There's an Associated Press article that says the NBA has entered into an agreement with MGM to provide "official data" for betting.
MGM will be paying the NBA for the data.
The rationale is that the information will be used to "determine the outcome of various bets".
The agreement also includes cross promotion.

While they are at, why not lift the ban on organized crime figures owning casinos in Vegas as well. I mean Michael Corleone, Moe Green and Hyman Roth (the real mobsters, not the fictitious aliases used in he Godfather.) They made lots of money for their investors, and their certainly weren't many complaints in the complaint box! The same logic (and believe me there are still old timers in Vegas who claim the casinos were better run when the mafia ran them) that believes this fallacy also believes professional sports getting in bed with the gambling industry won't cause any problems either.
