Did anyone read Elton Alexander's piece (of blank) on Buffalo and how they may be the best team the MAC has ever had? In the article he talks profusely about the 2002 Kent team and NEVER refers to Ohio University or even Akron. I don't know where Elton went to school but I figure it's Kent. That 2002 Kent team was great but come on...how can you dismiss any of the OU teams in the 2000s or even our Trent NCAA team? How about Balls?

I don't know why I continue to read Elton Alexander. He has always had a clear-cut bias against OU. It's like when Trump is speaking..I know I will become aggravated listening to him but I can't turn the channel.

Every MAC fan claims Elton has a bias against their school. Elton has written some pretty nice things about our basketball and football programs over the past few years. As to the Trent NCAA team, we lost in the first round, no?

I mean, that Kent team went to the Elite 8, won 30 games and went 17-1 in the MAC. They advanced farther than our Sweet 16 team, had a better record, and didn't finish third in the conference during the regular season. It's not anti-Ohio bias to side with Kent State on this one.

Looking at that article objectively, it seemed like Elton actually went to Buffalo to report on the story, which is cool. But two things about the article bugged me:

1. No where in the article did I read about Buffalo's overall record or any of their OOC efforts.

2. In this section, why wouldn't you name the team that did this and that it took OT with NC to just miss another MAC Elite Eight appearance?

"It's been 20 years since the MAC got two teams in the tournament, and five years since a MAC team advanced to the Sweet 16 or last won a NCAA Tournament game."

Depending on how you measure greatness, the 62 - 63 BG team was loaded with talent.

I think it just shows how sloppy, lazy and careless he is rather than biased.

In addition to the examples others have mentioned on this thread, I'd make a case for the 1989-1990 Ball State team that was the only group to give that insanely good UNLV team a competitive game in that tournament.

I vote for this take....he is sloppy, careless and lazy.

what is that line from Animal House about ignorance/stupidity...?

Balls has won in Maui OOC against some hefty comp and gone deep vs UNLV.

I would say if he think the Bulls are some of the best ever he is just showing how little he knows or acknowledges about the MAC.

Saw that team in person both in Grover Center and in Anderson Arena. They were good, with two future NBA players -- Nate the Great, and Howard Komives. I also won a free haircut with my barber when I bet him that BG would beat Loyola, a real powerhouse at the time and a NCAA Champion in that era.

Thanks for the edit, Alan! ;-)

They not only aren't they best MAC team ever, they aren't even in the conversation. They aren't really that good. Not sure how we got here but the conference has two quality wins all season and Buffalo doesn't have any. Is their marquee win UAB or Canisius?

Got to call you on that one OCF. The Convo wasn't built yet. :)

The talk of the BG team brings back many memories and probably different from most of you. The 4th leading scorer on that team was my high school coach. Elijah Chatman played at Central-Hower here in Akron where I now live. I lived in a small all white Catholic town in western Ohio and he came right from BG to teach and coach. It must have been quite a cultural shock for him. I have many memories both good and bad of him. We talked about him at our 50th class reunion this past summer. Unfortunately he moved on to Dayton Roth and died of a heart attack in his 30's. Just think of the high school team with Gus Johnson, Nate Thurmond and my old coach Elijah Chatman.

You are correct, it was Grover Center. I've came down with a cold in the last few days, and my mind is not operating on all cylinders. I'll go back and correct the original post.

I'm skeptical this is the best team UB's had, let alone the MAC. I would still take the 2005 Bulls over this one. (2005 UB was 76th in Pomeroy, the current version is right now 80.)

If we're talking about great teams from the MAC, we might as well throw in the 1941 team that played (arguably) for the national championship when the NIT was on equal footing with the NCAA. That of course was Ohio.

Now that's a classic - shuttle. Haven't heard that one in years. Played a ton of that and possession back in the day in East Akron. I'll never forget the first time playing 3 on 3 in Grover in 1979 against some local guys and after we scored the first hoop, I went to take the ball out and one of the locals wanted to know what the hell I was doing. I remember saying the "only way you get to take it out is to play some defense." We had one hell of ruckus over that one.

Alexander does some strange reporting sometimes. But, if Buffalo ends the regular season with one MAC loss, and then wins the MAC tourney, that would be the best MAC season I've seen. And, if they win some NCAA tourney games they'll have some legit bragging rights in terms of being among the best MAC teams. No? Of course, like Jack says about Tiger, they still gotta do it.

Elton this week: *Welp, NFL is over... better start writing a few broader MAC Basketball pieces 'cause the tournament is the next big event. {Looks at standings} I didn't even know Buffalo was in the MAC... better make a trip there.*

I like that this board is rallying around common causes like Elton being an idiot.

Parish says it best: "It's just careless. Or ridiculous. Or whatever.

I'll let you pick the adjective.

But surely we can all agree that moving Oklahoma up two spots on an AP ballot after two losses to unranked opponents isn't something that should be done."

I'm running a temperature of 100.6, and feeling lousy. What a low-blow over what was obviously a simple mistake, which I corrected as soon as Alan pointed it. But, cheap shots are you specialty, so nobody is really much surprised.

Well not sure what number of wins means. Did you see the Beefs in the Convo? No way is that team top 5 or even top 10 in MAC history.
