Well said. Since this is the 50th anniversary of the opening of the Convo, the entire year should be spent celebrating all of the great events that have happened in this building. Aside from the deplorable hand driers in the restrooms that obviously came with the facility in 1968, there is very little to reflect upon the storied history of the building. Lots of sports history there and I can recall when The Convo was a great concert venue as well.

As another aside, is there a reason why we have nothing but holes and patching for the 2 video boards that were removed on the floor? If we can't replace them with other better video options, at least get an Ohio banner or flag or something to cover them up.

Brilliant point. While I'm indifferent regarding hand dryers, as long as they work, I do agree about the 'patchwork' where the old boards were.

The celebration of the arena's 50th Anniversary is a heck of a point. There are a ton of things that could be gone over, including the 50 best games, 50 best players, moments, etc.

50 cent beers.

How about 2 free beers for students and season ticket holders? That's what Loyola Marymount is doing. Press release below.

The ease of getting in and out of the building is an issue with these annoying 'security' people funneling everyone through one entryway.
I'm sure this question has been asked before, but I found myself asking the wife as we funneled in for Campbell... If the security team can spare a person to guard those fenced-off walkways, then why can't that person be performing whatever security check is necessary and then letting us in that way instead of just standing there and projecting an aura of "no, go around?" I'm no expert, but it seems to me that you foster better relations with people when you find ways to say "yes" to them.

What to do about OZone depletion?

If I actually knew the answer I'd get a Nobel Prize.

But I think the suggestion that getting a core group together is probably best. I think only half of the 110 is used at games, so why not recruit some of the rest? The 110 has always been among the loudest and (occasionally) most obnoxious group on campus. Drummers would be best.

I've found the less actual responsibility people with badges have, the worse they are with people.

Police officers in cities are awesome.

State highway patrolmen are terse, but they're pretty great.

Police officers in small towns are good but often confuse Mayberry with NYC.

Security guards become Dwight Schrute tyrants.

The junior rangers who have the glow sticks to help you park at the county fair who guide you straight into the bumper of the car next to you and then yell at you for being one degree sideways are the worst. The only good thing is you can ignore them completely without any consequences. The other people you have to play nice with.

The unfortunate thing about that situation, as I understand it, is that Ohio Athletics has no control over the situation. It's the new gung-ho OUPD thinking they have to protect us from terrorists with that strategy and their M-16's outside the football games. The reality is, those strategies probably aren't making things all that much "safer" while they piss off patrons.

Here's the other thing that's unfortunate: Much like my organization, that sells insurance, at Ohio University, everyone should be 'in sales'. Meaning, the like New Athenian says, everyone should be working together to say yes, and sell a great experience for any event that brings people to campus. This security protocol at The Convo is pretty much the exact opposite of that from my perspective. And the thing that seems dumb to me is that from all reports, it's only used during men's basketball and football. I guess those nights when volleyball or women's hoops draw 1,500 to 2,000 people in aren't significant enough?

Sadly it feels a lot less about actually protecting people and a lot more about ensuring they aren’t held liable. Unfortunately, if someone ones to cause harm it’s not easy to prevent.

I think it has hurt the Ozone because they keep moving them back from the floor. They placed the cheerleaders in front of them first then added the new table. I think the kids feel like that are not needed. They need to be back close to the floor so they feel like they are part of the action.

Yep, until they fire the police chief that can't tell the difference between Athens and Kuwait, it's going to be a bunch of useless, expensive security theater.

Bingo. As a certain top athletics donor put it to me, with Drake's departure Ohio Athletics lost its "secret sauce". Drake's now consulting with schools around the country, and no one in the Convo can sell their way out of a paper bag. The department now finds itself in a major shortfall after years of exceeding revenue goals.

Coincide all this with a university administration that is quietly working to deemphasize athletics (now that McDavis is gone), and you have a recipe for lean years in our future. Unfortunate, but true.

I think many of the issues discussed in this thread are "spot on" and certainly have an impact on student attendance. I believe that another potential impact is the location and plethora of off-campus student housing. Anyone who drives around Athens can see there are many more places for students to live now. A number of those aren't within reasonable walking distance of The Convo and unless said student(s) own a parking pass I can understand why they might opt to stay back at their apartment and watch the game on TV. Reflecting back on my days at OU (yes, I'm old....I attended in the 70s) aside from the individual Palmer area and uptown housing rentals I can only recall a couple off-campus options...College Hill and LakeView Apartments.
Ohio sports definitely need student support and an enthusiastic Ozone missing most certainly impacts the overall atmosphere of the game. There are a number of issues that are currently impacting the game experience at The Convo from appreciation of long-time season ticket holders to student participation to facilities management to overall fan experience. I don't have all of the answers but turning a blind eye to the fact that these problems exist isn't the solution that is needed.

This is something I've been concerned about since the bad defeat vs USF. While asking for Saul's time to end is popular right now (and the last two games make that pretty easy), it's worth considering the idea of what comes after that if they let him go. While I've been a defender of this staff for the last year or so, until they right the ship with some results, there's not much to defend at the moment.

THAT said, it's pretty obvious catfan28 is right in the statement I quoted. If Schaus and his staff, and the OU administration were truly serious about winning and being at the top of the MAC, they would have either extended the contract this summer (not saying at this point that they should have), or fired this staff at the end of the season. The "lame duck" season is a bad way to operate, and not really conducive to winning or improving the program. For that reason, some of my frustration is directed toward Schaus and/or the administration.

And the potential problems I see is past this season, and what comes after. Does the budget decrease for basketball? Does the decision to let a coach run on a "lame duck" season affect future coaching hires? How does it affect recruiting? Bottom line is, the current method of doing business, as noted throughout this thread, needs to be given a really hard look.

OU Country is hitting the nail on the head in this thread. It's also worth noting, for the "Fire Solich" crowd (of which I can admittedly sometimes be a part of) that the next coach there would almost certainly be a very average, MAC-level hire. In fact, it wouldn't shock me to see Burrow promoted and paid among the lowest of any HC in the league.

Make no mistake, the campus administration is not just indifferent - but actually very hostile - to athletics. The new President is the definition of a "maintenance manager" and will be here for only a few years as he heads toward retirement. The individuals really running the show...the "deep state" of OU, if you will...have been on a destroy athletics warpath since the day McDavis left office.

Athletics is now feeling the budget crunch more than just about any other unit. And with ticket sales & donations tanking, there is no way to offset the haircut being provided by bean-counters on campus.

Thanks for that - I just think it's worth asking some of those questions, or considering the different angles besides the immediate "coach has to go" approach that is convenient. Then next 9-10 months are gonna be interesting around this basketball program.

Have to admit, that gave me a good laugh. Unlike Q, I actually have a clue thanks to some well-connected friends.

Whether or not you think there is a "deep state" inside our government is up for debate. But there is no question such an element does exist at Ohio - and they don't care for athletics one bit.

Few understand how much McDavis did to shield athletics from the naysayers. Any on-field/court success in the last decade is pretty much directly the result of his efforts.

How the two Presidents handle budgetary issues and declining revenues definitely seem to be at opposite ends of the spectrum.
