Larry had a bad stroke and is on life support, please keep him and his family and former players in your thoughts.

Great guy. First class.

Any way to find out which hospital he's in? (Asheville maybe?)

Terrible news. I was hoping Coach Hunter could enjoy many years of retirement.

This is awful news. I very much enjoyed Larry as a person and also enjoyed getting to know his mother -- who was a real shark at euchre!

Thoughts to the entire Hunter family.

Such sad news. Coach Hunter was one of my personal favorites, not only as a coach, but as an all around good guy.

My wife heard through our church women's group that Larry is on life support and that the prognosis is not good. He and the family are on the church prayer chain. He needs all the prayer he can get at this time. If you are the praying type, please offer one on the behalf of Coach Larry Hunter!

Perhaps now is good time for my favorite Coach Hunter story. It takes place during the Trent years.

A colleague, Ron, walks into my office. Says that in spare time he serves as a volunteer assistant coach for an area HS team. Each year, Ron says, he treats the entire team and coaching staff to a college game. This year, he relates, the team says they would like to see Gary Trent play. He has booked tickets for an Ohio-Miami game. He asks if there is anything I, an involved alum, can do to make the day more special.

I compose and fax Coach Hunter with Ron's request. A few hours later my office phone rings. "Hi Mike," the voice says, "this is Larry." (We had met one-on-one during my years as president of the Akron-Canton Alumni Chapter; he had participated in some of my pre-game events at Akron and Kent.) "I read your fax. I'd like to help. As you know, game days are busy. This one will be busier because it is a televised game. But here is what I can do."

Coach Hunter says to tell Ron to have his team at a certain Convo entrance at a certain time. A campus security man will have been told to expect Ron's team and will let them in. The team will be invited to sit on the Convo floor or in first row to watch shoot-around.

I report that to Ron who is thrilled.

Lynne and I attend that game which Ohio won. The next Monday Ron appears in my office. He is still pumped. He relates that after the shoot-around Coach Hunter walks over to the assembled team and staff. He discusses the importance of having dreams and following them. He then turns the team over to Geno Ford who leads the team into the dressing room and introduces members to other Ohio players.

Coach Hunter no doubt created lasting, positive memories for those young men.

Very, very sad. The man is too young, and had his retirement to look forward to with his family.

This is a very, very sad day for all Bobcats everywhere. Larry Hunter was a first class person in all ways. As a good friend for many many years, I will always remember him as an intense competitor who would fight you til the end, but was never a jerk before, during, or after. A first class Bobcat that we are all proud to call a friend. May God bless Larry Hunter.

Great story Mike, but Gary Trent never beat Miami at home :(

He was 2-1 AT Miami, and of course the destruction of Miami in the MAC title game.

Anyway, back on thread, serious when I say great story. Very very sad to hear what's happening with Coach.
