Like many Bobcat fans, I had my first chance to see our newcomers this past Saturday in the Convo, where I was joined by my daughter and her boyfriend, both Ohio University sophomores. My daughter's boyfriend mentioned early in the game that he and his college buddies have taken to calling freshman Jason Preston one of the Ball brothers. I assume because of his hairdo, although I'm not current on the appearances of the Ball brothers.

I'd bet on days, not weeks or months. I keep wishing those kids would publicly tell dad to back off, but we all know they benefit financially from the publicity that he creates for them.

Yeah a kid that got a full scholarship offer to UCLA as a Sophmore 5 Star Rating will get "rocked" in Ohio HS Basketball...maybe he'll be good enough for Saul Ball idk

Keep in mind this is not an OHSAA school. This basically is a sports academy that mostly plays other similar schools throughout the country. It looks like they do play a couple OHSAA schools, including Bay, Brush and St. Ed with a couple other to be determined opponents.

I don't think he is eligible for NCAA but with the G League giving out 6 figure contracts he may go that route he is still a highly ranked NBA Prospect

If he hasn't learned to play defense any better than he could two years ago he's going to be in for a rude awakening when he gets to college. Easy to hide lazy defense in high school. Not so much at a major college. He could put up 25 a game and still be a net negative.

He is NCAA eligible, he was reportedly never compensated in Europe or in the league he participated this summer.

Was saying his style of ball is not conducive to this area. And plus the kid has been playing in tier 3 Lithuania ball and has his old man in his ear.

SPIRE plays in the Flyin’ to the Hoop tourney in Dayton. Will be even more of a circus if LaMelo lasts that long.

That would be a fun tournament to go see although I don't think I'd want to have part of the madness that comes with the Ball family. But the other games would be interesting.

Spire has a kid that is legit 7ft 7in and may not even be 200 pounds. He's trash but is surely a sight to see.

Lamelo played on a national championship public school as a young 9th grader. There are maybe 15 guys at his position for his grade who are at or above his level in the country.

I don't think he's scared of the Bay Rockets.

The director of Spire is tied closely and has been tied closely to the Ball family, so I do not believe you will see any issues.

Definitely a fun event. Though I feel like the quality of teams has dropped significantly but a good under the radar kid is found there every once in a while.....

Looks like LaLumiere is refusing to play SPIRE based on the fact that they have a player that has played previously as a professional

I have long thought Preps should not be classified or be lumped in with High Schools. The interesting question to me is if he is playing prep is he going to the league or college. If he is going to University will they treat him as a pro that has forfeited his eligibility or will the NCAA let him enroll? How does that work for Europeans that have played pro then come over here?

Spire is only lumped in with high schools by those who want them to be. Spire is not a HS and is not sanctioned by the State governing body. There is NO Spire school, Spire has zero accreditation as an academic institution.

Interesting, didn't know that. Didn't we have a recruit that went to Spire at some point?

LaMelo actually looks great in the video that was posted and will be much taller if not already than his brother.

Yes, Caleb McConnell. He and teammate DeVon Baker transferred from Dayton Dunbar to Spire for their senior year. I think McConnell committed to Rutgers and Baker to Siena (who then decommitted and is at UNC-Asheville)..

And that is why the phrase "the forgotten middle child" exists.
