Pretty stunning stuff. 72-33 over the last three years, and winning-est coach in program history.

I saw his statement on my Twitter feed this AM.

Pretty interesting statement from a good character guy

Pretty much cements the reality that mid/low major coaches need to win their conference tournament every 4-5 years or they are fired. Nothing else matters.

After winning 27 games last year you'd think this coach would get a few more years, no?

+1

This coach had done a ton in his time there and gets fired? Yeah this has to be the biggest head-scratcher of the year

That is a really good read - and until (unlikely) the selection process changes, it's reality for the majority of D1 schools.

Seeing that does beg the question: Why on earth did they build a two deck, 7,000 seat arena in the era of shrinking arenas and sports attendance? It seems huge relative to their demand. If I were at a mid-major, even at Ohio, I wouldn't build anything bigger than about 5,000 to 6,000 seats.

They have a name recognition problem too. Mavericks? Who are people in the Dallas area talking about UTA or Mark Cuban's team? And we think we have a problem be confused with tosu.

42,000 student body in a major metro area may require more than 5,000 seats if they’re successful.

Seems at some schools that's a requirement for the position these days.

2016 attendance info for all universities. Top 100 - Ohio is the only MAC school. Sun Belt (UTA's conference) averages around 2,200 a game. Yes these are reported numbers vs. (I'm sure) butts in seats. But all schools have the same condition. So pretty much apples to apples.

Based on butts in seats + 72-33 over three seasons, it would seem it's more than adequate to me.

You’re not on their board of trustees so they must see it differently, so time will tell I guess

Quite true. They also may be looking at 7,000+ seats from more than just a basketball perspective (concerts, etc.)

Thank you for these links. The tweet is telling. "UTA coach Scott Cross was fired because his AD thinks the team should "get to the NCAAs every year." Team's budget is in lower half of its own conference. Maybe get a new AD first? @WBBBPB writes for The Fieldhouse. @TheAthleticCBB "
