/3...
In reading a few articles, it sounds like Sylvester just got stuck playing behind some really good quality big men. Pastner seemed to really like him. Considering where we were in the process and how late it is, I think Boals gets high marks here for bringing this guy to Athens. Valedictorian of HS class....I like that. Can't wait for this season to get underway. Stunning how well Boals did this recruiting period with what he was facing.

Just wondering, how often does Ohio have 3-6’10” guys? Assuming Springs is that height.

I am 6’8” and I look up at Mr. Springs. Pretty sure he is 6’10”.

My concern with Mr. Springs, or one of my concerns, has nothing to do with height and everything to do with mass.

Ogbonda is listed at 238.....23 years old...game one last year against a D1 opponent for 23 minutes was 9 points and 6 rebounds....one video I saw on the Georgia Tech site was pretty awesome.

The only problem I’ve had with Georgia Tech grads I’ve met is that they make me feel like they can sense my lack of math skills by smell and are silently judging me.

My primary concern is whether or not he can defend, rebound, and/or put the ball through the hoop. If he can do those things, I'm generally unconcerned with his weight. Unless someone in the MAC has the next coming of Isiah Johnson, in which case I'm concerned about his weight.

I agree. Jon Smith was 6-foot-8 and 100 pounds and he was an awesome piece for our NCAA team as a defender and rebounder who was able to take alley oops and sometimes score. I think offensively we will be fine as the guys Boals is bringing in as freshmen all have pretty impressive PPG stats (which doesn't always translate in college but are impressive nonetheless).

Here are a couple of encouraging notes about his defense and rebounding:

After appearing in 23 games during his redshirt freshman season, 6-foot-10 forward Sylvester Ogbonda saw time in just nine games last season as he battled injuries. Expected to be fully healthy entering this season, Ogbonda could be a heavy contributor for the Yellow Jackets.

Through his first 32 career games, Ogbonda has been a quality contributor for the Yellow Jackets and especially so on the defensive end with a career defensive rating of 96.4. Last season, when on the court he didn’t seem to miss a beat defensively and even saw a rise in a few key stats including his block percentage that rose from 5.3% to 15.4%.

.......

Where he is especially good at is on the boards, where he had a rebound percentage of 19.8% when on the court a season ago. But once again it needs to be noted that it was an extremely small sample size. Ogbonda is bigger and more physical than he was two years ago and even last year which should translate well to his ability to rebound this season.

First-team All-Capital Beltway Athletic Association in 2013-14, and was named the league’s defensive player of the year

Imagine year 3 and 4 with Boals. I predict we will be in the MAC Championship game next year with the length we have. This next year should be really good.

We may not be in the title game but I will tell you that every team in the MAC is on notice and has to be a little worried. So many "ifs" involved here but if Jordy comes back we start with three All-MAC Freshman players with Preston and BVP. Then you add highly sought guys like Price, Roderick and McDay to go with Ogbonda from the ACC and we already have more depth than we did the past two seasons. We can go small, we can go long, we can shoot and defend....it will be a fun year win or lose with these guys learning to gel together.

Wish November could get here now. Boals has successfully brought new energy to the program and this board.

I’m not saying we’re gonna win it....but if everyone stays healthy we might be the team that no one wants to play in the MAC tourney.

Wow. My favorite BA rallying cry but usually not thrown out there until January or February. Has to be some sort of record Doc Bobcat just established, "we might be the team that no one wants to play in the MAC tourney" put out there over 5 months before the start of the season.

My bad.

Blame it on the great videos of all OUr new players....got me stoked....plus I’m a big Jeff Boals fan.

This is excellent recruiting by this coaching staff. They get an A from me. Overall, I dont see how they could have done better.
I am really looking forward to seeing and meeting Ogbonda. Looks to certainly fit Boals "high character" metric, and I gotta think he will be a great team player. And the transfer provides opportunity to raise his euro leagues stock if he wants to go next level....which seems to me the only reason to transfer and play if you already have a degree in hand from GT.

Just read about Mballa transferring from Texas Tech to Buffalo. Sounds like a very similar player to Sylvester. Some are thinking we have to sign another big man this summer for next year, but I think Ogbonda could be the "man" that is the final piece this team needs to be good. I give this staff a lot of credit for landing Ogbonda.

The last big that transferred in from Georgia Tech was David Kowalski. The MAC better watch out.

Nice extended interview on Ogbobnda to close out the newcomers to the team. I would post the video but I am not sure how to link it.
