What are the chances Texas ditches Shaka Smart? He's barely over .500 overall in his third year, sub .500 in Big 12 play, likely not to make the NCAA tournament in the second straight year, and Texas' name has come up in the recent scandal. How much more time will he be given in Austin?

If that happens, it'll seem that Texas is the place good coaches go to die (professionally). Look at the career of Charlie Strong.

Will be real surprised if Kevin Stallings survives at PITT. Losses have mounted, attendance has tanked.

I can't see how he survives. We were in The Pete on Saturday vs Virginia, on Senior Day against the #1 team in the land, and the place was half full. It's a damn shame because that arena is fantastic. I had the Stallings conversation with a guy sitting next to me. He said it's tough to say because if they fired him at the end of the season, he thought that Pitt is still on the hook for close to $10mil.

Exactly. Strong wasn't given a whole lot of time there, either.

I'll take Shaka on the rebound any day. (Pun intended.)

If Shaka Smart is let go in Austin, I can see him having some potential suitors at the American/Mountain West level at least if he would be interested in such an opportunity.

I think arguments could have been made either way about Rick Barnes being retained at Texas a few years ago but he certainly has led Tennessee to a great year thus far, with a chance to win the SEC regular season title (no worse than a shared title with Auburn) by winning on Saturday.

Stallings will likely be let go after the ACC Tournament-likely on the first day as Pitt likely won't win an opening round game. They had a strong program under Jamie Dixon while in the old Big East but it has not really transferred to the ACC. One could argue that a jump from the old Big East to the ACC wasn't a seismic shift in terms of strength of teams, level of competition etc. Fortunately for Pitt fans I think that program could bounce back in a few season with the right coach in place and be a middle of the pack or better in the ACC. Many years even finishing in the 5-6-7 place range in the ACC can still get you a NCAA bid if your non conference play has merits.

As it stands now, I only see Oats from Buffalo being the only real possibility of a MAC coach being hired away.

Those buyouts can be negotiated. Pitt would be crazy to keep him if there is any way out of it. If he's not the long term solution to rebuilding hoops there (and obviously he is not)... find a way to get rid of him. Offer him season tickets to the Indianapolis minor league baseball team where his son plays. Make it box seats if you have to.

Stallings former player and assistant who is the head coach at Illinois State would be better than to keep Kevin.

BTW... MalwareBytes is still freaking out over something called bannerfarm.ace.com that this site is afflicted with. Anybody else use MalwareBytes and see that?

Barnes only loses one player from this year's team and the guy is not even a starter (but does play quite a bit). His team next year will be the most experienced in all of college basketball. But then ut hoops will be going back down the other side of the rollercoaster. Barnes would be wise to retire after next season as the vols fans treat coaches like crap sometimes even when they have done a good job mostly. Look how many football coaches they have gone through since Fulmer was run off and how many didn't want the job this last time.

There are some other names that have hit the Coaching Carousel recently, but here's an interesting story about the potential end of Tubby's time at Memphis:

Given that we've talked about Stallings at Pitt, here's some interesting info:

"I’m told Kevin Stallings has informed them he will not accept the reduced buyout of about $7.5M that Pitt boosters had hoped he would. He wants $9.4M and it is headed for a showdown — or most likely Pitt paying the whole thing to part with him."

Stallings at Pitt

FOrmer Butler Associate Head Matt Graves out at South Alabama https://247sports.com/Article/Source-South-Alabama-fires-...

This thing is gonna pick up steam. Talking last night about Fox at GA. Guy does it right, runs a clean program and knows Xs and Os. If Ga gets rid of him I think he will be a hot commodity in this storm of FBI investigations. May do him a favor if they cut ties.

Mark Fox...good guy....awful fit at UGA. Never understood that hire from the get go. UGA needed someone with strong recruiting ties to Atlanta. Not sure if he'd fit at Pitt, but at least he's a better coach than Stallings. How Pitt hired Stallings when he was getting fired at Vandy is inexcusable.

Pretty simple how Stallings got hired actually. The AD who hired Stallings got a search firm to look for a new coach. That search was headed by...the guy who hired Stallings at Vanderbilt. The Pitt AD then left 8 months later so the new AD was stuck with him.

I really thought this was going to go to Calbert Cheaney. That is a great hire. After being on Stevens staff at Boston I am anxious to see how it goes.
