On a day when a lot of NFL coaches meet their fate, it looks like UCLA's Steve Alford has coached his final game, which was a 15 point loss to Liberty. Apparently, the loss to the Flames was too much for the AD and the school's influential boosters. ESPN has been airing that 30 for 30 episode on Coach Bob Knight where Alford was obviously mentioned. It is sad when anyone loses their job, but when one gets millions of dollars in a buyout, it certainly is better than what happens to most people who suffer a similar fate. No shortage of candidate for sure to replace Coach Alford. It will be interesting to see if Coach Alford returns to the Midwest, and if he does would he coach in a Power Conference or consider a Mid-Major?

UCLA is the most ridiculous coaching job in the world due to the fact that no one will even come close to touching the legacy of John Wooden, and yet every coach there is compared to him and lives in his shadow. Alford won't be out of work for long, but he should probably focus his efforts on being a Mid-major coach, where he will clearly thrive.

I know there was a thread on here I created that asked when the first TOS thread was going to get created.....good lord.

Then again, UCLA has had serious problems of late.

Maybe but Alford earned this. They've lost six games all by double-digits including home losses to Belmont and Liberty is going to get a lot of coaches fired.

I lived in Los Angeles for 33 years, people in Westwood are delusional when it comes to the current day relevance of UCLA basketball. Los Angeles now has two professional basketball and football teams, and so the relevance of UCLA basketball is sinking as fast as USC Football is. Besides, who can afford to live in Los Angeles anymore with the price of everything, let alone go to school there?

Success would help remove the shadow. Bama football coaches were always compared to Bear Bryant until Nick Saban came along. I haven't heard Bear's name in years.

The description of Jaylen Hands sounds a little familiar.

The idea that they don't charter flights is stunning. I'd imagine that becomes the norm starting with the next coach they hire.

Wow Dinks that article was pretty sobering. Why do the players hate him? Coach Alford hardly looks like the taskmaster type. If the players think he is, they ought to watch the ESPN 30 for 30 on Coach Alford's old coach and get a taste of what he faced. Obviously something had to happen, you can't consistently lose to teams like Liberty by double digits. With the kind of talent the Bruins have, something has to give, the players might want him back if the next coach is anything like Coach Alford old Indiana Coach, Bobby Knight. The whole taking regularly scheduled plane flights was any eye opener. I can't imagine too many bit time programs do that, I bet a lot of mid-majors take chartered flights.

Good article. Read this one this AM. https://theathletic.com/742777/2018/12/31/ucla-had-to-let...

Best line in that first article ". Sophomore point guard Jaylen Hands is supposed to be the leader, but he’s a selfish, shoot-first lead guard that isn’t quite as good as he thinks he is and defends with the same intensity as a rocking chair."
