Anyone who went, can you offer some insight? Highlights were dunks on guys I am guessing were much smaller than us! Love the starting lineup and having Block come off the bench with BVP. Arkley said Cowart and Preston looked tentative. I hope that once they get going we will really open up what seems like a nice inside game with Carter and Doug. Other than Beefs I can't imagine many teams have more experience combined than Doug, Block, Dartis and when he returns, Gollon. Throw in Carter and Kirk and that's six guys with a lot of playing time.
Honestly, it was pretty hard to gauge. Rio Grande was...well, about what you might expect. Lots of guys got playing time, and it was clear that Saul was playing with rotations. I suspect that we won't learn a whole lot until the Campbell game. Wilberforce is on par with Rio (beat them 86-82 last year).

Don't mind an exhibition, but kind of wish that we'd shoot for games that might provide a greater challenge to a team looking to gel. Marietta gave us a game a couple years ago. Some other regional opponents (John Carroll, Wooster, Wittenberg, West Liberty) have far better programs than Rio.

If Dartis is out till January I have to believe that he will not be the Dartis we saw during his 1st 2 seasons. Maybe next year will be his best year,

The scoreboard worked fine for the women's game. I noticed that some of the player's numbers were reversed (54 instead of 45 for Taylor) in the men's game, and shortly after that the stats were removed from the screen.
It appeared to me that what had happened with the player stats portion of the board was that although the away team logo had been changed from Walsh to Rio, the stats had not been refreshed for either team. So when we saw #54 for example, it wasn't that it was Taylor reversed, it was actually Kendall Jessing's stats from the game before. Not sure if someone forgot and it was too late when they realized, or what. But I remember trying to figure out why the points and fouls columns added up to much larger numbers than 2-0 and 0,0 in the first minute of the game.

Is the athletic dept not announcing attendance figures this season?
They might not want to. Worst Dad's Weekend crowd I've ever seen by a long shot. No 110 floor show either?
Schedule Dad's Weekend in conjunction with a game that counts in the standings, and is against a D1 opponent, and the crowd might be quite a bit better. The University, and it's Athletic Department continues to miss an opportunity when they schedule Dad's weekend with an exhibition game.

Love the new scoreboard and the use of replays today. However, disappointed in no individual players' stats. They have a place for it and even showed full game fictitious stats for players before the start of the game and for the first couple of minutes. But nothing else the rest of the game. Just a guess, but maybe they're lackng the manpower to plug in and update individual stats.
I hope this is something that is resolved. I also think they could stand to turn down the brightness about 15-20%. That thing seemed really bright to me and the crew I was with.

It looks like we had 9K for Dad's Weekend in 2016, also against Rio Grande. Then 11K for Marietta in 2014.

Don't know what yesterday was, but it was pretty disappointing for Dad's Weekend. Probably doesn't bode well for general interest this year.

Should 9 assists on 93 points be worrisome?

I was mostly impressed with the newcomers. They generally look like D1 players. A couple of guys do not (yet), but only one looks like a possible wasted scholarship. I'm not naming names because it's really early and I don't want to call out amateur athletes based on my quick and dirty take of one meaningless game.

They won by about 40, but the D looked bad at times. They gave up a ton of easy hoops on backdoor passes and hacked a lot in the paint. In fairness, the lineups were changing all the time but they need to clean that up.

I left the Convo slightly more hopeful about the season, but I started off pretty pessimistic.

Hopefully that was a result of it being easy for players to create their own shots against an inferior opponent. The team shot 60 percent.

My only small disappointment (besides the news of Dartis/Gollon) was that Murrell didn't get much time. Seeing him and Springs as last guys off the bench makes me think Murrell isn't going to see much time this year. Just watching warmups, and I know it's just warmups, the guy was raining jump shots. Obviously there's more to the game than being able to shoot, but his jumper looked really good against no defense.

I really liked what I saw from Vander Plas. He looked incredibly comfortable, under control, and had a solid offensive game for a guy with limited experience. Then again, I remember Wadley Mompremier having a really good game early a few years ago that got me optimistic, and, well... Kirk looked more physical to me. Carter and Taylor looked like they really hit the gym hard in the last year. I wish Preston would have been a little more aggressive. Cowart looks like a solid pickup.

Overall, I left feeling pretty optimistic about the season. But, I think no Dartis/Gollon in the non conference schedule (if that's what happens) will hurt.

James Thompson IV and Minnie at EMU.
Good call. I forgot these two return for EMU. The Eagles are loaded in terms of individual talent. Would love to see that translate to success on the court, especially against some of the teams they see during the non-conference schedule. MAC basketball would benefit from having EMU return to where they were under Ben Braun.

That jumped out to me as well. Loved seeing Preston with 4 but with our problems with lack of ball movement at times last year I was hoping to see a higher ratio. Very small sample obviously and I wasn't there so can't draw too much of a conclusion from it. Looking forward to watching the game on Wednesday.

The understatement of the century. Season tips off with two best shooters on bench for an extended period of time....not good...not good at all.

Which makes the little playing time for Murrell that much more puzzling. If he's the great shooter he seems to be (shot 48% in high school from 3 and pretty well in limited action at IHCC) then he should be on the floor a lot as someone to provide some spacing.

I'm wondering if his injury he suffered last season (foot surgery in May) at IHCC is still a problem...or maybe the staff just doesn't see enough from him to give him PT.
