Read about this kid in yesterday's NY Times Magazine. Interesting story and a pretty talented kid.

Thanks for posting this. It is great stuff. You can only hope that the dream will continue even though the odds are not great.

Looks like a cross between "White Chocolate" and Jay Burson.

That's how I envisioned Saul Ball.

Yep - the Jay Burson comparison is right on. First time I saw the kid was in the fall of 1973 at Muskingum when he was 7 and I was trying out for Muskingum's team. His ball handling skills at that age were absolutely amazing considering his dad stressed defense over everything else.

There was a game in the Convo where John Glenn played somebody with a great player and Jay and that fellow put on a show. Help me with the teams and the player's name. I want to say Scott Tedder from Whitehall who later dumped 50 on OU when Ohio Wesleyan beat the Bobcats in the late 80's.

Name Scott Tedder's high school teammate at Whitehall who ended up at Duke after a push to get him to Athens by Danny Nee and cc-cat.

That would be Martin Nessley if I'm not mistaken.

And if so and this is the same fellow, this is a sad story.

If Saul wants a one year veteran PG who is a good passer, can break a full court press by himself, plays defense, but doesn't shoot the ball - there is a grad transfer named Larry Austin who is available. He played at Xavier and Vandy and is immediately eligible as a grad transfer.

But he's not a shooter. He's a true PG who can quarterback a team.

We don't need someone who will take grad minutes away from T-Kirk. I see Kirk being a 35 minute a night guy. We just need a reliable guard who can play both guard spots. Austin may want more minutes than we have for him. I think we need more of the athletic 3-4 type of guy as a priority if we are to compete with the Beefalos of the world. We need a Jeremy Harris, which we currently do not have.

A Jeremy Harris type would be perfect.

I think we need an athletic scoring wing and a combo guard that will be able to play good minutes and play a little back up point guard.

Wow - that is him. Tragic. I came across an article a few years back here in the Carolinas - he was getting out of the restaurant business. Had health issues but not to this extreme. gofundme page is over a year old. Notice one name of a Duke teammate pledging. Hopefully he has turned things around.

One wonders what would have happened had he signed with Ohio. Would he have been healthy? Would Nee have stayed - with a 7-footer in the stable? Life takes turns - paths are altered.

You can add Darrington from UT to the mid-south --> MAC migration.

He's headed to Toledo. When is Saul going to get one or two of these power conference transfers? If other MAC schools can get them...

Jaaron Simmons and Kenny Kaminski would both be considered that type of transfer, right?

Also, we're really good at thread drift here - this started out as a neat story about some strong high school kids dedicating their success to others. It has drifted into another thread of 'why can't we get this kid or that kid to transfer to Ohio'.

To yank it back, I'll say that the article was really great long-form journalism about a little-known corner of the world.

Simmons averaged 2 points per game the one year he was at Houston and shot 12% from three. So, that was an exceptional job of seeing the potential he would have after sitting out a year.

But that was 2014. This is 2018. What a coach accomplished on the recruiting trail in 2014 won't help the team much in the upcoming 2018-2019 and 2019-2020 seasons. However... this would be the perfect time to get another Kaminski and another Simmons from that vast list of guys leaving their current school.

I'd love to see them get any transfer who is older, and physically ready to play, whether it's a JUCO, transfer from a bigger conference, or a grad transfer. I agree there.

Here's something to consider though - if we assume this coaching staff is sitting on the last year of the contract, how many of those kinds of players want to come to Athens for more than this upcoming year? I think we all know the answer to that question for most players coming to a school for more than a year. They want to know the staff they're signing with is going to be there. As fans, we can't have it both ways. If we want that caliber of player, to a certain degree, we have to be okay with a contract extension.
