Hey gang, for the third straight year, Jason Arkley was kind enough to join me for podcast preview of the MAC tourney. With the Bobcats already out, we also ventured into some offseason stuff about the state of the program, as well as the grad transfer rule and the developing brouhaha around college basketball.

If you enjoy this one, I hope you'll subscribe on iTunes or Google Play. Going to try to post another with my usual co-host later this week, where we'll likely be getting back to our usual Cleveland-centric shenanigans.

Enjoy!

This interview was particularly interesting to anyone pondering the future of SP. Some of the things Arkley said surprised me. First, he didn't know if SP had been extended, but that begs the question: Has he asked anyone? Second, he seemed to think that most fans are just fine with the direction of the program, accept that the team was injury-riddled and are otherwise looking forward to next season. Arkley seemed to suggest that most fans are not disappointed by four lackluster years.

I like everything about SP except his unacceptable record, so I can imagine that if you covered the team you'd really grow to like the guy, but Arkley seems too eager to give a pass. He ought to be asking Schaus hard questions about the future of the program right now, because one of three things is happening, and they're all news. We're either are paying for a premium for a lame-duck year, finding a way to buy out the final year of the contract (very unlikely) or we're extending the highest paid guy in the league after he compiled a MAC record that's well under .500.

Totally agree he ought to be asking Schaus those questions, because as you say, it's probably the most important news for the program right now that there is to report on.

Another thing I'd be asking Schaus to discuss are his opinions on the selection process now that he's been a part of it for several years. Russ goes through the analysis of how and what they do with Jim, but I'd like to hear his opinions on it, or at least hear that a beat writer asked the questions.

EDIT: Just listened to the podcast. Interesting tidbit not mentioned - the buyout number goes down after May according to Arkley's comments.

The "small" group that's unhappy, according to him is an interesting thing. Clearly there are different groups on here that are extremely to both ends of the opinion on Saul's staff performance. At the end of the day, I'm guessing what matters most to Schaus are butts in the seats, and winning more than losing.

He brought up a good point about Ohio University having a new president as well, which could delay anything about extension of the contract to get out of "lame duck" status.
